  1. if all 4 tires are not identical, that could be a red flag. you might consider paying a soob-friendly shop to do a pre-purchase inspection. Use any minor/moderate issues found to negotiate a better price.
  2. ^^^^ +1 you can also judiciously squirt some water around the wires/coil from a plant mister bottle. better 'show' at night but, just listen/watch for increased stumbling from the engine.
  3. checked coolant level in the radiator? don't trust the overflow. pressure test the cooling system, maybe some pinhole somewhere is spraying coolant like crazy? seems so odd to have coolant in all 4 plug holes though.....
  4. refills are fiddly to deal with too , the coupla times I tried it, seemed like a 2 person operation lol!- but they can be ordered if you can't find them locally. Subaru dealers used to have refills for the STI wiper blades at one time.....
  5. fuel pressure regulators can leak fuel into their vacuum line. Pull and look for wetness?
  6. coil failures are rare and you're right , multiple simultaneous coil failures approaching impossible. look for oil on the coil boots, maybe leaking VC gaskets ? check battery and changing system health. If it misfires or runs rough at idle and squirting some starting fluid in the intake smooths it out - that would indicate a fueling problem I think.
  7. recent fuel fill-up? maybe bad gas how olde is the battery? any recent repairs or wrecks? any additional codes?
  8. we have threads about wipers fairly often so, you might search for that. I'm fond of the Trico hybrid design - Teflon Shield , and their Exact Fit for the rear wiper.
  9. goodridge makes a line of SS brake hoses - you might try to find a catalog? what pads are on it now? Name brand ceramic are great for daily driven vehicles, economy pads are usually pretty bad - they may gri OK (or not)p, but they won't last. I run Centric PosiQuiet Ceramic on our 03. many people really like the improved feel of master cylinder braces to reduce firewall flex. Perrin, maybe cusco, grimmspeed, kartboy...? might offer them.
  10. the prices on LEDs in general are good now. I put led in front marker positions a few years ago, had some left over from the purchase, and last year failed inspection for rear license lights, put 2 in there. they will probably outlive their sockets, be shining after I'm dead lol! They 'were' seriously the best option for difficult to service applications and high vibration applications - perfect for transportation really. Now, they're good almost everywhere. So much better than CFLs - ugh.
  11. the ones he linked DO look better than most other designs. I think there also are some with a conical reflector that have the LEDs shining backwards onto them that may also work. Some them have set screws that require adjusting the rotation of the unit in the reflector. but, MOST still spray too much above/outside of proper cut-offs and 'appear' brighter for that reason. I would proceed carefully and make sure I could return them if they don't work well. Most of the LED upgrades on the road are annoying. also, please don't get purple - stay at bright white/ 6K or under if possible.
  12. ^^^ what he said or, consider pulling the heads and properly installing multi layer steel head gaskets - it probably needs a timing belt system service and the oil pump back plate resealed too.
  13. everyone makes mistakes, it's how you handle it that makes the difference. maybe not the same, but on a coupla occasions I have given shops lottery tickets or taken pastries by at opening for helping me with free advice.
  14. Pretty sure I have read 2 or 3 instances of those leaking. Not common - though perhaps as these cars age we will see this more often?
  15. could someone have grabbed the wrong rims or tried to mount rims that were too small?
  16. there's a little info on the different alarm systems at www.cars101.com did you get an owner's manual? that's all I got, others here will probably have details.
  17. bgirls - if the car can be driven safely, take it to a car parts retailer and have them scan the ECU for trouble codes. there could be more than one. List them here for us. they will look like P0420 or similar ( P x x x x )
  18. first, here's a chance for an upgrade - check www.crutchfield.com second, this Forum and www.subaruoutback.com have classified ad sections. post a WTB (want to buy) and maybe someone has a unit they pulled-out when they upgraded, or, they can pick one up from a wreck, etc. you might also check www.car-part.com for a used unit
  19. knock sensor, plug wires, rodent damage, water in gas.... scanning for codes could help a lot.
  20. um, OK, if the ABS light is on, you could have a bad sensor or wiring to a sensor at one of the wheels. On older cars, there could just be some rush on the sensor. if you want to disable ABS, that may require taking a connector loose somewhere. maybe I'm confused.
