  1. Okay, finally got around to doing some work on the 79. Since 4 of the 6 intake manifold bolts are broken off in the head , I went about removing the heads. I started with the passenger side. Rockers off, pushrods out, nuts off, air suction system off, plugs out, broke the HG seal, started working the head off the studs. No problems at all so far. The head worked off the studs nice and easy. Presto. I go around to the other side and do the same thing. It took me about 20 minutes to remove everything for the passenger head to come off, and that was including the air suction from both heads and removing the spark plugs from both heads.... ... it's taken me an HOUR just to get the driver's head an inch away from the block! I used a screwdriver, I used wrenches, I used a breaker bar, everything I could get my hands on to pry the head away from the block. Keep in mind, I'm using rags on the ends of these implements so as not to damage the mating surfaces of the head or block. But I've been working at this f'ing thing long enough and I want this head to come off! Is it possible that the studs on this side are bent somehow? Why is this side so difficult when the other side was so easy? Oh, and another problem... I at least have the driver's head off far enough to notice something I didn't really want to see: about an ounce of coolant sitting in the #2 cylinder . I turned my stand to face that side down and let the coolant drain out of it, and from what I see, there isn't any corrosion in the cylinder, it's just wet. Should I just wipe it out and not worry about it? Or am I totally screwed? Sorry for the n00b questions. This is only the second time I've pulled heads off a Subaru engine, and this is the only time I've done it while planning on keeping the shortblock intact. TIA!
  2. Nope. Hatch only. Hear hear hankosolder. I like my cars quirky. I like to hear the window rattle when it's down and I close the door. I like that my car idles a bit funny, and that the engine shakes a bit at idle too. I like the interior that isn't really all that luxurious, but takes a beating well. I like my cars to have personality. These don't. Whatever. I'm done ***************ing. What's done is done. Subaru made their decision and I made mine.
  3. These came in after we left last night. I'll take one of them on a good honest test drive after they've been PDI'ed. But I have a very strong feeling my opinion's not gonna change. If Subaru wants to go a different direction and appeal to a different crowd, that's fine. I can't stop them. But I'm not going with them.

  5. If you don't like the framed windows and right-side exhaust, then what I'm about to tell you guys next is going to kill you... THE PARKING LIGHT SWITCH IS GONE! Yes, that's right, the parking light switch is gone, and if you want to turn your headlights on while your ignition is off and run your battery down, you are free to do so on the 2008 Impreza. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm done. I'm getting my Forester XT Sports and that's it. Subaru, you lost a loyal customer. Permanently.
  6. As far as weight balance goes, the only engines that are inherently balanced are boxer engines and inline-6's. That's why Subaru and Porsche use the boxer engines, and that's why BMW has been using inline-6's for so long (smoothness), and that's why the RB26 in the Skyline is such a great-performing engine. Oh, and rotaries are balanced too, but that doesn't mean they're good engines

  8. It was a concept, but yeah, it's an official Subaru vehicle. I know they made a Pleo Casa Blanca also, and I also think there's a Vivio Casa Blanca, but I'm not sure. Edit: This is the best picture I can find of it:
  9. And the fact that the 257 is a Phase II and the 22T is a Phase I. And the fact that the 257 has MUCH, MUCH better heads than the 22T. And the fact that while fully-closed deck has stronger cylinder walls, it also compromises cooling, while the 257's semi-closed-deck is a nice balance between the two.
  10. The EJ22T is a good motor, but it's not indestructible, or even the best engine Subaru has ever made. Honestly, there isn't anything an EJ22T can do than an EJ257 can't do better. Both the EJ18 and EJ22 are good engines though. There's no denying that. They can still take abuse that would have EA82s and EJ25Ds in a million pieces.
  11. You ordered Hawk pads for an 86 hatch and will get them in a few days... I ordered Hawk pads for my 91 Legacy and they were backordered for 4 months... Anyway, they're good pads, but keep in mind that these are performance pads, which typically means they need to get warmed up a bit before you actually notice their benefit. Plus they will probably squeak, even when they're still good.
  12. ALL 4cyl EJ Subaru engines use 15208AA100. $7.85 list. There's no reason why this filter shouldn't work on the Saabaru.

  14. Geez, that thing looks even BETTER than when I saw it it person. I'd seriously be willing to bet you now have one of the best condition Gen1 Brats in the U.S.

  16. Sorry for not replying to you earlier. XT is in remarkably good shape. 1988, 110k miles, very nice body and paint, BEAUTIFUL interior. There are some issues with it though. Mainly, it needs an alternator and battery. I have some junkyard conventional struts on it in place of the air struts, and they need replacing. It also has an exhaust leak and some oil leaks. Aside from that, the car's great. If you're interested, PM me. I'm both willing to sell the car as-is, or fix it up and sell it (albeit for a higher price)... although subeman90 has already expressed interest, so he's in line in front of you. At least 4 to 5 months, the beginning of winter time. I'm so buried in schoolwork right now I technically shouldn't be online posting this right now. I do have a short break between semesters in August, and I plan on making a lot of headway on it then, but I probably won't get it finished. Do not worry, I will definitely let you know when it's ready, and you're the only one seriously expressing interest in it right now, so you're first in line.

  18. It's not durable at all, especially for mudding/rallying/general abuse. Wear your hat wrong around air suspension, and it will goof up. If you are feeling mischievous, just swap to conventional struts. Then you don't have to worry about it.
  19. An Allison V12 was successfully transplanted into a BMW Isetta. Search Google, and you'll see it mentioned on a few other forums, but no pics. Guy who built it said he will not drive it because he's scared of it. I don't blame him.
  20. BD/BG Legacy in Japan actually came out in 93, two years ahead of us. That car is pimp. If only I had the $$$.
  21. Yes, like he said, ANY non-USDM car that is over 25 years old can be imported and titled in 100% legality in the US. The owner of the NICO forums imported a 65 Silvia, and because of this rule, he did it with no problems.
  22. First off, if it's a 2.5i, I'm 99% sure it doesn't have variable valve timing. I'll double-check, but as best I know, only turbo ones have AVCS. Second, I would personally say that any EJ251 (or 1999 EJ253) is susceptible to the external headgasket leak, and the EJ251 went through 2004. We had a member here, female, I can't remember her username, but she called her 03 Forester "Blu" and it blew headgaskets.
