RX has me on my last nerve... (UPDATE)

Stock Coil. Will be NGK's... so what should I go for? .039? or bigger .043? -

Last night I checked for vac leaks again, and retimed it. Gave it another 3 degrees, so its at 23 degrees now. Seems a bit better. New plugs should go in the next time I have some spare time (this weekend) what should I gap them at? -

The injectors turned out great. Unfortunately, I had a set other than the ones in the car cleaned... So i don't know if any of the old ones were leaky or bad. But the new ones are clean, and flow all within 1 cc of eachother, thats pretty darn good! I have thought about tuning the SAFC to try and correct the problem... but it doesn't seem like it is a too much/or too little fuel problem... could be though... -

Ok, new update. Cleaned and flowed injectors in (240cc @ 43.5 psi). Fuel pressure adjusted back up to 35-36psi. Tweaking the SAFC, I was able to get it to idle at 800rpm. However, it was only the sub 1000rpm field I altered. Idling and offboost driving is acceptable. However, boost starts to come on at 50-60% throttle about 2500rpm. This bogs and chokes the motor. My narrowband says its 12.3-11.1 rich. However, if I feather the throttle and keep it out of boost till 3500rpm or 4000rpm it will really pick up (well as good as 5psi goes). Little narrowband shows 13's. I'm going to re-time it tonight. Probally going for 22-24 degrees. Ideas? Thoughts? -

I plan to attack the sensors with a meter, see if anything is skewed. I'm debating getting the injectors cleaned/flowed. There is a place that will do all 4 for $60 or so. www.witchhunter.com My regulator is a rising rate (just like the stock) at 1:1. I would not be foolish and run one of these 4:1 or 7:1 regulators. I'm not sure whats up with the pressure either, I'll try upping it again. However, I had it at 36psi prior to having the tech look at it, and he lowered it cause he thought it was running to rich (lots of unburnt gas coming out the back) Perhaps this indicates an injector problem? The TPS might be the problem with the falling rpms with constant throttle... but i've already gone through that system once with a meter when I converted to a spider intake. I also realized that i have cheesy autolites still in it, I have a set of NGK's ready to go in, just forgot that I hadn't done it yet. That is a good idea to check the MAF voltage after the SAFC... Even though the SAFC doesn't have anything programmed in it, and it should just be passing the signal through, you never know. How would you go about testing that? It seems unplugging anything would make the car not run... -

One more thing... Car spent 10 days at a local Subaru Tech's house, he changed the following: Vaccuum hose routing, and fuel pressure and ign timing. He also diagnosed that it was my oil pump causing problems. Not pumping up the lifters and not allowing the valves to open all the way. So I replaced the oil pump, and still similar results... however I only have about an hour of run time on the motor since, and It hasn't been driven at all. I'm afraid to drive it (i've lost too many motors!) -
8 months and counting... car still runs like poo. Engine is a fresh rebuild with fresh pistons and rings. Copper head gaskets torqued to infinity, delta cams (mild grind) and tdo4 turbo, custom fuel system, wrx intercooler with stock bov to atmosphere. Cam timing is as on as its going to get, ignition is timed at 22 degrees. Fuel pressure is set at 20psi. Car usually starts, but really won't idle. Will hold 2000rpms steady all day long though. Trying to get it to idle on its own, it will occasionally backfire into the intake. Gas is new 92 octane (shell). If you try and hold it at 3000rpm it will suddenly fall out, and drop to factory idle even though you haven't changed throttle position. I just replaced the coolant thermo sensor as it was throwing a cell, now that is all clear. I haven't begun tweaking the SAFC, as I'm still unhappy with the performance without it. What could be wrong? Injectors? Plugs? Sensors? I really need to get this car running good so I can get it out of here.

Could have been Subafly...

So, today I was browsing my works wonderful broadband connection (after our last slow "hiccup" I got Verizon out here to fix it... we are now running 3x our fastest since we got DSL a year ago) I was looking for a good picture of the Brat targa stripe, as I'd like to reproduce my own since my Brat has been repainted. I stumbled across what I presume is a Japanese site, but I could be wrong. Here are the pictures: I really love this rollbar. I was told that you couldn't have both seats and a roll bar, yet this seems to make it work. Does anybody know where I could find somethig like this?? Also... where is the torsion bar adjustment? I think mine is cranked up, and I'd like to lower it a bit.

First time... 3 - 8 hour days (but it was the first I'd ever worked on a car). Subafly and I lifted his ea82 wagon in about one full day.

I believe Primitive Racing also makes a skid plate for EJ cars. It would be a bit meaner than that Rallitek one, as its intended for rally.
-
No idea... Haven't talked to her since New Years. Although Harry and Mom came in to the store last week and bought some signs. Mom invited me over steak!

I would post to say that you can get some nice skidplates for the EJ cars, and they are only like $150 or so. Perhaps Rallitek carries them. http://www.rallitek.com/products.asp?ID=741&PP=Y&HB=&ACC=&SP= However, since you haven't asked and seem to have an overly sarcastic tone about you, i'll just let you be. Have fun.

Kenny, that is the CLEANEST EJ install i've seen yet. I can't wait to get a ride... or maybe get to drive it. Just for all you other people, Kenny wasn't into Subaru's till after he met me through an old girl friend he had. I like to brag that i'm the one that converted him

I run 28" SSR TSL's on my 14" Peugeot rims. Rims are 14x6 I believe. Bias Ply flexes better, but with as much street driving I do, I decided a radial would be better suited for me. Which has turned out good. I try to air down a little bit, but not a lot, when on the trail. I've lost one tire to a puncture, hit a sharp rock and got a jagged tear about the size of my thumb in it. (this is why I air down now, I was running at like 36psi)

I've seen the PRE rally rx, its setup nice. Although, the driver/owner isn't the nicest guy. Was very unwilling to talk to me. I did get out of him that he had ARP head studs. And for the record, I haven't ever gotten anything from them, nor would I. Not unless they were a little friendlier. I spose I just got a really bad impression... I'm sure if you had a WRX though they would be more than willing to talk to you!

RX approaching 'ultimate' status....
Subarutex replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Currently I am having a certified subaru tech go through the RX to help me get it running in top shape. Sadly, once it reaches this point, it will going to a new home. If I was to keep it, I would definately investigate the costs of an EJ swap. I have been swaying to the dark side, and sadly, its winning me over. Power, ease of parts availability, etc... Next Sept. I will be getting married. I may searching for new employment, and if I work really hard might think about moving into a house. I can't afford this many toys at this point. I really can't afford any tickets, nor the insurance hikes they cause. I recently picked up a 1983 Brat for free, that I have put together and got running good. It gets 28-30 MPG on the stock hitachi and is nice driver. I don't have an impreza, nor can I see myself being able to get into one in the near future. Currently in my stable: '83 Brat (driver), '86 Wagon (too pretty to drive), and '87 RX (for sale) I am only 23. I have plenty of time when I'm older to start collecting cars again. -

I assure you Jay, if I was one that had Ultimate... It would be running, and you would definately hear all about. You guys would hear so much about it, you'd be sick of me. When it was for sale, I tried hard to get it. But.. he who has the money gets the toys. I can't even afford to build a proper ea82t :-/
