  1. if you have a hitachi carb, check the big hex bolt thingy sticking off the front of the top of the carb (with a black wire coming out of it) it shuts off the fuel/air (?) supply when you turn off the ignition.. if it goes bad, your car will either, not run at all.. (if the wire breaks) or.. it will desiel (if its broke internally) at least thats what I can remember that thingy doing for the engine.. worth a check!
  2. if your talking about the one that resides directly under your seat area.. that should be the resonator... you probably could get away with removing it and replacing it with pipe.. check with your local smog/inspection laws before doing it just to be safe.. some areas are anal about removing stupid things like that.. should make it sound "beefier" too without it..
  3. I take it this is your first subaru, and you had some sort of "impossible to fix" american made car, prior to it? I know the feeling.. i bought a BMW once... it was nice, and fun to drive.. but when I went to go do regular maintenence on it, and fix a few "minor" things.. I ended up trading it UP for a impreza L and I wont go back.. not to mention, every time i work on "another" kind of car.. it just pisses me off and makes me love subarus simplicity more and more! welcome to the USMB!
  4. my (former) 1980 yellow wagon got a consistant 21mpg with the 2.2 D/R conversion and 27" BFG tires.. when I was traveling to MN from WA non stop.. uphill/downhill..sub-freezing temps, and about 70-90mph constant speed (where applicable :-p ) my 5spd impreza 1.8, recently got about 20-25 mpg mixed... but its a 1.8! my last impreza with the 1.8 and the AWD AT got 31 on the highway??? hmm... i just cleaned my IAC valve, PCV and TB... so we will see this week if it helpes!
  5. hehe sounds like a good plan.. the xt can tow it.. as for saturday, i will probably be out and about, i dont think i can take too long for a meet/greet.. but i could stop by and say hi.. my mission for that day is to look around and get ideas on apartments/shared rent w/roommates/etc and jobs for that area- (planning to move fairly soon if you missed that thread) so if you let me know when/where i could see about stopping in on my way thru!
  6. i am just curious.. and I know everyone is different when it comes to this.. but what kind of foods/snacks/energy drinks should i have or are good/cheap/effective for long hauls like this? or for that matter, good safe places to stop and take a nap without being bothered by the fuzz? (last time i stopped in MT at a rest stop, they were sitting behind the car and woke me up.. they left very slowly when they saw me move!) I expect to be somewhere in western montana by late night/morning (nap time needed) probably only stopping for about a couple hours.. (like, 2 or 3 hours nap) daylight helps keep me awake luckly and the spare tire thing.. 50 seems too high.. i think i will see about grabbing one from work in the "used wheel and tire pile"
  7. on wednesday, the 11th.. I depart the Seattle area in route to Minneapolis... planning to arrive either late thursday night (in the midnight hours) or friday morning sometime... so its going to be a long haul in the impreza on my own.. hoping for no issues.. I got the alignment done, oil changed (and the belts and stuff is good too) and I am going to carry tools as always, however, no spare tire.. and only the stock scissor jack and no idea where the crank handle is.. but not expecting any issues.. afterall ... its highway driving all the way! any ideas on the weather conditions thru the mountain areas? i have snow tires on the car, but this trip was origionally planned for the motorcycle, so I am just curious as what to expect... also, if anyone wants to meet up along the way, i could be down for a quick stop at a gas station off the main freeway- come see the impreza! othewise, im off and runnin on wednesday!
  8. the best fix for this prob.... 5MT conversion! that and only that will be your sure way to keep it from breaking again... the subaru 4eat is garbage.. IMO I would take it to a dealer.. dealer depending of course.. as long as its a subaru-only dealer, they would know for sure whats wrong.. at least from what I have seen.. dealers vrs independant shops.. but that is also my opinion... if your up for the work yourself, you could swap out the tranny with a J/Y tranny (from a low milage wrecked car) it is usually cheaper than the reman route.. good luck with it...
  9. it can be done.. and the turbos could be done too.. you just couldnt mount them in the "normal" locations.. but if you could put them under the motor, or above it.. but yeah.. the EJ22, either single turbo or twin.. would be lots of fun too.. you have a 92 brumby? I have an 87, which was the last year imported to the US for the brats... are the 90's brumbys different much than the older ones? or did they just keep making them the same? (pictures? pictures are cool!)
  10. on nasioc, there is a thread about someone doing a EG33TT WRX swap on an 03 wrx!!! probably around 600hp?
  11. yeah.. waaaaayyy different.. BUT... you can (with mods) put the whole EJ22 (or other EJ engines) into an EA car.. makes for a better result too! my first conversion car worked quite well. noah has it now-
  12. I dont remember the name of the owner.. (sorry) but i remember the car.. it is the lifted hatch-brat (black one, with the chopped top) you came on the evans creek trip back in 10/17/04! parked outside of the carwash place off the second exit... i was up making a delivery to a body shop on 2nd... if i had more time, i would have stopped in.. but the day was runnin out!
  13. i actually need to take mine in now too.. especially after I reinstalled ALL the emissions hardware and hoses, AND a reman'ed carb!! (should make a difference right? ) sounds like you may have gotten yours a bunch closer! good luck!
  14. your linkage is binding up and forcing it out of 4 low (underneath the shift boot, not under the car) you could bend the linkage enough to make it stop doing this.. or, once in reverse, pull the lever back up for low range...
  15. Muahahhhah!!! and I have 2 in my garage UNOPENED OEM NOS!!!! BTW, there are only ****3**** left in the US in stock with subaru dealers... at least last time i checked...
  16. I agree!!! its a trade off though, there are more wires to deal with on the EJ engines, and more hoses on the EAs! but wires dont go bad or leak as easily... usually... and they are more colorful!!
  17. yep! it keeps things out... like wrenches, bolts, fingers, small animals the metal objects that could fit down there could cause big problems if they get stuck in there.. like if a wrench gets lodged in there at the wrong spot.. your engine may have problems spinning! if it stays on there, keep it on there till you need it off! if its crusty and likes to pop off on its own, then dont worry about keeping it
  18. the sound your hearing is the turbo bearing worn out, and the shaft is loose in the bearing.. its ocillating when it hits a certain speed (turbine rpms) which also means you are probably dumping oil into your intake which is choaking up the motor.. take off the turbo intake plentum, and see if there is a lot of oil in there on your throttle plate and such.. replace turbo with EA82 T unit and piping is an upgrade, but you will be without a car for a while, and it also sounds like your ECU does not work properly either (Mr Carbs turbo is broken in the similar way too)
  19. $400 for 4 of them, or $400 each wheel? I dont think i saw it specified there? (or i am too tired, and missed the memo )
  20. well, i dont have it anymore.. but before i was old enough to drive (by about one year!!) my dad sold this before i was able to own a car!!! 1969/1970? sambar delux van it ran, all electronics worked.. it even drove.. barely.. needed tranny work (2nd and 3rd were frozen, could not use those gears) clutch was about gone.. and there were no break lines.. but the body and interior was niiiiice
  21. there are a few differences... 80-82 EA81 heads have smaller valves, solid lifters, and they have 2 extra bolts down below the valve covers that bolt the head to the block. (they are reallllllly small and pretty much usless.. probably were there for extra brackets or something.) 83 and 84 they changed the EA81, got rid of the little bolts, and i belive the valves were larger. still used solid lifters.. ***except*** A/T subarus had hydro lifters before '85, after 85 (Brat, and hatchback only in the US, till 87 and 89) they used hydro lifters in all EA81s and big valves (not 100% sure on the accuracy of this info- but its what I have learned over the time i have been tinkering with these very engines and reading up on them in the various shop manuals) as for brake rotors, they should be interchangeable for all EA81 modles.. you may need to keep the particular calipers+mounts with the respected rotor types (sold rotor with solid caliper parts, and such) but i have been able to swap them out for one another... (good to keep them the same for both sides of the car too!) another cool thing- rear disc breaks from all EA82 Turbo cars (4wd or 2wd) will bolt onto any EA81 rear arms.. assuming you grab all the parts from it. backing plates, caliper mounts, disc. (this replaces drums woohoo!) and you dont have to worry about proportioning valve stuff, brakes on a subaru are cross connected (RR+LF/LR+RF)
  22. thats calebs house!!! hahah ive wondered where he went off to...
  23. so here is the big question.... when/how and if... can we get some AWD D/Rs shipped to the US? put me on the list! unless.. the EA D/R setup is cheaper than the shipping+tranny? all I know, i need an LSD and a low range!
  24. yep... I belive thats what Noah is putting them on?
  25. yep! use the legacy tops for the rear, and the rest should all bolt in as is...
