  2. Okay, I guess it's just the 4EAT then that Subaru has good for it in the autotranny department... Remember, I'm still a full-fledged 80's Subaru n00b:banghead:, so I don't know anything about the old Subaru autos...
  3. I have owned 3 cars in my life. My first was a 87 Mazda 626 (not going there:o ), my Legacy is my second, and my XT is my most recent. All 3 of them are manual transmissions. I have a burning hatred for automatics. I don't give a rat's behind if the Subaru AT is better than the MT, I refuse to drive an auto.
  4. Hold on just a second here!!! Do NOT remove the lower drain plug first! There is a simple reason: We all know they're not easy to get out. What were to happen if you removed the lower plug, drained all the oil out, then discovered the upper one would not come out with all your might??? You would be royally screwed, since you now cannot refill your diff. Also, it's better to do that since the air coming in from the upper one will help the oil flow out the bottom one better. As for oil, it's a differential, so I would recommend Redline 75W90 (not NS) in the rear diff. NOT in a manual tranny though!
  5. That I can understand I guess. Since I'm less than two hours from them, it's not a big deal But even the price of shipping cross-country is about equivalent to the difference between the prices the two of us posted.
  6. Geez, $89 an axle! That's waaaaaaaaaay too high!!! I bought my axles from http://www.cvaxles.com at about $55 a piece, for both the Legacy and XT, with lifetime warranty. And I install them myself... I was recommended to them by someone on the BC-BF Legacy forum, and have been very satisfied with not only their product, but their customer service... :cool:
  7. I totally agree. When I used to take my car to have its oil changed, I would watch it being done simply because I cannot go into a waiting room and trust that the job is being done correctly. Even if I wasn't sure exactly how to do it, I would watch anyway, for this very reason. And yes, the techs DO watch their butts when the customer is looking over their shoulder... Of course, now I do my own stuff, cheaper and more reassuring...

Okay I bought a tie-rod removal tool, I guess that's a pickle fork, I dunno, sorry for not being up on terminology Anyway, I hammered the thing all the way into the balljoint, still no luck, after pounding it down towards the ground for about 15 minutes... Ta-Da!!! It came loose, and get this, there was no signs of rust on the balljoint shaft, maybe it's the knuckle. The new balljoint was in in 15 minutes, and I drove the car to work, drives beautifully! Now I just hafta replace the steering bellows, since one is in two pieces and leaking ATF all over the exhuast manifold :madder:, put some new tires on it, and I should be set to go, meaning park the Legacy and give it some much-needed attention :brolleye:

  11. At the Toyota dealer I work at, they have a engine cleaner kit that works in the same way theotherskip described. I was stupid in trying to introduce it to the engine by the brake booster hose :-\ . That won't work because that hose is attached to a single intake runner and that one cylinder will suck the whole thing down. So I got smart and pulled the purge valve hose off the throttle body. It didn't seem to run that much better, so I might not have had much carbon build-up in the first place:D
  12. I am the MASTER at axle pins, BTW. Once I learned how to extract them and also install them on my Legacy, I pulled off two axle changes on it and had no problem with the axle pins on the XT. But I will give this pickle fork thing a try. I'll just buy it if they're $4. I have not taken the control arm off, because 1) I didn't have enough time and 2) I had to move the car out of the way...
  13. Someone like me, who uses their car daily and appreciates speed out of a turn or tearing rump roast through traffic, would love to have a Forester XT over a WRX. Although I'm sure the WRX has very good torque and handles better than the Forester, the displacement and torque advantages catch my attention. Those who have driven both state the obvious: The WRX is a more fun and involving car to drive, but the XT is much more tractable in daily driving...
  14. After the vast learning experience with replacing my right front axle on an 80's Subaru, I pulled the left front off without a hitch... well sorta. The left balljoint is done for, so while I had the knuckle off of it to change the axle, I tried changing the balljoint... It took me 20 minutes of hammering the control arm away from the knuckle to get that raggedy old balljoint out, and then another hour of trying to remove the balljoint from the control arm. After wasting all that time, I decided to get the axle over with, so at least SOMETHING got done... Needless to say, I did not get the balljoint out of the control arm, and I ruined the threads on the bottom of it trying. So my XT is in my garage now with no nut on the left balljoint! I sprayed some WD40 and rust penetrant on it about a half-hour ago, and I'm going to let it sit until Thursday, when I try it again. Anyway, I hate the fact that although the design of the early Subarus makes them pretty easy to work on, their current age takes away all the benefits of the easy design:madder:
  15. Okay, I got it in. I put the axle on the tranny, and then I finally realized that I would have to hammer the hub against the axle to force it into the hub, the same way that I got it out. So I got one axle done today, looks like I'll hafta do the other one some other time. At least I know how it works this time, but isn't that what always happens??:brolleye: I will give you 80's Subaru people credit. They're fine automobiles, but quite difficult to work on. You all that can tear em apart in no time flat must really know your stuff!!
  16. Okay, I let the air out of the shocks, got the balljoint loose, bonked the axle out of the hub, and got the other end off the tranny shaft. Now I can't get the new axle into the hub! That spacer you mentioned, Snowman, seems to be a smaller diameter than the bearing journal on the axle stub. Meaning, that hitting it out isn't that big of a deal, but putting it back in definitely is... I mentioned that the Haynes manual said the axles have to be pressed out of the hub. Well, I've already proved that to be untrue. But is is true that some special thigamajic is necessary to put an axle into the hub?
  17. A computer can be replaced, but Subarus are just as individual as people. Don't let this one go, Brian!
  18. BWAHAHAHAHA!!! That 1 whole psi of boost will almost make up for the extra strain on the alternator due to the drain on the battery!!!
  19. That's right, all lights on the dash should light up in "KOEO" mode. If not, the bulb has probably burned out :cornfuzz:

  21. I knew a guy who had a S14 version 240SX, with the factory KA24 block that he turbo'ed, and BIG TIME!!! He dynoe'd at 500hp I believe? Haven't heard anything from him in a while. Goes to show that those iron-block KA24's have potential too Some lofty plans, eh? Sounds waaay cool. Josh's advice on giving up the EJ20TT is true, the primary turbo would occupy the same space as the LHD brake MC. Some people are buying RHD Legacy postal wagons and doing swaps for this reason, although I haven't seen any completed ones... I agree to get a STi gearbox somewhere. That should ease your mind about sending your stock tranny into orbit...
  22. I have had my Legacy for 3 years now, and even though it has done some peculiar things on the way, it has always gotten me where I need to go. For no reason whatsoever has my Legacy EVER failed to get me home, not even a dead battery or a flat tire. I have gotten unhealthily angry at it before, so much so that I would take it to 7000rpm when the redline is 6500, but even with such abusive driving, the engine still runs flawlessly and has never failed. I have maintained it very meticulously, everything is up to date, except the brakes. The car has never driven more than 4000 miles on the same oil, it has fresh coolant, the air filter is new, as are the plugs, the fuel filter, tranny and diff oil are new, etc etc... So I take partial credit for its fine reliability by maintaining it properly... My XT has not been in my possession for 3 weeks yet, but I'm quickly falling in love with it. It has the familiar growl and torque of a Subaru boxer engine, but the handling and interior design are refreshingly different from the Legacy. It too has performed flawlessly since its purchase... All these fine experiences and the fact that I have ridden in an STi, which was literally a dream come true, should have me pretty much stuck on Subies for life...
  23. No it's not turbo, look in my sig, and my avatar shows a non-hoodscooped XT... But still, I guess I'm one of those people who doesn't have to have gobs of power to enjoy driving a car. Even though it was pouring rain last night, I just put it in 4WD and sped on home. I took the long way home too...
  24. Wow... I bought my XT because 1) it's a good idea to have an extra mode of reliable transportation 2) because I didn't want to see a pristine Subaru fall into unappreciative hands and 3) it's the coolest looking 80's Subaru IMO... But I didn't know they were this much fun to drive!!! No it's not a Vette-killer, but it's still peppy, and the handling is superb! Plus it really feels like a sports car, even though some would argue it's far from it... Then there's the interior... Anyway, I felt like commenting on it, and I'm glad my entrance into the Older Generation is so pleasurable... :bday:
