  1. Yep, that's what I'll be doing. Tried to get one of the broken intake manifold bolts out. I ground a slit through the middle of it to try and make it like a flathead screw, but when I did, I guess I weakened the two sides of the bolt between where I had cut, so they just broke off when I put some force behind the screwdriver, thus removing all the accessible remnant of the bolt. So I'm just gonna take the heads off and to a machine shop. They could probably use a once-over anyway.
  2. Dumb question: can't I just take the rocker assemblies off to access the head bolts?
  3. Just because there's no wheel play doesn't mean that the bearings aren't bad. I've replaced six noisy wheel bearings (need to replace four more), and NONE of them have had wheel play.
  4. Whoa, hold up. Special socket? Please inform me. I got a feeling I'm gonna hafta pull my heads. Is there an SOA p/n?
  5. Yep, and that number supercedes to 11044AA180. Still 0 inventory, just checked.
  6. Yes. I've personally seen several 90-94 Legacies with VW wheels. Several new Toyotas also have the 5 X 100. The Celica, Corolla, Matrix, and Scion tC all have that pattern. I bought Rota wheels from the Toyota dealership I used to work at, they were for sale for a Corolla. And I've seen a Corolla with WRX wheels (shudder).
  7. Aha! I'm not sure where they came from, but I'm holding the two EA71 headgaskets that I ordered in my hand right now. National inventory still shows zero, so maybe another dealer sent them back. Regardless, if someone needs them, I'd still suggest ordering them anyway. They'll backorder, but I have a feeling FHI still has some more.
  8. Well, Mike's point is that it's unusual for two cylinders on two opposite banks to have low compression. I'd say cracked heads personally.
  9. No, there's a little latch on the harness side. BE CAREFUL with it, because it can break if you're not careful. Don't ask me how I know I've been running with the wire just sitting on the sensor, and so far it hasn't moved...
  10. The station-wagon part doesn't mean anything, believe me. I've seen some beat-to-hell WRX wagons. But you said he carried his kids around in it, so that tells me he's a responsible adult for the most part. Sounds good so far!
  11. It's not bad once you remove the PCV tree. Be careful doing it, as it's probably old and brittle now and can crack easily. I broke mine; thank God for multiple cars! :-\ Once that's removed, you just need a 19mm socket and it screws right out. Keep the new sensor close by, so that when you take the old one out, you can put the new one in quick before you lose too much coolant. Coolant will spill, so have some rags handy. Then just put everything else back together and you're good to go.
  12. Just be sure it was adult-driven and hasn't had the ever-living ************ beat out of it. How does the clutch and transmission feel? Any signs of anything ever being bolted onto it (new exhaust gaskets, intake looks like it was fiddled with, etc.)? Service records?
  13. Good idea! Does anyone know what size the front swaybar is? 16mm? 18mm? 22mm?
  14. 621011332 and 621011333 are no good anymore, I already tried for my own car . Not sure what I'm gonna do about that. Everything else though still comes back good and readily available, yes.
  15. Dude! Awesome find! Those are some of the sexiest Gen1 Soobies I've ever seen. And there are LOTS of non-Sooby cars in there that I lust after. +1 for wishing I could save the pics, or at least make them bigger.
  16. I thought that's what the consensus around here was though, that those numbers referred to the mm diameter of the pistons. So then, what DO 71, 81, 82, etc, mean? They have to mean something.
  17. Other markets got models that were more basic and stripped than the US did, so that doesn't surprise me.
  18. Poo. Oh well, as long as they're good axles, it's worth it. Lifetime warranty or not, it's a pain replacing cheap crappy axles over and over again.
  19. Oops. I thought the 71 and 81 referred to the mm diameter of the pistons?
  20. They have to be different. The bore is different. I just ordered two of them, and I'll report back when I find out what the deal is, whether they're really gone for good or just gonna backorder.
  21. Well, as best I know, ALL engines are assembled in Japan, no matter what market they're going to. But when we throw around these acronyms like JDM, USDM, CDM, etc. the operative words are domestic market. If an engine is destined to be installed in a USDM car, they'll still build the engine in Japan, but they'll build it to US specs. So let's take what you said, your "JDM" engine doesn't have an EGR system on it, and we know that USDM engines do. Well, both the USDM and JDM engines were built in Japan, but they built one with an EGR valve, said "Hey, this one needs to go to the US to be put in a Legacy at the SIA factory in Indiana," and then took the JDM one and said "Hey, this one needs to go into a Forester that we're gonna sell here in Japan. So, a Canadian-spec engine might not have an EGR system, they might have more lax emissions rules up there. But regardless, it was (I think) built in Japan. My point in jumping through all these hoops is that there are a LOT of Subaru engines being sold on eBay, through vendors, what have you, as JDM engines when they're really not. I just hate for people who are new to the scene to get shafted when they buy the engine on the principle that it's JDM and possibly pay more than they have to. Anyway, if you have an EJ25 in front of you and you would feel better tearing it down and replacing the headgaskets, more power to you. If I am indeed wrong about all this and you do truly have a JDM EJ25, then even so, I don't see why you couldn't use USDM headgaskets.
  22. Did you tell him you were from the USMB? The link that Gary posted said, in the very first line, that shipping was free to USMB members. Oh, and you all do know that Subaru's axle reman program has been completely shut down at one point and now only rebuilds axles for certain types of Subarus, right?
