Attn Portland guys
Ratty2Austin replied to GLCraig's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Patti and I will probably come on down to meet and hang out with you guys and gals again! do you have a for sure time and place now? (need an address to map out on the net cause I have got a long ways to travel out there!) and I dont want to come 300miles to find nobody can make it! -
I have an 86 turbo 4wd XT, and so far not too many problems, other than being very sensitive on the cooling... I removed the AC stuff to help simplify the engine compartment, and got it a new raidator, and the fan is running all the time and I am using dex-cool instead of green antifreeze... nothing wrong with my cooling system now.. the sunroof leaks, it drips in the car whenever its raining... really sucks up here in seattle... (but i guess all subaru sunroofs do that lol) the electronics in the car seem to be not quite as good as the older ones.. but maybe thats just mine- (and the weird shaped dash makes aftermarket stereos difficult to install) being that it has one wiper blade, it must be bought OEM at subaru... (tried to find an aftermarket blade.. they dont fit!) I think all 87.5 and up XTs have the auto retard-tract seatbelts... they usually spaz out and stop working eventually from what I have seen... air struts.... they are either good or bad... if they are in that model. thats all i can think of for the time- they are very fun to drive though!

Need a "4wd" decal from the back of an EA82
Ratty2Austin replied to syphon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I happen to know that Carter has at least one of the OEM decals in stock...(the ea82 style) I put it in its little bin when i was putting stock away.... should be around or under the $10 mark..... -
the throttle cable setup is something i have wanted to fix ever sence i put it in the car... i am not sure exactly how to do it... or at least I cant find the right parts to do it! maybe next time we meet up, i can see how you bolted yours on (and find out which hitachi setup you used and where you bolted it)
-
well, i took a few pics of my weber and it's plumbing setup... the PCV system in specific- i have seen a lot of people asking how to do it, and the pictures seem to be better than a thousand words... so heres the link to my ea81 setup! (seems to be the best setup i have found for the ea81, and maybe even for the ea82 with webers) http://usmb.net/gallery/album159 someone should add this to the USRM? hope this helps people out! the checklist of the only things you need hooked up on your engine-(and it will pass emissions this way too!) -brake booster -disty advance -defrost flapper hose (goes to firewall) -PCV hoses L and R ignition power and the usual stuff is all you need!

EA-81 runs out of breath at 3500 RPM *Fixed*
Ratty2Austin replied to subieman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
what gas are you running? I used to use arco crap in my 83 wagon, and i couldnt exceed the 3500 mark either- then i switched to real gas (texaco, cheveron, 76, etc...) and it ran fine after that- the car just couldnt handle the water in the gas! just my thought... and an easy fix! (try octane boost or some high octane gas, like 110 or something! -

More pugs for me!!!
Ratty2Austin replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sorry, i need to make my post more clear... I am keeping the alloys- however, i have a set of 390mm alloys that look exactly like the 15" alloys in the pic, that I will give away for free (have 4 of them)the tires are bald but hold air i have no extra 14 alloys the ones i am selling are the 14" steels- i have one set of the large hole ones, and a set of the funky hole ones (4ea) so i have a total of 8 wheels to sell... -

anyone have pics of the rieter pit snow run??
Ratty2Austin replied to Rooinater's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well, you know I have a lot of pics... some of hte good ones were uploaded to my album already.... -
so i just did the timing belt and reseal front of the engine on my impreza, and when i got it ready for its test run, it was all working well, untill i pulled out of the driveway and turned the wheel. when i turned the wheel, (at stop or slow speeds, thus having more stress on the P/S pump) it made a shuddering feeling/sound mostly coming from the drivers side... and it felt like the pump was stalling a little bit...?? the steering did not do this before i took the car apart, what could cause this? i checked the fluid, it seems to be normal level, and not foamy... thanks!

always loose castle nut!
Ratty2Austin replied to gmcfan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have had this happen to me a few times... why it does this- there is a cone washer, a curved washer and a castleated nut with a coter pin. the cone washer starts to wear out (from friction or something..) becase the curved washer needs to be installed one way only, if it is installed wrong, or is not the right kind of washer, it will cause the nut to back off, and wear out the cone washer. how to fix- get a new cone washer, and a new curved washer. check to make sure hub is not stripped out. grease it all up with wheel bearing grease, or anti-seize (whichever one you prefer) and install the curved washer correctly. I am not 100% sure which way the cone washer is supposed to be installed, but it should be with the convex side facing outward. then when you tighten it down, you dont need to over tighten it, but make sure you can get a nice fat cotter pin in there this should help! (seems to be a common problem) it even happened to me yesterday (same symptoms too!!!) -
Woohoo! decent day at PAP
Ratty2Austin replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, i am still here.. I have even posted a bit here and there too, but not as much as i used to... I have been dealing with my money issues, trying to bring my monthly bills down and finish some current projects- but with the coming of spring and summer, I will become more active again hopefully! there is even some planning going on with Patti and I to take a big road trip this summer/late spring hopefully- down the coast all the way to AZ, then back up the other side ofthe mountains home... but its all just a thought at this point.. -
well, for starters it was not raining nor was it even close to freezing, and I got a few goodies I collected a bunch of throttle cables (no, i am not paranoid due to previous incedence! ) got one good axle (would have had 2, but when i got the other one removed, the grease plate in the DOJ cup had come off and was bouncing around in the cup!) got a transfer case! from a samurai (shhhhh! nobody heard that!) (for sale if anyone realllly wants it- $100 delivered in western WA only) and a rare find- a windshield! from a ea81 coupe!! and patti and I were able to remove it without breaking it! (also for sale- $80, otherwise i am putting it in a brat that needs it) too bad it has one little rock chip in it the size of a dime, over near the passenger side.... anyone know where to get a good seal for cheap? or should i get lots of generic windshield glue? there are a bunch of ea81s up there right now at the lynnwood yard for anyone who is wondering-

Help me figure out this Odd Cooling Issue
Ratty2Austin replied to syphon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
doh! that happened to me... it was cheaper and easier for me to get a new intake manifold put on the XT when the thing striped out on me... if you had contacted me, i might have been able to help you get a new intake... (might have one or know where one is that would work!) anyways, I was gonna vote for a thermostat too, but I am not sure,,.... I just fixed my cooling (or lack of heating for that matter) by replacing my genuine subaru 180 deg. thermostat with a used 195deg one... and now it works nice and mid-gauge! (was running waaaaay too cold before..) and btw, I changed my thermostat and a upper heater core hose IN the snow.. (sorta had to, my car had a hose burst!) well, good luck- if you still need help with it, let me know (PAP run this weekend?) -
Oooooohhh.... cool! this makes me want to lift my wagon sooner now!! good job guys! cant wait to see it in person one of these days

is there a speed limiter on my loyale?
Ratty2Austin replied to justyfied's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
one time i had my 83 wagon up to about 95-100mph, it was a 4spd, with 4 people in it, open exaust and going downhill in the HOV lane on I-5.... flooring it! (took a while, even down hill) the car sounded and rattled like it was going to explode!! (but it didnt.. it just kept on going!) -
Made it back from Reiters Pit... barely...
Ratty2Austin replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
btw, it was still a fun trip, despite the issues... I got some of my pics uploaded.... http://usmb.net/gallery/album121 -
so I limped the wagon home, well, more like i tugged the throttle with my hand using a neon string (provided and installed by Noah and Dave) cause my throttle cable broke on me!! (and this was east of the town of Index, out in the snow!!!) but I was able to wheel it around a bit and even pull Troy's wagon out of the ditch a few times with the string around my right hand! unfortunately for Troy, he only made it a little past Monroe on HWY 522, then his motor decided it didnt like being overheated all day, so it threw a rod or something of the sorts (stoped moving)!!! (we will have pics and a diagnosis when we tear it apart) so luckily for him Connie has AAA, so his wagon rode home in style (kinda like a hurst ) my wagon for some reason decided it wanted to jam itself in 4wd, even with the lever all the way down...??? had to jack the car up and releve pressure on the drivetrain to get it back in to FWD... up in the snow was fun, got to find out how bad my tires really are, and had some fun with the tow rope and dave (we went car snow-surfing!!) I got a video clip of dave being towed by my wagon down the street on his butt!! (hillarious video) anyways, I have uploaded the pics to the usmb album on my section... go take a look!! (Qman- i will have to give you the total amount of pics on CD, there are too many to fit online)

I am trying to get an '83 ea81 with a hitachi, running by tomorrow, my neighbor wants to buy it because his saab pooped out on him and it costs too much.. anyways, I replaced the intake manifold on this one and i removed almost all the emissions/vacume stuffs... and for some reason, it is having crank case pressure issues- I think the PCV valve is one of hte probelms, (which i will take care of tomorrow...) but, to try and figure out where this oil is coming from, I connected the crank case breathers (on the valve covers) to the airbox (blue subaru one) and it seems to suck oil up from the breathers! (oil is sitting in the airbox) we tried a different thing- took the oil cap off (with the breather hoses still connected to the airbox) and reved the engine up- it sprayed all over the place out of the oil filler!!! (too much pressure!) another weird issue- with the airbox open, and engine running- poured a little trickle of water down the carb, (a good old time trick on how to clean engines out, and it does work) anyways, kept it running while pouring the water in by reving it up... seemed to suck the water down fine, but then water drops started spraying out of the passenger side valve cover breather!!! why??? how????? I dont get it!!?? could this be a blown headgasket? (not likely, considering there is no antifreeze or water in the oil, and no bubbles in the coolant) is there something in the heads that could be cloged and making the circulation of oil in the bottom end of the engine not happen? what would cause too much pressure in the crankcase?? (even with the cap off and the breather hoses opened up) even the dipstick had oil pressure issues, it started spraying out that hole when i took it out! this is sooooo frustrating! please help!! thanks!! (thanks Ed and Corky too for the advice! on the PCV valve, i checked, and it said "made in USA"... I need to find an OEM valve!)
