  1. does the smoke smell really bad? if so, gear oil or possibly cv joint grease. if not, coolant is sweet-ish smelling, the smoke really doesn't make sense but, symptoms somewhat line-up with a broken axle so, I'm going with 'you need a transmission - time to call car-part.com'
  2. some folks buy the Harbor freight engine lift, then sell it after the work is done. look for some subaru clutch job videos on youtube. ask all your friends/relatives if they have ever wrenched that deep on a car, offer them pizza and beers to help.
  3. WRX got some attention, replaced discharge hose on the A/C. Best to pull out the overflow tank but everything else was easy. Used a vacuum pump, hoping to pull a little moisture out but, disappointed it wouldn't get below about 18-20. So, I may be wrong about the hose being bad (previous use of UV dye sorta hinted at it.) I'll know in a few weeks if that was it - took about 5=6 weeks to leak out last time. Maybe something with my manifold rig was leaking a little under vacuum. Need to do an oil change and install outside temp sensor (at last). want to drive to CoSpgs. The car needs other attention but, nothing that probably can't wait.
  4. The ECU gets a variable signal from it based on throttle (gas pedal) position. That allows the ECU to adjust the flow of fuel thru the injectors - possibly also passing info to the transmission control unit for proper gear selection. others here can give you more details (and will correct my statement if I got it confused lol)
  5. I got pulled over with my family members in a rented van coming back from a cruise - could be anything that triggers it I guess. They probably saw the van low on its suspension...? My snake-keeping friend goes to Big Bend/Chisos Mts. every year or 2. He gets pulled over and 'sniffed' half the time. Take some paperwork with you indicating what's going on with the 1079. I suggest dead tree, not just a pdf on a phone. Just to cover the bases. A lot of small towns on secondary roads will be speed traps, just try to observe the decreasing limits when you approach, and DO NOT just floor it leaving town either. Some of them could be down to 25mph in town, and maybe less if there's a school zone. It's a major revenue source. A few decades ago, Texas had to pass a law that no township could receive more than 25% or w'ever of there $$$ from traffic violations lol! West Texas is the most insane part of the State. A lot of 'burn-outs' and anti-social types seek out the solitude of that area.
  6. slipped timing belt might be a possibility. Bring the sprockets to their marks and do a tooth count (find your engine's tooth count online) might be off 1 tooth somewhere.
  7. I've seen a front LSD on ebay I think, dunno about fitment or quality....
  8. Be aware, a large vehicle in S TX is likely to get pulled over by BP/ICE. Just be cool about it. Not sure in NM or AZ.....
  9. sorry for the thread hijack TnotDIY only thing I have run across in the past, some Subaru models sold in other markets have higher tow limits than the same model sold in the USA. Maybe due to generally lower speed limits overseas or some 'nanny g'mint' safety ruling in this country?
  10. How old is the fuel? maybe try some HEET in case there's water in the fuel?
  11. Planning to sleep in the back or moteling it....? Just the trip from DFW to Amarillo will likely go from around 5 hours to 7 or so.
  12. sure the engine is seized? I think sometimes,- like rod failure? - you can wrench them in one direction but not the other ?
  13. seriously? I'm gonna keep this in mind - we could maybe 'convoy' from DFW to CoSpgs. at Present, I plan to overnight in Amarillo.......just don't have a firm timeframe yet. hmmmmm
  14. checked the trans fluid while idling right? fluid look OK? it someitimes happens that a trans gets the wrong fluid put in it. should be reddish - maybe very clear read if changed recently. is the trans pan dented? did the previous owner change the trans or engine?
  15. be sure to cycle the security on/off with the fob. Maybe it thinks it's being stolen and security has locked it out?
  16. I have read reports that the WindoWeld stuff is quite durable. Just have to tolerate the downtime for curing.
  17. So far, I like the Kartboy links on my WRX. some folks have just done Mevotech arm swaps - occasionally with a swap of the chinese ball joint to a Soob one.
  18. so weird that the system still fires the plugs..... what happens of fuel hoses were misrouted?
  19. I dunno if it's worth the effort, but you might contact SOA. A regional rep might be able to do some kind of 'goodwill' compensation. 1/2 the cost ot pay for the labor if you pay for parts, etc. Dealerships 'generally' have no incentive or authority to do that kind of thing. Just seems like an oddly rapid failure of what is generally a robust part of a car - unless there's evidence of tampering/damage...?
  20. next morning, maybe a helper could 'pace' the car to determine if the noise is central (maybe diff mounts?) or on one side (brake or suspension?) do you set the parking brake? many parts could be suspect on a 21 year old car.
  21. did the stall happen immediately after refueling? what was the source of the new fuel pump and did you examine the cap/o-ring on the old one? how many miles on this engine?
