  1. Are you sure they're not Canadian engines instead? If there is a reliable source out there (read: from Subaru themselves) that says otherwise, I'll shut my yap, and wallow in shame and degradation. But the ONLY JDM EJ25 that I know of is in the current Forester STi. All versions of the nonturbo Legacies, Foresters, and Imprezas that I've ever seen on the Subaru Japanese website, from the introduction of the Legacy back in 1989, use 2.0 engines.
  2. Very, very good to know. They'll likely see my business in the next few months.
  3. Aw hell. Competition is a beeotch Did SOA say the gaskets are now obsolete Emily? Or did you just buy the last set in inventory? FHI might still have some more and they'll just backorder. I'm gonna look into this tomorrow. If I can't get the broken intake manifold bolts out of my EA71, then I'll have to pull the heads and take them to a machine shop, and that means new headgaskets. And, likewise, I don't want to use aftermarket either Crap.
  4. Who's MWE? I'm looking for a new CV axle vendor myself. I'm one who has had troubles with cvaxles.com.
  5. I seriously doubt that this is actually a "JDM" EJ25. Where did you get it from?
  6. As in won't turn over, or won't even crank? If it won't even crank, did you disconnect the clutch safety switch in the process? If so, you need to plug it back in . The signal to the starter runs straight through that switch, so if that switch isn't plugged in, the starter won't get the signal to operate.
  7. Subaru has officially unveiled it at http://www.subaru.com too. I'm still torn on it. I think it looks better than the Edsel-nose car we have right now, but I'm pretty steamed about the window frames and the right-side exhaust on the hatch.
  8. No, I'm telling you that the "JDM" EJ25 on eBay is not actually JDM.
  9. If it's an EA81, p/n is 11121AA030. If it's an EA82, p/n is 11121AA001. EAs have oil pan gaskets, EJs don't. They're the ones that use silicone/RTV. Yeah, you're gonna have to jack the engine way up. Or remove it.
  10. Use the starter trick. Like Gloyale said, you need a 22mm socket, preferably a nice beefy impact one. Put a breaker bar on it, and put a pipe on the breaker bar. Put the assembly on the crank pulley bolt, and turn the crank until the pipe is laying on the ground somewhere solid, as in concrete, towards the driver's side of the engine. Hop in the car, and just pop the starter. No more than a half-second. If your tools are tough enough, this will break the bolt loose. I've done this at least a half-dozen times, and have yet to break off a bolt or damage the engine or starter in any way. The only thing I've broken is tools because they weren't strong enough.
  11. Sounds to me like the caliper is locked up. Do you smell brake pads burning (or even better, see smoke coming from the wheel) while driving? It could be a misadjustment of the parking brake, but most likely, the caliper is seized up and needs replacement. If that's the case, just remove all the bolts like suggested and go to town on it. Beat it off with a hammer if you must. It's no good to you anymore, so get it off with any means necessary. It can be done, I've removed seized calipers before.
  12. I bought the car with a bad starter almost 7 years ago when it had 90k, I'm fairly certain it was the original. I had the starter replaced, and I have no idea where the replacement one came from. Earlier this year, that starter began to act up, so I replaced it with a reman OEM one, and so far so good obviously.
  13. eBay... exactly... To my knowledge, there has never been a JDM EJ22 or EJ25 that's nonturbo. In fact, I'm surprised the Forester has the 2.5 turbo. Every other JDM car still has the 2.0 turbo.
  14. Mine's gonna get a nice purdy paint job too! ... once I get the rust fixed
  15. I have not one, but TWO, of the green 1:43rd-scale FF1s that were on eBay. I bought one myself, and then my girlfriend bought me one too! I didn't know she was gonna buy me one!
  16. The only JDM EJ25 that I know of is the one in the SG Forester STi.
  17. The 06-07 styling never grew on me though. They still look like Edsels to me. Do I think the up-and-coming Impreza is the best looking one ever? Of course not! I do agree that the sedan looks like a Corolla, and the hatch like a Mazda3. And I'm still pretty steamed about the right-side exhaust on the hatch and the framed windows. But they don't have the Edsel nose!
  18. Glad you got it figured out. I'm gonna have a fun time when I pull the dizzy on my 79's engine to change the O-ring, as I've never taken a dizzy out of an engine before. I know, I'm a spoiled brat who's used to fuel injection and coilpacks :-\
  19. My thoughts: Don't like the Outback front end. It's not hideous (a la 06-07 Impreza or Tribeca), but I just prefer the 05-07 front end. It was perfect the way it was. There was an 08 Legacy GT on the truck too that I got a glimpse of, but it went to another dealer. It was too high on the truck to get a good picture of. I'm okay with the Legacy front end a little more, but I still prefer the 05-07. Anyway, here's the pics: Front end: Back end: Next to an 07 spec.B for comparison:
  20. I think Sport Compact Car swapped WRX spring/strut combos straight onto a Forester XT and loved it. Search on their website or backissues if you have them.
  21. This actually belongs in the Historic forum since your car was built before 1980. That's how it works with all boxer engines dude. The halves of the block have to be split to get into the short block. The piston pins are probably varnished with old age, so that's why they're not coming right out. Having never torn down a Subaru engine past the short block, I can't say this will work 100%. But if you can't get the piston pin out, why don't you just take the oil pan off, and take the rod caps off, then get someone to hold the crank while you pull the block halves apart with the rods still attached to the pistons? Then you can just hammer the piston and rod assemblies out of the block halves and use a press to get the pins out? Again, if that's a stupid idea, forgive me. I've got a Subaru engine that I'm just itching to tear down but simply don't have the time.
