  1. Car is a long way from home. Not sure I'm williing to do the 6 hour drive to find out....
  2. Test drove a 1996 Legacy, only 94K miles. Power good, shifts fine, no chatter on turns. No transmission pump noise. Noticed that the tranny felt like I was driving through mud. Felt this way on turns, straight away, all the time. It felt like the tranny was sticky. I am wondering if this is the same as torque bind? I've noticed the same "thickness" in cars I've driven with torque bind. Would a simple transmission power flush fix it? Plus maybe some lube guard. Tranny fluid looks good, but not bright pink, so some room for improvement. Cannot afford to buy another lemon, but not many choices here in iowa. Really need help on this one. Car is not cheap. Do have a lead on another car also..does have torque binding....not nearly as expensive, also low miles. Need to make a choice tomorrow. Thanks. ps. Does a power flush ever actually fix something...or only delay problems?
  3. I know that LubeGuard is used to help prevent torque binding. Is there another product also? What is the best choice? Don't feel like wadding through 4 pages of "torque binding" search to find it. Sorry. Its been a really long month. Also, what brand of tranny fluid do people like?
  4. Looks like I need to buy a good fuel pressure tester. Would of course like snapon or Mac, but $$$$. If I bought one at my local O'rielly's or Napa, do you think it would be reliable? Still $40. Not cheap. Would hate to misdiagnose a problem due to bad equipment. Fuel pumps aren't cheap. would anyone ever recommend a junk yard fuel pump? Also, does anyone know how the two fuel pump system works on a Legacy? My Haynes manual says the AWD have two fuel pumps. BTW: 91 Legacy
  5. Has anyone ever heard of a fuel pump screen/filter deteriorating with age and sending debris into the fuel line? Just curious.
  6. I know driving with badly mismatched tires can damange the transmission. The question is, if the two rear tires are badly mismatched, can it damage the rear differential? Thanks.
  7. My car isn't running right. New fuel filter, pressure okay from the pump...but not okay just before the fuel filter. Has anyone ever heard of a blockage in the fuel feed line inbetween the fuel filter and fuel pump...maybe where the fuel line runs along the inside of the drivers compartment? I am wondering if I somehow got a piece of debris into the fuel line when I was doing the fuel hoses...but not sure how. Does the fuel pump pick up screen ever fall aprat and allow debris to enter the fuel lines? I am posting this here because the old generation gang knows a lot about old parts and what happens to them over time.
  8. Okay. Is there anything relatively inexpensive to repair in section 4? Just humor me on this one. Long story. Actually, it looks like there are only 4 main sections...maybe output shaft itself is #5. wish I had a factory diagram
  9. Looking at the picture, is the duty C solenoid actually bolted up to the tailshaft housing? If section 4 has a problem, what types of problems would it have?
  10. if memory serves me right the rough idle problem on my legacy started about the same time that I replaced the fuel filter...give or take a few months. Forgot to document problem...so not sure. I used a cheap autozone part. I am wondering...could it be bad? What brand of fuel filters are worth paying for? not wanting to spend an arm, leg and two chickens for OEM filter.
  11. My tranny was toasted by running for 14K miles with mismatched tires. I think 8K is enough to do damage...especially if only one is mismatched
  12. what is in section 4? Is that where the duty C solenoid or other solenoids are located...if there is a problem in #4, what types of problems could there be? Strange question, I know. Humor me.
  13. 1995 Legacy, 154K miles. Haven't seen it. 3 hour drive from my house. Trying to decide if worth the drive...thats 3 hours each way! They say they haven't done a tranny service any time in the last year or two. Not sure when last done. automatic, obviously. So the 1996 has a steel liner in the tailshaft?
  14. Is the AWD Legacy tranny in sort of 5 different sections? From front to back, what are they? Of course #1 is torque converter, #2 is front differential, #3? #4? #5 is the tail shaft housing. Guess I need to know whats in sections 3 and 4 and where does the torque binding occur? In 3 or 4? Thanks.
  15. I talked with a nice lady who is selling a Legacy. She has driven 8K miles with one new tire and 3 tires with 24K+ miles on them. What are the chances she toasted the tranny?
  16. Found the ohm specs. All injectors read between 11.4 and 12.3. But the #4 is a little weird. Sometimes reads 14.4, other times 10.8 or 10.2 not sure what to make of it. Hate to spend more money on something that is just sort of not right. Hate this car more.
  17. Did the intake manifold gasket. No problems. Car still not running right. What are the ohm specs for the fuel injectors? Do I measure across the two prongs on the injector itself? I hate this car.
  18. I may be in trouble. Just tightened all of them to 24 ft lbs. Looking at diagram, think...was probably a bad idea because long bolts are on front edge of gasket. May cause a leak. Should have waited for an anwer here first. Question: CAN I BACK OFF THE BOLTS OR IS IT TOO LATE FOR THAT? Once gasket compressed, have to leave it the way it is? Or replace the gasket? URGHH!!!
  19. I'm looking at the factory manual. It says only 5 ft lbs on the short intake manifold bolts, and 21-25 ft lbs on the longer ones. I have never heard of different torque specs on bolts for the same gasket. Sounds like a recipie for disaster. Any feedback. May torque them all to 21-25 to get equal pressure on the gasket. BTW 1991 2.2L non turbo
  20. I did, but if you pull the manifold straight up, it doesn't clear the steering lines. Probably won't be a problem, just have to angle it a bit. Real concern is wiring harness...pull with intake? I looks like I have to but wanted to check.
  21. What I really need to know is what to do with the wiring harness. It must lift up with the manifold...I can't see any other way. Need help with this one!!! Already have many boxes full of parts. Getting scared now. Also need to know...the evap canister vacuum lines don't look like they will clear the power steering lines when I lift up the manifold. Do I need to take the steering pump loose or can I tilt the manifold to clear the lines?
  22. on a 1991 2.2L engine, any tips on doing the intake manifold job. Do I have to disconnect the AC compressor from its mount? Does the coolant crossover pipe under the manifold connect to the manifold ? Thanks.
  23. finally contacted previous owner. Discovered that oil pump was not resealed with timing belt at 160K so will do the work anyway just in case
  24. If the oil pump needs resealing, does the car fail to get oil pressure right away on every cold start or is it intermitant? I am asking because, when my car was running poorly, it would take awhile to build up pressure...not long, just longer than normal. But since I have replaced the crankshaft sensor, it seems to get oil pressure just fine on cold starts. Hate to tear it apart if I don't need to.
