That is why I left the stock 360 Maubichi motor in mine and didn't even consider the 540, let alone a modern brushless......

While I love the detail of the Tamiya BRAT body I cringe at running it off road for fear of the slightest impact. I would love to find a parma BRAT body but they are pretty rare.

That is one great paint job on the BRAT on the left! I love mine as well. This one is bone stock. The second one is on a Tamiya Bruiser chassis.

I would also like to make an appeal to the owners/mods of the board to make this a sticky here in the "main" forum. While the majority of the board is located in the west and northwest the numbers here are much lower and to get a high attendance turn out we will need all the publicity and visability we can get. I hope that it is reasonable to ask for this sticky to help us reach the sort of attendance and membership that other areas enjoy. I am going to be there for sure with the BRAT and since it will have the new body/paint job done I might just enter it in a few catagories.

I'm thinking this is VERY bad

Of course get a new short block, I am just suggesting it for sh*ts and giggles. It is comedy gold when something like that works. -

Just JB weld it, use the old head gaskets and knowing the EA81 you might just get another 100k. Or it might frag, but screw it, find out right? -

More progress and pics from the body shop
subarubrat replied to subarubrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nothing "happened" to it in so many words, I am just getting a tip to tail body job on it so it looks as good as it runs and performs. -
Went and visited the truck at the shop today again. I hadn't had a chance to get by in a week or so. They have rebuilt the window frame where it was damaged, the sides are cleaned up. The next step is to block it down to nothing then prime and paint. A new set of black beadlocks is on the way too! Note that the gas door and door dings are long gone: The windshild frame and pillars:

So I removed my carpet today...
subarubrat replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't miss the carpet/cloth seats/radio/AC/interior a bit. Bedliner and diamond plate are allot nicer and there is something to be said for washing the interior with the carwash pressure hose. -
See that is what pissed me off so bad. There is no way that they could release that part and not know that the paint bubbles off on the first use. That has to be deliberate. I am stripping mine in all the rusty and bubbly areas. I will PM you about the bumper.

Rossta, it keeps looking better! Is your rear bumper still bent up like that? I may very well have one to give you. If you want to hook up for some off roading let me know, we are less than an hour away from each other. There is a gravel pit in Fredericksburg that is pretty nice to play in. I need to pull and paint my purple hornies when it comes back from the body shop. In one year the paint has nearly fallen off half the thing and with the road salt it rusted over with a quickness. Nice sounding muffler but they could have powdercoated it or used a better paint.

2nd Gen BRAT rust-out ?
subarubrat replied to TomRhere's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
After more than a few of these I looked at the problem in detail and explained it and the fix here: http://www.subarubrat.com/wheelwell.htm -
Saw the BRAT at the shop today.... *Pic added*

I have a few more pics of it out and dirty here and there. The truck has been in periods of development/use and experementation since I bought it about two years ago. The suspension was completed in April about a year ago, the driveline and such this fall, then the body is about to be completed. Now it will look as good as it performs. Once it returns from the body shop I am making some changes, two more inches lift in front and one in the rear. Bigger tires, 1 inch taller and 2.5 inches wider. Then there are a few other driveline changes, perhaps an EG33, and a few other ideas but other than brief periods of modification it will be in regualr use and considered as "done" as it ever will be. The problem with action shots is that I would make a change, go run it then go back into the work cycle and never get around to taking pics. I will try to do better about that. -
If your injectors are THAT high into their duty cycle that they need cooling you need bigger injectors.

Stopped by for a look after work last night. The windshield frame is done and the driver's side appears to be all done as well. The hood was up and the fenders off as well. It looks like it will be painted by mid - week and then it has to sit for a few days before they can mask it to do the bedlining. That puts it ready around the middle of the following week. -

Actually just the one, I nuked reverse in a mudhole that was well over waist deep and I was shifting forward and reverse too fast rocking it out. It could have been avoided and now with the winch it will be avoided. The new 4 spd is holding up fine. I am doing a 5spd swap for GP this summer, but also considering an Outback H6 at the same time. -

Pretty far from stock. I am running a tranny nukin modded ER27 @240Hp. I had some bugs to work out but things are running well now. I have no problem turning or smoking those tires. -
I actually JUST got DSL this last month, I uploaded that one to my web server provider over the course of several attempts over a few hours. I feel your pain.

Here is a video with great sound: http://www.subarubrat.com/PICS/engine.mpg Big but worth it if you have good speakers.

3at to 5-speed swap, what do i need?
subarubrat replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Pedal cage, interior trim, cables, tranny, driveshaft, and Xmember (I think). You will also need a flywheel and clutch assy as the engine in the automatic car now has a flexplate and tourqe converter. -

First off look for rust. Check under the floor mats at the foot wells, check the rear framerails for rot and the wheel wells in the rear. Other areas can rust as well but those are the main ones. Don't worry about the engine or tranny, even if they are FUBARed or missing a good body is worth it. Engines and trannys are a dime a dozen. In fact no matter what is wrong with it as long as the body is good that is what counts. However most of them went to the junkyard with strong drivelines and cancer of the body. Limited slip diffs are out there, there is a great article on converting the 3.7:1 over to 3.9:1 in the USRM on this site. Check out my site for more details on lifts, engine swaps and general off road mods. Look under MY BRAT mods on the left for pics of various mods and I have some articles as well. My BRAT is an 82 as well by the way. BRATs are fantastic off road vehicles, allot like an old Wyllis Jeep when stock. But when you throw a lift and some good tires into the mix the capability skyrockets. Above all, congratulations and welcome to the club. Link to my site is directly below: -
Who had the lifted wagon near Warrenton VA on 29?
subarubrat replied to subarubrat's topic in Off Road
This is the first one I have ever seen driving down the road, there are only a half dozen in the state and I know who they are. An unknown one is a big deal around here. The rareity is cool, I get all sorts of looks and allot of questions just about every time I stop somewhere. I get the notes under the wiper asking if it is for sale and while at the body shop this week two people asked them if it was for sale. -

subarubrat replied to subarubrat's topic in Off Road
I live just down the road from Warrenton in Remington, but I am in Warrenton a few times a week usually. Sometimes in the BRAT and sometimes in the Impreza. Have you seen that ultra clean near stock black BRAT that this old man drives? I see it in Warrenton but he never waves back or anything. I want to get a pic parked next to his (or any stock BRAT) but there are NONE around.
