  1. My opinion: put the cheapest, crappiest 80W90 gear oil you possibly can in a Subie tranny, and don't slam through the gears, it's unnecessary.
  2. Chains are worse IMO. They're not indestructible, they can break, and chains stretch over time. Still need to change them periodically. Plus they're noisier and need lubrication.
  3. No 90-94 Legacies had EGR valves. My Legacy doesn't, neither does my XT. The old carbed Scoobs had EGR systems, I know that...
  4. Clark, yours has been replaced at some point. Any of you who have cars with more than 50k miles have had filters replaced. Your fuel pump would be a worthless piece of shrapnel if you were still using the orig. filter... I've done this 4 times on my Legacy now, had it for 4 years, and I think the best way to go is to get some rags handy coz you're going to spill fuel and lots of it. Unscrew the hose clamps and slide them off the filter nipples, then take the filter out of the bracket with the hoses still on. This way you can grab the filter with one hand and the hoses with the other. Then just pull em off. It will be hard, and you'll make a mess, but the last time I change mine it took me 10 mins tops.
  5. The Forester should hand the FX its rump roast, which would make the choice easy for me. I drive 14- and 17- year old cars around without A/C in FL and have a blast doing it, so anything with more luxury than a Citroen 2CV is good for me, therefore I wouldn't be a good judge of luxury. But go with the Scoob. It'll be more fun
  6. Sweet cars there, the 05 GT wagon looking good, and whose black BE Legacy was that? Awesome-looking! Looks like a fun time...
  7. Checking my EndWrench magazine from Fall 2003, I just found the exact sentence you posted, so I guess the EJ22 was interference starting with the 97 MY. Bummer. Sorry dude
  8. Welcome to the board. How's it in Hawaii? I visited about 6 years ago, and dream of going back again You might hafta deal with an idiot light after the conversion, and you can remove the compressor and air tank to save some weight, but all in all, don't bother trying to fix/replace the air ride, it's not worth it. My XT is having a slight sinking on one side, and when it gets bad, I'm swapping it out too.
  9. Injector problem? I'm experiencing a bit of that, although less pronounced in my XT. I think it's because I ran it dangerously close to Empty one time and maybe sucked some sludge through the system. I've been running Lubro-Moly Jectron FI cleaner, which has helped a bit, and I still need to replace my fuel filter, which I anticipate to help more.
  10. Neither of my cars have working A/C right now, and look at my location
  11. That's a very good question. The Phase I EJ22 is not an interference engine, the Phase II, which became an interference engine, came out in 1999. I don't know what to tell you, that surprises me.
  12. I am about as big a fan of the 1st-gen Legacy/EJ22 engine as there is, and I've never heard this. EA82's are notorious for cracking heads, EJ22's aren't. I personally believe the EJ22 is the toughest engine Subaru ever built. The bottom ends are indestructible, the heads (while behind-the-times) are well-built, they have the least headgasket problems of any Subaru.
  13. That procedure is what I use for OBD I systems. I don't know if it still applies to OBD II stuff. I'm not saying it doesn't, but I'm not saying it does. The pinging could be because of carbon buildup. Subarus are notorious carbon pigs. Search the Net for a product called SeaFoam that has helped for some with carbon, or just give it a good ole Italian tune-up (drive it hard and fast:brow: )
  14. I've heard that before. That engine was tuned a bit differently. DOHC, etc. etc.
  15. WJM, are you talking about the argument me, RenMaxi, and 2pt5RS got into in the SE forum? I used to post in OT all the time, but got tired of being flamed as a n00b even though I've been into Scoobs looong before any of those clowns have. Now I just post in SE and the Legacy and Old-School forums, and I'm even getting tired of SE. Here in Central FL, if you don't have a WRX or STi, you're nobody and I'm growing tired of it.
  16. A die-hard Subaru fan NEEDS to pick that car up! I don't wanna see it go to waste!
  17. You'll definitely wanna check out www.xt6.net for more info on XT/XT6's. Go for it, they're lots of fun
  18. You probably need a new coilpack. I personally am anal-retentive about my car, so I would just get a brand-new coilpack, about $80. Make sure you get a Diamond one, they put out more spark.
  19. There is only one O2 sensor on 90-94 Legacies, screwed right into the cat basically. The best price would probably be www.oxygensensors.com I think they have a universal 3-wire sensor that should fit.
