And the engine is a-coming out...um, again
Subarutex replied to Dennis ex24's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good plan Dennis. As you may know, i'm rebuilding the engine in my RX. Going with stock bottom end, copper head gaskets, gen2 heads... gen3 if I can find some, and 260 cams from Delta. -
I have some Delta cams sitting at my local shop, Bow Wow autoparts. I believe it was like $75 a cam... so $150 total. Very decent prices. For the EA82T they seemed to have to different grinds. One pretty radical, requires modification of something to get it to work. The other not so radical. I'll post the specs on my cam after I pick it up.

Looking sharp Noah. -
The difference in RX and XT6 clutches.
Subarutex replied to gravelRX's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have an xt6 flywheel and xt6 clutch and pressure plate in my RX. I've only slipped it once (not on purpose) and that was on an extremely hard launch (like redline clutch dump) on dry pavement. -

well... on a muscle car its usually a wump wump wump wump wump sound I don't know, its hard to explain entirely. -
Gas? Fuel? What is it? *EA82T Performance Thread*
Subarutex replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
actually, i'm pretty sure the stock is a rising rate. We just need to get more pressure out of it. -
Cars of today (atleast performance minded cars) don't have the mass of fuel tubes running around that we do in our EA82T engines. The have fuel rails. Solid pieces of metal (aluminium I'd think mostly) with the centers bored out. To which the injectors attach to. Now, as I've said, to get more fuel from these injectors, we must raise the fuel pressure. After purchasing a second hand SX Performance rising rate fuel pressure regulator I began to investigate how to plumb it into the system. I did think of a way, but honestly, that would just make more of a mess. Mess isn't simple, or necasarly effecient. So, here is my grand thought: Remove all of the manifold mounted fuel lines. Then make up a some fuel rails. See attached for how they could be made. Then, the whole system can be plumbed to the FPR via some nice stainless braided hose. I think it will both clean up the engine bay (appearance wise) and allow for more effecient, higher pressure fuel, to be delivered to our injectors. Your thoughts?

I thought about finally letting this thread die. But, I just can't do it. Here is one more bump. May good things come of this. Oh, one more thing! YYYYYYAAAAARRRRRRRR me Mateys!!!!!!!!! hehehe Post whore++

SOunds very good. I had the pleasure of getting a ride in it on Sat. Its pretty darn quick for a brat. Any car that has a cam lope at idle is A.O.K. in my book. -

Nice find! I love somethingawful.com. If you are on teh forums, have you checked out AI? On a side note... remember this is a "family" forum. I think this post is great and dandy, but others will disagree. I am surprised that the word porn isn't starred out like this: **** And further more, I am of the impression as of late, that this thread will either be edited by this time tomorrow (not by you) or will cease to exist. Good luck. Glad I saw it in the raw form! Truely a hideous but novel car. -
Gas? Fuel? What is it? *EA82T Performance Thread*
Subarutex replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As i understand it... the uppipe flange on the legacy turbo is the same as the stock turbo. Its the downpipe flange that changes to the WRX style. Its not a matter of making a flange, its a matter of spending $30 on the NASIOC and buying a wrx uppipe. Then you cut the flange off, grind the plate smooth and weld it to the top of the existing uppipe flange. Thats how I imagine it could be done. Once this is done, you could run a td04 (stock wrx), one of the many VF options... like VF22, 30, 34, etc... The issue is tunablility now. Recently, it has been found you can modify a stock WRX injector to flow 740cc's. A very simple mod that all you need is a dremel. I just spent the better part of my evening seeing if this will work on our injectors. Sad to say, it won't. Our injectors work by moving a needle back and forth. To open and close this little hole. I cannot forsee how hard it would be to widen this hole (but then it wouldn't be closed all the way, and fuel effeciency would be out the window) or to widen the hole and make the needle better. Some people say there are other injectors that will work, but I am not certian which ones. I'm fairly positive that the main bearings in the engine will give out, before the limits of these injectors are taxed. To get more fuel, take out the factory fuel pressure regulator, and get a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. I think a 1:1 one will work just dandy. -

There is no point trying to push the stock turbo passed 14psi. Actually, i want to say 13.8psi. Thats where the stock turbo stops being effecient. After that point, yes it will be pushing more pressure, but the actual volume of air will be less. Spend the money, go out and by yourself a stock legacy turbo and a WRX downpipe and exhaust. Bolt it on to the stock crossover, the put the WRX stuff from the turbo back. -
You get what you pay for. I had no problems shelling out $1300 for my RX.

Tach jumpy all of a sudden...
Subarutex replied to gmcfan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would guess coil, or dirty contacts on the disty. Take the cap off, and clean the points. -
Its smaller than mine... although I do have a weber. Also, i kept the stock y-pipe... after that its opened up to 2.5" to a FlowPro muffler. Sounds pretty healthy. Atleast it drowns out the tick of the hydrolic lifters!

Dyno Day, serious numbers, real proof, real pictures.
Subarutex replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That was a good read. Its good to finally see some real numbers. Sort of dissapointed at the numbers (as Im sure you were at first) but that just brings me back down to a level head... So i'll know what to expect. I agree with pretty much everything you stated. My car is setup the following way: WRC IC w/bpv 13psi of boost Spider Intake Custom cold air intake Apexi SAFC Exhaust is in the process of being done. You say the fuel system was running rich. Did they put you on a wideband O2? My A/f guage says I'm running just barely richer than stoic under WOT. Good job guys. Thanks for taking this financial plunge for all of us. Hopefully my time will come soon. -
Gosh... i want to say 12ft on the amp wire, but I could be wrong. Its been awhile since i've done mine. On all my subaru's any wire i have needed to get from the engine to the passenger compartment I have gone through the same place. On the drivers side of the car... up by the hood hinge is a large rubber grommet thing that has some wires run through it. I usually just undo one edge of the grommet and run it in through there. This drops down right above the pedals. So take off the 2 pieces of dash below the wheel. And you can reach the wire then.

Noah, I had a similar thing happen to my rear diff in the RX. Not sure if they are the same or not in anyway. In the rear diff, there are bolts that go down the center of the stub axle. On both sides, the bolt had broken. Requires a special socket to take out. Zap has one, he could tell you I think what part # it is from Snap-On. Maybe those bolts need to be replaced. Good luck.

John... I too have been following the Megasquirt project. What are your thoughts on it applying to our engines? I seem to recall seeing someones sig a while ago that said they had a Megasquirt on an EA81T...

How does the fuel cut work?
Subarutex replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, I am well aware of what a lean condition can do. Thats why I have an A/F gauge. -
Hmm... I never knew that our cars had a rev limiter. I'd like to know some more information on how you have the fuel set up. Maybe a picture or 2?
