North Seattle RX Meet: DISCUSS
Subarutex replied to Subarutex's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
SRP = Solar Reflections Performance Its mainly a tint shop in Auburn, that is run by a longtime Subaru guy. Usually throws a kickin' BBQ. All the impreza kids show up to it. Also, SRP is having their BBQ at Branks, and they are closed Sundays. Yeah, weird... a BBQ at a restaurant? Atleast its a BBQ joint. Pretty darn good too, we ate there on Dave's (SRP guy) recomendation after getting my wifes 2.5rs tinted at SRP. So... It won't be on 4/20. -
My EJ20 swap doesn't even look like it has custom lines for it... Did take a little bit of searching though to replace the JDM power steering pump. I have a manual rack in my '86 wagon, that has ej22 and 28" super swampers. Its a workout sometimes around parking lots, but driving is fine. My ej20 swapped RX has power steering. I run 16" rims with 215/45's with little effort to steer. Which is nice bombing around with the newer soob guys, makes it easier to catch up I would reccomend taking the time, and put the power steering in. I think in the end, you will be happier!

Bump it up, check the first post for the official time and update! -
Lookin' Sharp! That thing is going to go pretty good. I was amazed at how much faster my lifted wagon got with the ej22.

4/20 should work for me. Let me double check all schedules, and I'll make a update to the first post. -
Stock Radiator Dimensions Needed
Subarutex replied to 2K4 STI's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On both my EJ swaps I run stock EA82 rads (dual core variety). Both are all metal, and have had the outlets refitted to the larger EJ size. The turbo EJ runs 2 10" fans on the front side. The NA EJ runs one 10" on the front side. -

The answer is too often the same - "EJ it"
Subarutex replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I too get tired of the "EJ It!" message. Even though I am a convert... owning 2 EJ swapped EA cars. Atleast I took the effort of doing what I could with the stock engine, blowing it up countless times, then made the decision to move on. I support people wanting to work with the EA engines, and try to answer any questions I can. Obviously... i'm better at pointing what WON'T work than what will :-P With that in mind... we need to get together and talk shop. Is there any interest in a north seattle RX meet? -

You won't have any issues with the head bolts. I can't recall stock torque specs... I know in my time, I was all over the range. I think I topped out at 75 or 80 ft/lbs. There is also a particular pattern you are supposed to torque... with like 3 steps! Although I hear places that rebuild these w/ warrenty's do it all in one step, just follow the pattern! You'll find out pretty quick if those gaskets are good or bad -
Any more thoughts on this? Since EJ'ing my wagon I've had some weird issues, all come back to fuel starvation/over pressurizing the tank. I'm very close to setting up a surge tank system using the one rguyver linked to. My plans are for the stock ea82 carb pump to be in the stock location. Pump it up one of the top fittings on the 1 gallon tank. Using the factory Y fitting to have the stock tank return hooked up. Then I'll use the aftermarket bosch pump I have to pump out of the 1 gal to the motor. The motor will return to the second fitting on the top.

Looking good! I took WEEKS cleaning up my wiring, and still under the dash it looks a bit crazy. But, out of sight, out of mind! Have you figured out what you are going to do about your fuel system?

Timing Belt Kit...ebay?
Subarutex replied to Major Lazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've used 2 of these kits on EJ motors, and one or two on EA motors. Great product. The Import Experts are a great ebay seller! -
Easy Peasy for EA82 but should work for brat aswell. Megan Coilovers for a 05+ Legacy GT. See pics here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Megan-Coilover-Damper-Kit-Subaru-Legacy-05-06-2005_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247QQcategoryZ33582QQihZ022QQitemZ350026683801QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V Can be found for as low as $850 around the net. Adjustable so you can have it stiff, or floppy, high or low.

Really... overboosting depends on the turbo. And by overboosting, most of us mean, you generate more boost than fuel or timing can keep up with. This leads to detonation, which in turn makes pistons fall apart, and head gaskets to fail. Stock turbo.. i'd say stick to 11psi or so, and do it on premium gas (chevron preferred). If you are running a larger turbo (vf11 or td04) i'd stick to about 8-9psi. These recommendations would be for a car with no additional mods (intake, exhaust, fueling, timing, etc...) Before I went way crazy with my old RX, i was running 13-14psi on the stock turbo (right at the edge of its efficency) with slightly bumped timing, custom downpipe and exhaust, and one step colder NGK spark plugs and 8mm wires. Oh... and intercooler. Thats a VERY important modification. Probally should be your first after doing intake, plugs, and wires. -

Congrats on the RX. Do some searching for my name, for stuff I did to my old RX. Its quite a read. I would say... if it can be done to a RX, i've probably done it! I'm south a bit from you, but hit me up if you want to talk shop. I can show you the right path, and give you a ride in something that will make you stray. Again... Congrats on picking up one of the sexiest cars Subaru made in the 80's Also, I could probally hook you up with a ride/ or check out, one of the fastest EA82T powered cars I've ever been in (even faster than my RX). I showed him how to do it all too... Even better, would be to hook up with NinjaBen (??) I think he has my old RX now, while not nearly as modded as it once was, I can sure point out quite a bit on it. Also, there is a local guy (witchhunterperformance.com i think...) that does injector cleaning and flowing.... -
Cool! Can't wait to see pics of the final piece...

Yeah... my switch panel is about 4 years old. At my shop we have an old school gerber edge... the newer edge fx looks like it can do a bit more for process colors, but its still hard to compete with a digital inkjet print.
-
I have a ej22 swapped '86 GL that was originally carbed. I get some stuttering sometimes, and I've pretty much narrowed it down to a fuel issue. I've been wondering if a surge tank would help, but I'm not sure how to go aobut setting one up either.. like where to put the fuel pumps, etc...

This is my swith panel setup Constructed using dibond w/ brushed aluminum vinyl I edge printed the black design to. Does look sorta out of place, but I've grown used to it. The durability is good too... Vinyl is just now starting to get little problems in it (upper left screw hole its lifting off). You can see in this pic, how 2 hours in the sun caused my sign board to warp. Its the one sitting on the rack in the picture. That board is 6mm PVC, I thought it would warp less... I guess I was wrong! Ultimately though, its kind of a neat effect.
