  1. posting from a phone, at work, on break so let me say sorry in advance.I changed drivers side steering boot, cv bots (and repacking), and wheel bearings. now in order to drive straight the steering wheel has to be turned 90deg to the right. I am thinking my steering arm may be out of adjustment. anything else I am missing here?
  2. Car: 1983 DL First off, thanks to Nug for his great photo write up. I found i was having a hard time with pounding the bearings back in to place. I was worried about damaging them and was lacking a proper tool to hit them evenly. All i did was take a old wheel bearing and run it over a wheel grinder (use safetyglasses!!!! and gloves, i know gloves are bad on a wheel grinder but the bearing gets HOT!!) for about 10 min. Let the outer race of the bearing slowly spin in your hand, this helps with a nice even grind. This brought the outside diameter down about 1mm or so, just enough for it to push the new bearing in to the hub assembly without getting stuck. This also works good for pounding the seals in because the gap between the inner and outer races of the bearing make a fine spot for the raised lip of the seal to hide while you are beating on it. If anyone happens to be doing wheel bearings and is without a wheel grinder i would be willing to ship my little bearing off to them as long as they paypal me 5 bucks or so for shipping and return it when they are done. Thanks, hope this helps. Erik
  3. Did some searching, i have a pretty good handle on what i need to do, figured i would post up in case someone has a better idea. Gripe: Heater / Vent inop, no air comes from the vents, no matter what i do. Nor is there any "blower" sound, ruling out the chance that it is obstructed or the vents are just stuck shut (or something). Checked the fuse, it's good. Plan: inspect the motor (once i locate it), i figure it looks just like every other blower motor on the face of the earth, black roundish, made of plastic. Attempt to run 12v through the motor at the connections, if motor fires up, i then cry, and start ripping my dash apart. if the motor does not fire up, i then cry and start to try to find one of these things (are they rare? interchangeable? What am i looking at here, i saw one quote for something like 50 bucks which is not bad at all, but it was for another year). After that it's just good old fassioned wire chasing, i do this as a job on aircraft, but cars are so much more of a pain in the rump roast. Like i said, i got a fairly good handle on this, i think.. I just wanted to see if anyone else has some gouge that i may not know. Appreciated, Erik
  4. No that's not it, this is a silver one with intact glass. I know what you mean, i just need something the move myself and the dog around. The WRX will be down for a while until i find a stock down pipe and even once it's up it will be a while before my brat is done. I need a reliable box to move myself and my mutt up and down the state in. Perferably one with a subaru emblem on the front of it. I get payed on friday and will have the last few hundred i need to pick it up, if i can't talk him down a little i may still buy it. That is unless i find a nice little wagon somewhere close by instead.
  5. I know what you are saying. trustme I would love to find a 4wd. what I am really looking for though is just a reliable wagon to move my german shepherd and I around.lack of power steering does not bother me. he car is so light I did not even notice it until I was pulling back in.my problem is that every older subie I find has a laundry list of problems. this car seems pretty good, yeah I know there will be big repairs own the road and I am ready for that. if I could find a solid 4 wd wagon for 1000 I would tackle it.posting from my phone, sorry for any errors
  6. 280xxx (or was it 250xxx i can't remember) meh, when you hit that level does it matter?? no rust that i can find, solid body 2wd everything looks like it works, drives solid, typical cracked signals, one with a broken spot on the plastic. Guy wants 1000 for it. I test drove it and it drives and feels great. What am i missing? What should i be looking for? Am i paying too much?
  7. god damnit. i was putting the steering shaft back in to the steering assembly when i noticed my mistake. the welder suggested that he extend the shaft towards the middle because the metal was thicker and he oculd get a stronger weld. LIke a moron i said sure. What this did was push that little white plastic seal out past the end of the steering assembly. Looks like this device was designed to prevent dirt and moisture from getting up in to the cabin, and to a lesser extend help support the steering shaft. I guess my options now are to go and have him take apart and reweld the whole thing again, or to extend the housing down 4.25 inches so everything can seal back up again. Somehow i just new this would happen.
  8. Hey i found a guy in town last night to help me out. Owns a welding shop, charged me 20 bucks and it was done the next day. looks like he did a good job to boot. thanks for the offer though.
  9. Brat is lifted up 4 inches, need the steering linkage extended. Went to a few shops in oak harbor today and they pretty much laughed at me. Nobody wants to touch it due to the liability. Anyone know where i can go get a quality welding job?
  10. Hey there, i sent you a email earlier, but maybe i botched the addy. I want to buy a set of your wheels!!!!! looking for 5 in black that fit a 82 brat. You can contact me @ (three six zero) 320 eight three zero three Or PM me. I hope you still have some left. Erik
  11. i am a Navy reservest now (lawl) and i get to work this weekend. so sadly, no. If you are good to go, i will give you a call this weekend, or next week. i can have this heap sitting in your driveway as soon as next wed!!!!! "que dramatic music!"
  12. Ok, So i have this BRAT, in great shape, just needs a motor. I am thinking about a EJ22 conversion, in fact i just bought the adapter kit for it the other day (motor to tranny adapter). The kind man who offered to help me earlier ran in to some Real Life issues and is now unable. My life right now: a)Home repairs and remodel b)x girlfriend moving out c) lots of military work d) ski season I seriously dont have time to get this brat back up and running, however iwant to use it as my ski vehicle (other car is a too pretty, and too low WRX... i know, the irony of owning a subaru that you dont want to take in the snow.... yes, i am a *********.). I live in Oak Harbor washington. And currently i have more money than time (a rare instance for me). Is there anyone in the local area who would like to take over this project, to get the car up and running for me and make a fair paycheck in the process? The gentleman who was helping me (and still is from a advisor standpoint) has a motor (ej22), I just right now, would honestly like to throw this *************** on a trailer and have someone else worry about it. I know it does not look good to say that, but i am swamped right now. Anyone out there interested? I am looking for quality, reliability, and fast work. price for the work is negociable, the faster you get this running, the more i pay you. Erik
  13. Hey again, it looks like i got a winner of a EA81 motor for my brat this weekend. However i need to be honest with my self and while i have no problem removing/replacing a motor, the guts of it are pretty much alien to me. What i want is it to get looked over in order for me to get a warm fuzzy prior to stuffing it as i dont want to do this on the brat ever again. I have a new clutch waiting in the garage, and a full gasket set as well if needed. Can anyone reccomend a good shop in the northern puget sound area?
  14. Hi, i have a 1982 brat that is great except for the motor, i need a new one. I tried aaron's auto wrecking with no luck. This poor car has been sitting in my garage for months now and its time for me to get moving on it. What i need is a motor/carb ea81 don't care about the kind of carb anymore. OR if anyone could be so kind to suggest a sutiable replacement that a novice like me could install that would be great. this is starting to really freak me out, and i could use a hand if there is any help out there. Erik
  15. Thanks man! This Brat was my present to my self when i got out. I sold my leave instead of going on terminal, ended up with a 5000+ final paycheck.
  16. So the motor is disconnected from everything but the tranny, i need to look up what to do for that so i dont end up eating crap later on. Should be out before this weekend, that reminds me i need to order a gasket set. I should have all sorts of brat parts for trade/free by the time this is over. I dont see alot of what i am pulling out going back in. Erik.
  17. no my fault, i was not clear on what i had in my car and you assumed that i had the 32/36. i dont think that in its own right there is anything wrong with the carter-webber. Just that finding support for it is proving to be a challenge. I plan on upgrading to a 32/26 hope we are both on the same sheet now. erik
  18. i have not been able to find a rebuild kit for this webber. there is no part number anywhere on the carb (i have it removed and was able to turn it all over to look), and when i go to ANY parts store or go online all i get is the hitachi rebuild kit... every place seems to have atleast 3 of them laying around. but nothing for my webber. Why/how should i maintain a carburator that there are no support parts for? your advice on that subject would be great.
  19. Ok, so i bought this great brat, something went sick with the fuel system (i have a thread about it stalling) and so i started pulling things off the car. I have a compulsion when it comes to removing and inspecting things... probably got it from work (former Marine jet mechanic). The motor has over 200,000 miles on it and things are a bit gummed up i guess. I removed the egr valve for example to find that it was totally filled with soot. Like so filled that i did not even know that there were holes in it to flow exhaust through. Old car, no big deal. I am thinking about pulling the motor and breaking it down shotgun style for a good cleaning and a gasket replacement go-around. Problem: while i am comfortable working on my own car, have done all my work on my stage 4 wrx, and am pretty mechanical minded i have never got knee deep in to the guts of a motor.. Am i overly worried? How hard is a complete gasket overhaul? is that overkill? I have a very small oil leak that *may* be a oil pan gasket but it is looking like something a little more nasty that i want to kill anway. And again, the motor is filthy with age and built up soot and grime. Not to mention that i am going to burry the POS "cant find parts anywhere for" webber carb and go another route. I assume that i would have to buy a cherry picker and a stand, even though the motor looks like two small girls can lift it out with out even curling the toes in their jellies. no big deal. So who here has overhauled a 1.8? what am i getting my self in to? ************er is probably going to come out anyway, i think i found the only spot of rust on the car, and its down by the motor. it has to die. erik
  20. nope, still doing it. so i pulled out the carb, i cannot find a rebuild kit for it so i am going to look in to replacing it my self. ANY advice on this subject would be nice. erik
  21. i took my egr valve off and found it totally clogged up with soot. i soaked it for a while and chipped away at it in both the valve and on the motor. by totally clogged i mean it looked like soot was fully injected in to the valve and left to harden. could this possibly be the problem? erik
