Question: Is that an '04 WRX scoop on it? -
Hope you get that MBC flipped around, then try adjusting. My first spring i couldn't get lower than about 20psi. It was too stiff. GOod luck. Skip - Over boost control = fuel cut? IF so, yes, I get it very badly. I'm running a very efficient intake (similar to the wittepro), 12psi boost, and the spider. On the freeway, if i'm on it more than 5-6 seconds, i hit fuel cut. The severity of the fuel cut depends on temperature i think. Sometimes its a lot more violent than others. Now, I've hit fuel cut with as low at 5psi of boost. GOing up the pass, probally an instance of temp, and whole bunch of air being forced through. I do experience my car running out of breath on occasion. Usually only in 3rd or 4th gear. I think its more a gearing issue than the turbo. Come march, you're jaws will all be on the floor, stay tuned.

hmmm, ok I'm contemplating building a Megasquirt fuel injection computer, and I'm wondering if I need to keep the stock ecu. Looks I would have to. Wish there was a simple way to isolate the system... any ideas?

::cough:: GO COUGS!!! ::cough:: I'm proud to have attended and been kicked out... best year and half of my life :-p

Ok guys, I need a complete rundown of all the functions of what the stock ECU does in my '87.5 RX. Fuel injection.. Fairly obvious it does, what else?
-
5th gear accelerate on freeway for 20 seconds. Gauranteed to hit fuel cut. Skip... are we sure we need a 5vref? Can't we just use the ref signal that is already going to that, even if it is less voltage? :: I know nothing about electronics :: PS, mines almost done... hows about yours?

Easiest way to tow my wagon?
Subarutex replied to syphon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Jay, call Smart Service, ask if we can deliver it tonight and drop it off. Then we can just tow it up there with the truck tonight and leave it. Sound good? I called you too, call me. -
this, i do believe, is the weirdest thread i've ever read. I keep thinking "thats not me, i'm not looking to buy another RX yet..." This is bound to get confusing.

Tell me about the spider
Subarutex replied to gravelRX's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The BIGGEST difference between an NA and a Turbo spider manifold is the turbo has the coolant plumbing for the turbo, coming off the thermostat area. I used an NA manifold, and had to end up Tee-ing my coolant line off my heater connection. Luckily the IC hides a little bit of that... but all the same, its kinda ghetto. When I put it in, I noticed quite a bit of gain. First, it drops a lot more pressure when the blow off valve vents... which makes turbo lag more evident. I fixed this by making my stock WRX BOV on my IC into a 50/50 BOV. I routed a hose back to the air intake, just before the turbo. Problem solved. I also don't have a lumpy idle thing that I used to. Not only does it perform better, but now... it looks way cooler. I got rid of about 10" of intercooler plumbing (from the IC to the intake) when I did the swap. Highly suggest it. 8-10 on the neato scale. Would do again in a heartbeat. (i'd make sure and get a turbo one first though) -
Tex, about your front struts
Subarutex replied to gravelRX's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok, here's how it goes in the front: STock RX top mounts (strut tops) Stock RX springs Stock 2.5rs struts (came without springs or tops, thus the reason why i reused my old ones) XT6 lower arm, tie rod ends, spindle, front sway bar... The springs are not as wide as the impreza perches, but they seem to seat just fine anyways. I'm probally going to get some tein s-tech front WRX lowering springs (used maybe $15-$20) and swap those in. I think that will bring my front end down. I'd prefer it to be a little bit lower. Eventually, I will be taking my strut mount holes at the top (in engine bay) and redrilling and rotating so it matches the modern impreza way. After that comes about a grand worth of neat adjustable coilovers at all 4 corners. That way I can get the lowered stance for the street, with the nice performance of some really stiff springs. And, if the occasion arises i need some more ground clearance (rallyx) I can crank them up a bit, and soften the load rating. I'll probally go with Tein on these... they seem to be always for sale used on NASIOC. Side question... Did you put the xt6 rear sway bar in? I didn't, and I now have no "push" going into corners. In fact, its a lot easier to kick the arse end out on anything more than damp pavement and full throttle. -
Ok, these I think are my final choice. Nice looking, and smaller than the 18" Enkei's. 2000 Subaru 2.5rs 6 spoke alloys. See them here!

I think my front diff is out inthe wagon, but i'm not entirely sure. I want someone with experienced ears to come take a trip with me around the block, and see if we can track this damn noise down. So then i can start tearing into it, with some sort of direction and purpose. I'm just north of Seattle... More north than Zapar though, but not as north as Subafly. Thanks.

Wagon is down for the count. Can the RX make it? Not looking to get a tree I don't think, but would like to tag along for a fun outing. -
PNWSEC - what is to become of this club???
Subarutex replied to Subie Gal's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
post i made on the nasioc site: I'm a Hatchpatroller. I'm also a PNWSEC member. My experience has been a lot better with the old school group, than the new. One, i don't feel connected in anyway to pnwsec except for the card I have in my wallet. Even if i had phone numbers, i don't think i'd call anyone from it, expecting to get help, borrow a tool, or make arrangements for a get together. I can pickup the phone right now, and call 3, 4, 5 different people, all Hatchpatrol members and know, for a fact, that the person on the other end is going to try and help me, invite me over to change my axle in his garage, or want to drive up into the mountains for a bbq. What i'm trying to illustrate here, is that PNWSEC seems to be too big to get that personal feel that I get from the Hatchpatrol. This personal feel is what every car club should be about. How can we, as subaru enthusiasts, make PNWSEC personal? Can we make it perfect for everyone? There are lots of informal groups here that have this personal feel, don't think that I don't understand that. Everything seems to be working on this level. Groups of people getting together and having fun. PNWSEC shouldn't be one think trying to mesh all these groups into one, its done that, and has been broughten to its knees. I propose we divide. Each group that decides to step forward as an informal entity should. Hatchpatrollers, GC8er's, Show&shine people, etc. Each group will do its own thing, organize its own outings, get togethers (as we pretty much already do now anyways). The change is, that instead of one huge get together we try and every 3 months have one big get together. The informal groups will draw out of a hat for which one they will "host." There is no requirement for what should be done at these huge get togethers, no mandatory monetary investments. Everyone doesn't have to show up, if you do, great... you'll have a blast. If you miss one, no big deal. For Example: Hatchpatrollers organize a campout and trail run for a weekend. Show&Shineer's organize a carshow/bbq, perhaps to benefit a charity (already been done) WRXer's organize a massive install day. GC8er's organize a track day. If we all take it upon ourselves to do these big things, in our little groups, we can actually get them done. Its not the same people planning everything. If you plan it, and no one comes, maybe it was bad timing, or it was too exspensive. If you plan it, and tons of people come, it will be a great experience. Thats a lot of rambling, some good thoughts though. -
Good! Some one making the cam leap before me. I would like to know... what duration of cams, and how much you are paying When all is said and done, i'll probally be on your heels if it seems this is a good way to get more pep out of the old girls!

'87 RX Project Update (56K Beware)

are any ea82 manifolds compatible with ea81's? I have no idea. Hopefully someone will know. -
'87 RX Project Update (56K Beware)
Subarutex replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, i noticed a difference between the spider and the normal. Spider feels better. I got mine from an NA xt. Had a couple problems because of that. Mainly, there was no tube coming from the thermostat to the turbo. So i had to tee my line to the turbo off a heater hose. Also, i had to transfer my injectors over. I can't remember exactly what tires the rims came with. They are 40 series though...thinking 205/40/18's... -
'87 RX Project Update (56K Beware)
Subarutex replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm not too sure what my sensor calc and sensor number settings are, i can certainly check though. I noticed when i was running 10psi of boost, that i wasn't hitting fuel cut hardly ever (with the S-AFC) Now I am running 13psi of boost, and I seem to be hitting it all the time. I've adjusted the SAFC a little bit, but i think the answer really lies in this: DIY FCD I'm currently about half way through wiring this up on a perf board. Hopefully in a month or so I'll get it installed and tested. The tubing is all a combination of Lowes (hardware store) and schucks. Same goes for the piece that connects the air filter to the MAF, or so the previous owner MikeW told me, he's the one that did the original CAI setup, i just reused that piece. The old enkei's are far from crappy. I've never seen another set like them. Most of the old people here haven't either. These are rare wheels. There is a bit of curb rash. How much are you looking at spending Freak? -
'87 RX Project Update (56K Beware)
Subarutex replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'll be putting them up for sale here soon. I need to clean them, and take some good pics and stuff. -
I don't know the website i ordered it from. It was a while ago. My girlfriend found the site one night. The place was out of the UK. Something like C+C motorsports or something similar.

Well, i haven't posted about the car in awhile. Thought I'd show off what I've been up to the last couple of months. First off, I'd like to thank all the people that have helped me out with my endeavors. Andy, Corky, you guys rock! Just today, I finished off the car. I'll show before, then afters...then i'll explain whats going on! Engine Before: Engine After: As you can see, i've swapped in the spider intake. I also put in an xt6 flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate. And remade the cold air intake, that I made an aluminum divider for. Car Before: Car After: Now I'm sporting an XT6 5 lug swap. In front, i have 2.5rs struts, with the stock RX springs in them. XT6 front spindles, brakes, axles, lower control arms, and sway bar. In the rear, i just have the XT6 hubs, rotors, and backing plates. The wheels are 18" Enkei CDR-9's. I've only rubbed once. I think the wheels are a bit too big, and I'll probally get some 16's or 17's for it instead. Current mod list - Engine: 13psi with boost controller, WRX intercooler w/BOV, spider intake, custom CAI, XT6 flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate Suspension: 5 lug swap, XT6 sway bar, RS struts Electronics: Apexi S-AFC (fuel control computer, sorta), Apexi Turbo timer w/ A/F ratio gauge Other: Hood Scoop, 18" rims, Boost gauge

Yes, I too would like to know what time. Especially since I have a needed tool.
