94 Loyale won't shift into FWD
mortimc replied to Mark Humble's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have the same problem, all hoses appear to be intact and not leaking. Is there any way to tell if the diaphragm or cable system is working properly? -
I have a bunch of stuff from the front end of a 89 hatch including bumper, that shiny bar along the bottom, some headlights, antiroll bar, and a box of goodies. If someone came and took all of it I would be happy, I would feel bad tossing all of it. 301 Gladstone across from the toyota dealership on Ellis in the york dist. Feel free to call. 206 819 9899 Clayton

Doesnt the SPFI use a higher pressure pump, I coulda sworn I saw that in the FSM
-
I do have the both complete factory service manuals for the 88 and 85, but I was hoping that perhaps someone has dealt with this before so they could point me in the right direction before I dive in.

I am putting a 1985 MPFI turbo EA82 in an 88 SPFI wagon I have already installed the engine, the engine bay portion of the wiring harness, and the computer. All the prepherial things work, including the starter. But there is not power to the fuel pump or the starter. Many of the plugs were the same but I have a feeling that doesnt mean anything. Many other plugs are still homeless. Looking for any experienced help. Clayton

So, theres a bit of a story to this so ill try to make it simple. I aquired GL-10 that had a turbo motor put it in, definatly not stock motor. Took motor out along with wiring harness and computer with hopes to put it something else. no compression in one cylinder to I took it apart to fint a completely anialiated bottom end. I had a few naturally asperated bottom ends sitting around so I proceeded to create a higher compression boosted engine that would eventually blow up but be fun in the meantime. SO! looking at the FSM I notice a knock sensor in the diagram, as well as a controll unit, as well as a distributor with 4 wires (mine has 2). This engine/car(which I no longer have) was robbed or denied of it knock sensor stuff. So what the hell do I do? I am aware I can buy all this stuff, but I dont have any money for this project. And I have been learning a lot about knock at school lately and I realize this is a very critical component. Clayton

So my GL-10 (which will be for sale) only ran on three cylinders, I narrowed it down to a compression problem, checked it and sure enough that is the problem. I started tearing it apart and got the head off, without taking the engine out mind you. There are absolutely no detectable problems, aside from the fact the cam section which bolts onto the head was missing three bolts. So, im going to put it all back together unless someone has a suggestion. Clayton

Why Brat Seats Are Hard To Find
mortimc replied to Durania's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The million dollar question. What does an Asian import tax on US chicken have to do with the seats in the back of a Subaru Brat? (this is truly why there are seats in Brat beds) Clayton Mortimer Bellingham WA -
Get another E-brake lever and hook it up to one of the cables, one lever for each wheel, free turning brake!

My Friend and I are swapping an engine form his old 2wd justy into a junked 4wd justy. I suggest you do the same if possible. It is possible to do a 4wd swap but you would have to find a donor car anyways. And you can fit 13's on there if you havnt already done that, i had a justy for a while, wrecked it in the snow. check out the pic on my photos. Clayton

I was recently talking to Doc. Seal the other day at the Vehicle Research Institute (VRI) at WWU. I was asking him about diesels in subarus and he said, along with developing the DOHC EA81 engine for the Quattro San, both he and Subaru developed their own working diesels and they both came to the conclusion that it wasnt a good idea. Even though at the time they were pretty sure that it would work well. Our engines simply dont have the proper surface area to bore ratio. So it doesnt really matter how much compression the engine can make, even though aparently the engine could take the loads. Seal agreed that a VW diesel engine would be best suited for a subaru, and it would work well with the transmission. There is a lot of diesel VW engines at the VRI as well as Subaru transmissions so, when I get some free time, one of my projects will be to make an adapter plate, I have made an adapter plate to connect an electric motor to a mazda transmission and its not that difficult. I dont know a thing about engine electronics and luckly diesles have barely any, so im surprised one of us doesnt have one yet, and im all for biodiesel! Clayton Bellingham

Strange encounter in Bellingham
mortimc replied to mortimc's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It doesnt appear to be lifted, its a wagon, and it has round headlights(what year has round headlights). Its in pretty good condition, and its as blue as the blue on the USMB background. Its been there for a couple years, and the woman said I wasnt the only person who has "came looking to steal the wheels." Clayton -
(Crazy Idea thread) What'll happen if...
mortimc replied to fbh's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) You can use is to make a mold if you know anyone who can do sandcasting. We've used this process at the Vehicle Research Institute at WWU to make intake runners. Worked well... Clayton Bellingham -
I am going out on a limb here, but I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the blue early 80's subaru with pug rims and a couple lights on the roof, it lives in the york dist. in Bellingham? I just stopped by this evening to look at it and an old woman came out of the house and told me the the car belonged to her son and it might be for sale, but the made it sound like it would cost an arm and a leg. She went on to say that I probably just wanted the rims, and she seemed to think that I was going to steal the car! I asked if she had a way to contact her son and she was very persistant that he couldnt be reached. Anyways, just thought I would share this subaru tale with you guys. Clayton Bellingham ps. maybe ill take a pic of it and post it.

My windshield wipers take one swipe every couple minutes or so (dont know exactly) I can still turn them on and use them though. I havnt given it much thought because it doesnt bother me that much. Sorry no reward for this one folks. Clayton Bellingham WA p.s. looking for front end parts for 81 hatch (struts, rack and pinion, tie rods, steering etc.)

The dilemma is would I be an idiot to let this car go??
-
Wait, are you guys saying that this car rolled out of the factory WITH the turbo?? The person I got it from said that her friend put that engine in there, perhaps the engine that was replaced WAS a turbo? (What kind of headaches?) Clayton Bellingham
-
Ok, heres the deal, I just got this free 2wd 85 GL-10, yeah, big deal right, but someone put a MPFI turbo engine in it! It doesnt run to great right now, seems like a timing/ignition problem. The turbo looks splendid, no oil leaking from anywhere. Basically I dont know what to do with the car, and I dont know how much it is worth. I should really just fix er up and sell it. But, I dont know if I can let go of this motor, all depends on how much I could get for this car. I am also tempted to swap motors with my 88 4wd d/r wagon and then sell the 2wd. Any suggestions or ideas would be great. And I dont know a thing about the EA82T if anyone has any suggestions about how to get it running right. (Wont idle, runs very rough.) Clayton Bellingham

Crazy Idea altering cam timing, might work
mortimc replied to Rollie715's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would suggest taking a look at a Rotory engine, they use two coils for a simotaneous spark(two plugs per rotor). Might help, just a thought. Clayton -
Hey, if you're reading this and you are from bellingham or Whactom county leave a post, where abouts you live and maybe an email address. I thought it would be cool to see how many of us there are in these parts. I know a couple of small places near town for wheeling, I dont like driving my car very far so theyre convenient for me. I live in the York dist. (East of I-5, north of lakeway). Clayton Mortimer mortimc@cc.wwu.edu

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know an engine only needs a harmonic balencer if it has a odd number of cylinders, like a justy motor. Or am i getting termonology mixed up. Anyways, do the work yourself if you feel confident or yer mechanically inclined in any way. Theres plenty of informaton here to help you along. Its not that hard, I taught my girlfriend how to do it (not mechanically inclined, but interisted). I think timing belts are 40 bucks at the most, get the other parts from a junker. It be a good learning experience anyways. Good luck Clayton Bellingham, WA

I think you guys think im talking about the rubber part, to clarify, the parts that broke are the plates between the rubber blocks and the motor itself. Clayton Bellingham

while I'm ripping my GL-10 apart...
mortimc replied to Steven Romero's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When you put the belts on, you want the flywheel at the 0 timing mark, the disty cam at 135degrees clockwise from mark on plastic cover. The other cam is 180 from that, you will be able to notice by eyeballing it if it is one notch out on the belt. And if you have the disty out, the rotor should be pointing at plug 1 at this point. Any question/clarifications just ask, I have a FSM (factory service manual). Clayton Bellingham -
Can't find a throttle cable for EA81!
mortimc replied to markjs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
About the bike cable, go to yer local bike shop and get the tension adjusters that go on the brake levers, those fit right in the firewall hole and the housing fits in that, and just canabalize parts from yer subie. I did it to mine and its way better than the stock setup. Just ask if ya got any questions. Clayton Bellingham
