howdy fellow subaru lovers
Ratty2Austin replied to Heather Cook's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if you drove the car with the heater on, and it did not overheat, that is the indicator that your radiator is not dispursing enough heat.. (the heater core is taking up the slack that the radiator cant handle..) replace the radiator with a new one, or preferably a 2 row from a turbo wagon (better cooling) for hot weather, some people like using 185 deg, or 165 deg thermostats (stock=195) to make it run slightly cooler.. and also make sure you are running coolant, and not plain water- the waters boiling temp is ~212º water+coolant is around 245 or more? (see the containter for the temp) but either way.. water wont work in most cases, it boils too low, and creates steam wich can blow HGs (it happened to me!) -
It's alive! Pics of 80 DL hatch. 56k warning!

WOW dont repaint it!! that is the best paint i have seen on a subaru, as far as color changing paint!! the only reason i never painted any of mine that color, was the paint is soooooooooooooooooooo expensive!!!! thats the most costly paint there is i belive! good job on fixin it! hope you have fun! -
probable departure date set now.. July 1st!!! a friday, we should be all heading out on the road towards MN... caravan so far- Me, in the impreza (or the bike if I cant get a trailer, which means second driver needed if no trailer either) Sparkster- in the wagon he is trying to buy? my Brat, if not sold.. will be carrying the bike and I would need a driver for the imp. I wonder how much time i should get between my last planned day of work and the time that I leave? no days? 1 to 3 days? a week? how much time does it take to load a couple cars, a trailer, and pack boxes?

heh... i pegged the speedo in that same yellow wagon, when it had the EA81 in it... with slightly smaller tires (like.. 25.5 inch) the sad thing is, i topped out the impreza wagon, at about 95 or so too...
-
well, when i was driving the EJ22 lifted '80 wagon, with the 27" bfg all terrains, i think i got it up to about 100 actual speed.. (speedo was pegged at 85)

paint ideas for Hass's XT (Dave)
Ratty2Austin replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
[napolean dynomite]gosh! you guys are ruining my life![/napolean dynomite] one color is too borning.. besides, he bought the yellow and blue so he could do something cool with it on his XT.. it would be bad to just not use the paint at all.. :-p -
oh yaa, dont worry! I love washington too much to just leave perminately.. I am just going out on my adventure/school and such.. then I will be back! besides, I will probably be here to "visit" each summer if I can afford it... (and to get my stuff too!!) an evans meet sounds good! as long as I dont break my impreza too much

aiming for the Minneapolis area, will be searching for a job, and a place to live for one year before moving again to wherever... move out date not set yet, hoping for the first week in july.. (i think this will make me miss the subaru show!! ) so I need to finish clearing house.. got lots of parts still to ... give away... tools to sell, toys and computers too... moving sale will be soon, but always here too if you want to stop in and see what i need to liquidate! I will be looking for a hitch for the impreza, and a small util trailer, one large enough to haul my motorcycle, and some large tool boxes, and my junk.. (lots of small boxes) anyone got one to sell? any soob guys in MN need a room mate to share rent? know of any places hiring? it would help me out a lot if there is! thanks a bunch ahead of time

playing around with some prismacolor colred pencils last night to make the rough ideas, then finalizing with Freehand (vectoring art program) came up with this idea for a paint job, using the colors of paint Dave has already in hand.. (yellow, blue, black) using real automotive enamels of course.. what do ya think? too "ricey" or does it work for the XT.... (ignore the dirty white, it was an old picture, and we have white paint to fix those parts too.. there will probably be black trim striping outlining the colors as well, decided of course, after he paints the colors on...

injector resistor pack loacation?
Ratty2Austin replied to dneufeld's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
check near the coil, or behind the air filter box on the (RF) strut tower... thats where I would look first... other than that, i am not entirely sure, as I didnt know there was a resistor for the injectors! but I remember seeing a resistor pack there when i stripped a couple cars -
Clutch glitch in EJ22 swap - HELP!
Ratty2Austin replied to cracked head's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that sounds like it could be the only thing, is the 2wd shaft a different diameter? I had the John/EJ swap kit, and it fit fine in my 80 gl wagon, and I had a N/A 5spd 4wd D/R tranny in there... time to add 4wd!! -
those axle angles dont look too bad to me, besides, EA rear axles are dual-DOJ action! more flex ability! my impreza's rears are more angled than that! take a look at my pics and see what i mean (well, when i get a shot of the diff)
-
torq sounds about right... the advertised peak HP rating for the old subarus, EA81 and EA82, was usually at like... 5200 rpms.. (like when advertised by subaru) anyone run a dyno on a stock EA81?
-
wont that get kinda cold in the winter in your neighborhood?
-
Dooooooode!!!! Sweeeeeeeet!!! how come nobody has mentioned a lift, much less one from way back when? and for gen1s? and those wheels look familiar.. someone on here has those.. but who i wonder?

5spd tranny swap BIG PROBLEMS!! revised!
Ratty2Austin replied to richieroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
couple things to check.. gear oil? tranny ratio (front diff/rear diff) the same? was the tranny out of a known drivable car? is it a FT 4wd? or part time 4wd? sounds like you have a broken tranny.. if not then something is seriously binding up bad.. or do you have severly broken front axles? -
I am preparing to move out into the world on my own.. (well, sorta on my own, but either way, paying rent is soon to come) and I feel like I cant afford to keep both cars and my motorcycle.. so I am faced with a decision.... keep one car and the bike... but wich car? keep the brat? its cute, its a brat, its origional, its nice.. and it has the truck functions (makes moving easy, and transporting things like the bike..) but.. its a 2 seater, and the radio is still the orig. tape/am/fm by subaur.. not that bumpin, like the impreza has... I could sell the brat and keep the $ in the bank to help me move, but i could do the same with the imp... the other thing that I am not too fond of, the brat is carbed.. the imp is a very nice EJ18... if i keep the impreza, i will miss the brattyness of the brat, but I will have a wagon, an offroader, but slightly beat up and more common to see.. which also makes finding parts easier/cheaper.. but I could always get another imp later or better.. but resale in current shape compared to the brat, is there interest in buying a pimped out lifted impreza over the brat? I really wouldnt mind keeping either car or both.... but one really needs to go to help me keep my finances manageable (I cant really afford, or dont want to afford putting both on insurance at the same time either) any ideas on what would be most practical to keep as a one-car driver? and if it matters, the impreza does not have AC, and the brat does.. and I will be living in MN or WI soon.. and possibilites of visiting grandmother in AZ too... any interest in one of these wonderful machines? I may just drag them with me till i can figure it out later! I can use the brat as a trailer behind the impreza right?

oe part number help
Ratty2Austin replied to elcaminokurt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
there is probably only 3 left in the whole country, as I ordered 2 of the 5 that were there about a month ago... and just to verify, the PN on the package is 791047190 (this is the trim assembly, which is the chrome trim, screws and plastic retainers for the screws all in one bag!) good luck! and if your parts dept at subaru cant find it in the subaru inventory, its under 1800/1600 (83-84)----> body parts ---> rear gate (MPV) I think thats what its under.. -
wooohoo! made it home alive!!! the impreza is getting better gas milage now too! but the check engine/idle issue is not better... hmmmm :-\ calculated milage on most of the tanks coming back- 28 to 31mpg!! that includes the 85 octane gas in MT, with a constant speed of 65-75mph one bird bounced off the wagon @75mph, little tiny thing- I think it cracked the lense on the already-broken marker light.... and i got a rock chip in my new windshield! (stooopid sand trucks) good thing I had those snow tires on there (thanks Zap) i ran into some nice glare ice early in the morning on my way thru eastern MT.. also at about 70mph! some select pictures from the trip can be see in the gallery http://usmb.net/gallery/album137

Hello AUSTIN...
Ratty2Austin replied to sparkster58's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I'm home now!!!! woooo!! more details after I sleep.. i am tired!!! for now.. impreza got 31mpg tops on most of the trip (when it was not raining, worse gas milage in the mtns, and when it was wet/icey) no problems except the CEL coming on when sitting at idle too long... went away when driving though... -
thanks for the help guys, this is my last post till after I get to MN or get home from MN! look for the lifted impreza along I-90/I-94!! what worries me... my check engine light came on today, while driving.. I am having issues with my idle system... code 24 came up I think while I am running on the freeway, I will be adding some fuel additives to clean it out a lil bit... hope it works! but matt gave me his spare! so I am covered there (and I got a portable E-tire pump)

Drain Plug Tool or Just Ratchet?
Ratty2Austin replied to Turtle's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the special tool of choice by official Subaru mecanics at the dealer, is .... 1/2 drive snap-on breaker bar! (typically the 2 foot long bar) (i prefer craftsmen myself) yes, the 1/2 impact gun works well too.. in tight spaces especially
