  1. Weird. I didn't think 93-94 Imprezas had EGRs, but they do. I just pulled up an EGR valve for a 93 Impreza. I knew the EJ18s never had knock sensors. It's probably gonna be one of my biggest hurdles whenever I get around to my EJ18-T project. And I think the second TPS you're referring to is the IAC valve. No EJ18 ever had an IAC valve mounted to the intake manifold like the EJ22s did.
  2. Right on both accounts. ALL that stuff is now completely contained within the little module on the throttle body. Is it lighter? Of course. Is it more expensive? Actually, no. Yeah, a new drive-by-wire throttle body complete lists for $800, but price out a cruise control system piece by piece and the IAC valve too, and you'll come out more. I have some quips with the drive-by-wire myself. I've driven a couple, and if they're 5-spd, I rev accidentally between gears. I'm used to disengaging the clutch ever so slightly before letting off the gas to be smooth, and for whatever reason, the old cable-style ones don't rev on me but the drive-by-wire ones do. That's honestly about my only issue though. Oh, and I'm fairly sure all Imprezas started using DBW in 05. I definitely know I've seen 02-04 WRXs with cable ones.
  3. Well, just like the 05+ Legacies that they're based on, they have had some issues with the radio/HVAC displays. We had a Tribeca demo here at work that the owner's son was driving that had the whole display go blank. I also have a friend in Gainesville whose mom has an 05 Legacy i that had the display replaced twice, they were almost ready to lemon-law it. As far as mechanical stuff goes though, you should be fine. I haven't seen any blown-up H6's sitting around the shop, and that engine has been out since 01.
  4. I too have seen an 85 GL-10 nonturbo MPFI in a junkyard. FWD, digidash, 5spd. I looked under the hood, said right where it's supposed to: Multi-Point Fuel Injection.
  5. I think it could be the pump. Sounds like the vanes are getting worn out. If you're mechanically inclined, you can rebuild yours instead of replacing it.
  6. By the way, rereading Will's post... when I say "good part number" I mean that one still has the potential to get it. That's just poor semantics on my part. So, three of the part numbers I just looked up are "no good" because they're obsolete. The other ones (besides the one that says 'not valid') are "good" because there is still the smidgen of a chance that they're still available, even if they backorder.
  7. 751323240 - IC Code: 11 - Stand Alone Item Status : Active Zero inventory, but part number is still good. No supercession info on it. Could backorder, could go obsolete. The Following Item(s) Are Not Valid 751322350 751428300 - IC Code: 12 - Obsolete Item Status : Active Obsolete, no longer available, but price will still show up if you plug the number into subaruparts.com or the like. 751428310 - IC Code: 12 - Obsolete Item Status : Active Obsolete, no longer available, but price will still show up if you plug the number into subaruparts.com or the like. 751423040 - IC Code: 22 - Forward Only (Limited Application) Item Status : Active That means it superceded to the part number 751423041 - IC Code: 21 - Forward Only Item Status : Active Same thing. Zero inventory. Could backorder, could go obsolete. 751323050 -IC Code: 22 - Forward Only (Limited Application) Item Status : Active That means it superceded to the part number 751323051 - IC Code: 21 - Forward Only Item Status : Active which, believe it or not, shows 4 left in the country! 752420140 -IC Code: 12 - Obsolete Item Status : Active Obsolete, no longer available, but price will still show up if you plug the number into subaruparts.com or the like.
  8. Have some custom made if money isn't an issue. I know Wiseco will custom make you a set of pistons, I actually have a form of theirs around here somewhere that you can fill out with all the specs that you need and they will make them for you.
  9. Weird. I called SOA on a couple Gen1 part numbers that were still good but showed zero inventory and they told me I would have to place an order for them to find out whether they're actually good or not.
  10. Will, the 25143GA280 part number is still good. Zero inventory, but still good. Try ordering it and see what happens. I'm surprised they told you it wasn't available anymore, because they don't know. The only way to find out for sure is to order it. If it's still available, it will backorder. It might take an extra week, an extra couple weeks, who knows? That's up to FHI. It's fun cleaning out NOS out of SOA's warehouses. I, yes me, I bought the last Gen1 EA71 water pump SOA will ever sell. One was left in the country, I bought it, and rechecked the part number, and it went obsolete! Anyway, try ordering that part number Will. Doesn't hurt to try.
  11. w00t! It's a rare thing to see a newer Subaru owner acknowledge, and appreciate no less, an older Subaru.
  12. Aha! So that's what that was. I wasn't sure, so I didn't touch it. Thanks Paul! Good to know for the future.
  13. You guys have weird autoX setups. I'd get confused running like that. That was good driving though. I like the music synced with it too
  14. Yeah, so how do I drain the heads from underneath? I was expecting to find drain plugs in the block like the newer Soobs (even the EA82s have them), but they're not there. Intake manifold is off. I have the carb intact with all its self-contained vacuum hoses still mounted on the manifold. I'm concerned about the coolant making its way through an open valve and getting into the cylinder and sitting there.
  15. So I just extended my 79's timeframe by quite a bit... ... the four remaining intake manifold bolts all broke off, the ones toward the inside by the coolant passages. I didn't use any, but no amount of PB Blaster would have helped. The bolts started to "turn" quite easily, and then just snapped off. If I feel adventurous tomorrow, I might grind into them a bit and try unscrewing them with a flathead screwdriver. But most likely I'm just gonna pull the heads and take them off to a machine shop. Besides, a slight bit of coolant spilled into the intake ports when I cracked the gasket, so I should probably pull them anyway. Good thing I'm not in a hurry. Subaru, why did you have the coolant pass through the intake manifold before entering the engine? Why???
  16. We pulled it last night. That's definitely a two-person job, and since I had the car up on jackstands, we actually needed a third person. That was a lot crazier than I thought it would be. But anyway, it's out, on an engine stand, and I've already started tearing it down. I didn't know an engine was capable of COMPLETELY covering itself with oil, but this one sure did!
  17. Good point about the flywheel. I forgot about that. I'm gonna heed your guys' advice and try to get someone to help me at least. Think offering the potential assistant a six-pack of beer will be enough incentive? I do actually have access to a cherry-picker, but the car is already in my one-car garage, up on jackstands, and has no transmission or front suspension in it. In order for me to use a cherry-picker, I'd have to disassemble it, carry it in pieces through my laundry room, then reassemble it in front of the car. I've already had to do that once and I'd like not to do it again.
  18. So I've heard from several sources that the old pushrod engines are actually light enough that one person can literally lift them out of the engine bay. After unhooking everything of course. Is this true? Or should I just break down and get a cherry picker? I don't have the best of backs (I did a lot of un-braced lifting back at Toyota and I'm starting to feel it now and know it's going to catch up with me when I get older), and even if I manage to get it out, I don't want to be overwhelmed once it's out and drop it or something. So... can it be done?
  19. Any OHC Subaru engine is going to be difficult to get into a Gen1, even an EA82. The frame rails are too narrow. You'll have to at least do some hammering/cutting. Personally, I say leave it like it is. I like leaving old-school stuff as old-school. Mine is simply a restoration project.
  20. I like both. I love the new-gen Soobies, but most of their owners are douchebags who roll around at 10mph listening to ther six 25" speakers in the trunk. You actually use yours properly Tensen, and for that, I give you props Hey, what muffler does your 79 have on it? The exhaust is exiting on the wrong side
