The '78 Brat Took Third AGAIN!
DerFahrer replied to Seahag1978's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I knew it! That's the one that was sitting at the used car joint right in front of my house! I wanted it so bad, but didn't near have the money. That is indeed a beautiful car, I can attest to it myself. -
Looking for some SOA part numbers

I'll try to look these up tomorrow. -

Ready for a New Lesson; Subaru 102
DerFahrer replied to bryanthompson's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Good stuff. Now I can differentiate between some of the GenI pics I've been collecting, by whether they have the indentation down the body or not I was under the impression that ALL Subarus had a wet cylinder sleeve, so I was very surprised when I was reading through my FSM's that my 79 has a dry sleeve. Is that the only time they did that? Aren't all EA81's wet-sleeve? What stage is your 73? Is it a 1300 or 1400? -
What kind of lugnuts/washers do I need? (pug)
DerFahrer replied to Bratwerst's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was under the impression that if you got Pugs, you had to get Pug lugnuts to accompany them. I don't have any Pugs though (yet ), so I don't know for sure. -

There ya go. I just glanced at my parts catalogue really quick, I didn't look at specific designations. That reminds me, the Stage 1 Gen I's are the 1100's and 1300's right (better known as the FF1's)? Making the 1400's and 1600's the Stage 2 Gen I's? I wanna be sure I have that right. -

Those are the beginnings of the VIN number. Yours isn't an A67 coz it's FWD. I'm fairly sure your VIN will start with an A26. I'm guessing your engine is most likely a 1600, or EA71, like mine. -
Awesome! Thanks Machine!

This is the most accurate thing that's been said in this whole thread. NO Subaru is completely immune from a headgasket failure. Yes the 96-99 DOHC 2.5's were especially susceptible to it, but guess what? So were EA82's in the late 80's Subarus. I know of several people who have had blown headgaskets in their EJ22's which has been considered to be Subaru's best engine, and I know of several Phase II 2.5 engines that have blown headgaskets. The fact of the matter is, a Subaru is a machine, just like any other. And some machines have problems that other like machines don't. I personally hate Fords, with a passion. The ones I've had experience with have been complete and total ************piles. But some people have had their Fords for 250k miles with nothing more than routine fluid changes. In closing, yes your Subaru, no matter which kind it is, has the possibility of blowing a headgasket, ESPECIALLY if it overheats for any reason. If that happens, it's up to you whether you want to fix it or pay to have it fixed. But just because it happens to you doesn't mean that Subarus are junk.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't do it! Puleez! You'll regret it if you do!

Ratio of running vs. non-running subarus

Got this fixed, so now I have two Soobies that are officially running and roadworthy! -
Hmmm... sounds interesting. I doubt I'd have my 79 ready for that far of a trip by then, but I could probably bring my Legacy. Hey, at least I'd be going! :-p Would it be just a weekend thing? I could take a Friday off and head up there, spend the whole day Saturday, then come back Sunday. I like the idea, I really do!

Seeing as how my 79 wagon is 4WD, and the 4WD's were kinda marketed as a off-road vehicle of sorts, I tried finding some semi-meaty offroad tires in the original size, and of course, came back empty-handed. Does anyone know of a source for tires like the ones that originally came on the 4WD wagons?

My 'new' 79 wagon (thanks RavenTBK!)
