UPDATE: Group buy on door weatherstrip
DerFahrer replied to RenaissanceMan's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Better make it 75 ft for me, I have a wagon. You said $1 a foot right? I'm on a tight budget here, so I can't do much more than that. -
Damn, just as I was posting. I'm surprised that many people believed it. Bottom is a Honda CRV, not a Suzuki. Personally, I don't get it. I can see the Camry, as Toyota has part of Subaru, and I can see the Mazda3, as everyone thinks the 08 Impreza looks like it, but I don't see the correlation behind the other two. If this proves anything, it's simply that ALL cars are just plain getting uglier.

A GF wagon, whenever I both find the right one AND have the money to buy it Am I considering having a 4-car stable? Absolutely. Am I considering selling one or two cars to help fund this project? Yes, but I don't want to. We'll see. The pic that got me hooked on the GF wagon: I just shuddered. That car looks so hot.

Is that from using the EJ22 headgasket? I'm gonna hafta use the EJ205 headgasket, the EJ18 headgasket would block coolant passages on the head. Is that what you're talking about? Besides, using the EJ18 headgasket would get me around a 7.8:1 CR, which is too low anyway. The EJ205 headgasket would get me 8.3:1 CR, which is perfect. As far as not working, the issue is valve clearance. Putting the EJ18 headgasket on the EJ205 heads, the inner exhaust valves look REALLY close to hitting the cylinder walls. I'm gonna hafta bolt the EJ205 heads onto the block temporarily and turn the cams just to be sure nothing hits. There's also the issue of the valves hitting the pistons because the EJ18 pistons have smaller valve indentations than the EJ205, but I can solve that with custom pistons.

It's been a while since I touched this engine, but some n00b on RS25.com was swearing the EJ18 was semi-closed deck, so I pulled my heads tonight to prove him wrong So, I'm down to a short-block now. Yeah, I'm just moving right along with this project . But, I might be moving along faster soon, because also today, I scored a set of EJ205 heads... FREE! A WRX in the shop broke a timing belt I think and bent its valves, so the heads were pulled and replaced. All I did was ask my service manager, and he said take em! So, once I get some money, I'll get new valves for it and send them off to a machine shop. I'll probably P&P them and do some other stuff too. But first, I need to verify that those heads will work on this block. If time permits, I should be able to do that in the next month or so. Then I'll start looking into Eagle rods, custom pistons, etc.

Hey Emily, there are six EA71 headgaskets in national inventory. FHI has somewhat replenished the supply. I knew this wasn't the end of it. Keep building EA71s

EA71 Connecting rods
DerFahrer replied to newsoobdude's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Part number still comes back good, but no inventory. They would backorder at the least. -
WRC has been off Speed for a while actually. Just go to www.wrc.com or www.rallylive.com to find out what's going on. I recently downgraded my satellite TV service (money getting tight, have to make some sacrifices) and Speed was one of the channels to go. In all honesty, I don't find myself missing it that much.

Should I be looking for a new EA82?
DerFahrer replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Also, make sure it's not your water pump. No kidding, my water pump on my Legacy went out at 118k, and it sounded so much like rod knock it scared me ************less. I had several mediocre mechanics look at it and also agree that's what it was, but a really good mechanic told me it was the water pump. The bearing in the water pump usually squeals when it starts going bad, but every once in a while, they'll come apart and the shaft will start moving around. That's what happened in my case. The vane in the water pump was actually hitting the water pump body when it was shifting. -
We did get the EJ20 here in America in the 02-05 WRX. The EJ205 specifically. His is not an EJ205 though. I believe the EJ20 he's looking at is an EJ204, a high-output nonturbo engine. I believe. Could be wrong about the code. Regardless, with the HP ratings he posted, it's definitely a nonturbo engine.

Wow. Talk about being burned out. Not only did I think keltik was in Europe, I didn't even realize what you people were talking about for a minute or two. I need a vacation. Subarus can most definitely throw rods. Seen it happen plenty o' times. If you decide to keep the Legacy, I still say go with the EJ20.
-
I'd take the EJ20. Torque is fun, but HP is funner! Especially when you don't have it The EJ22 is reliable guys, but there's no reason why the EJ20 wouldn't be just as much so. It's not an inferior engine. Add to that he knows the history of the EJ20 and not the EJ22. And EJ20 parts are probably more available to him than EJ22 parts. EJ20s are common as dirt in Europe, while EJ22 parts are common as dirt here in the US.

The EJ22 had hydraulic lifters up through 96, and only had 130hp/137tq in that itineration. EJ22s 97-up were solid lifter and interference. They were used on the Legacy through 99 and the Impreza through 01. These were 165hp for sure, and I think 165tq. They were used in the 99-04 Impreza, 00-04 Legacy/Outback, and 99-04 Forester. EJ252 is just an EJ251 in a certain car. I think it's more years than just 00, and I think it's just in the L. Not sure on this though. All my sources indicate the EJ253 was never used on a car before 05, and that ALL nonturbo EJ25s from 05-up are EJ253s. It is NOT designed to take turbo boost. Not used in the Forester in 99, but used in the Impreza 2.5RS only in 98. No such thing as an EJ25E... Used in the Forester XT only from 04-up. Edit: Forgot the Baja in 05 and 06. This is pretty much correct. Had 300tq to begin with, but when the SAE ratings changed, the 300hp and 300tq marks came down to 293. The EG33 is just an EJ22 with two extra cylinders. They are NOT closed-deck. Other stuff: All EJ engines became Phase II in 99. All Phase II engines have solid lifters, as best I know, all nonturbo engines are piston-valve interference, and ALL DOHC Subaru engines are valve-valve interference. As best I can tell, the EJ251 was used uniformly from 99-04 in the Impreza line (Impreza and Forester) and from 00-04 in the Legacy line (Legacy and Outback). Due to the external leak issues, the EJ253 came out in 05 and is now used in all Subaru nonturbo cars, minus the EZ30 H6. There have been remote issues with EJ253s, but nothing that seems to determine a mass defect in the engine build. And a disclaimer to all this: ANY Subaru can blow a headgasket. EJ22s have blown headgaskets, EG33s have blown headgaskets, EJ20s have blown headgaskets, etc. etc. Overheat them, or take poor care of the cooling system, and it can happen.

UPDATE: Group buy on door weatherstrip
DerFahrer replied to RenaissanceMan's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Maybe. But you're gonna have to treat me stupid. What do you think each individual's cost would be on all 4 doors (not sure how many feet that would be). -
Key stuck in Ignition 1980 BRAT
DerFahrer replied to danrenfroe2016's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
They're still available??? I'd seriously consider coughing up the dough to get that one then. If the key's stuck in it, then you've seriously got little other choice. You obviously can't trace cut a key that's stuck in the ignition. I dunno if the key you have is the original, but if it's not, there's pretty much no way to get a keycode. I've never seen any GenI or GenII that had a VIN that worked on Subarunet. I'm thinking about getting one myself now if that's not the only one left. Mine's finicky as it is. -

I seriously doubt they're still available.
