  1. ok, so I want to put an ea81 into my 88GL wagon... I am getting tired of this headgasket weakness, and SPFI... its not that I dont know how to work on it, but the reliablility and the ease-of-tuning is a little harder... not to mention, the EA82 thats in the car is toast.. it runs, but water is mixin' with the oil! so anyways, my question is about the motor mounts... I can do everything else about hooking up the ea81 to the ea82 tranny and fuel system, but I dont know exactly the measurments of the motormount mounting locations. when Noah88dl was trying to install his ea81 into his 88 wagon, he ran into that problem, the mounts seemed to not line up completly- but it seemed to work anyways... are they close enough? or should I worry about stressing the poor little tranny mounts (if the engine mounts line up when the tranny is pushed back a little, it would be continuously stressing the mounts on the tranny and the engine!) and then also, seince this is an SPFI car, the fuel pump needs to be rewired, or should I just bypass the undercar pump, and install an underhood pump with a return line? (for a weber carb) and I am assuming a ea81 ignition coil needs only batt. power and a signal generated by the disty to generate the needed HV pulse? thanks for any info! some of this I can figure out, but I need a second opinion! Austin
  2. EA81 - 1800cc OHV - carbed or turbo EA71 - 1600cc OHV - carbed EA82 - 1800cc OHC - carbed, spfi, mpfi or turbo ER27 - 2700cc OHC 6cyl - mpfi - XT6 EG33 - 3300cc OHC 6cyl - mpfi - SVX EJ30 - 3000cc OHC 6cyl - mpfi used in outback H6 3.0 EJ16 - 1600cc OHC - mpfi (used in UK? impreza L) EJ18 - 1800cc OHC - mpfi (impreza L) EJ20 - 2000cc OHC or DOHC mpfi or turbo (wrx) EJ22 - 2200cc OHC (DOHC only in 22B impreza) Legacys and imprezas EJ25 - 2500cc OHC or DOHC (only turbo in STi) 2.5rs, and most new 'roos there are also earlier motors (like EA61 or EA 42 or something like that, used in early 70s and 60s modles) but I am not sure about what they were... and from what I have seen/heard, the trannys are cross compatible between certain modles with minor or no mods.. (bolt on mostly) with these modles- EA81, EA82 and ER27 trannys will interchange (depending on which clutch and flywheel is used) EJ18,EJ20,EJ22,EJ25,EJ30,EG33 trannys should interchange, but with some modles (like the WRX or STi), the clutch setup is sometimes different- the turbo's used a Hydraulic clutch when the non-turbo's used a cable driven clutch. and some of the ones listed above might not be completely accurate.. but thats what I have seen so far! add that to your "subaru lingo" database
  3. so i have been collecting most of the things I need for my ea81 + d/r conversion for my '80 GL1600 wagon... so far I have gotten the tranny, the clutch stuff, and the longblock in the car. now its time for the intake and weber, and keeping all the emissions stuff out! one problem I have run into (besides bow-wow closing a minute before I pulled up to buy my weber, and they wont be open till tuesday!) is the metal hose things that come off teh exaust, and I cant unbolt them with the tools I have- the bolts are too rusty (i will probably strip them, or round them off) so I cant remove them that way... I was thinking about cutting the pipe, and smushing it flat, or stuffing a piece of scrap steel into it, and welding it shut! anyways, I am going to see if I can post a pic here- (a pic test)
  4. I have a turbo XT, and a 88 GL wagon, and it seems that both of them have single rows, and the XT gets hot, but stays below overheating (just barley, with the heat on full blast) and the wagon killed itself due to a clogged single row!... where is a good place to get reman/new or good used dual rows?? anyone know? this swap sounds like a good plan! or maybe will a legacy (1990) aluminum radiator fit in the wagon? ive got a spare!! Austin
  5. have you ever removed the GL wheel caps? if you didnt know... all the subarus pre-legacy use a 4x140 bolt pattern... so your choices of wheels are very limited... unless you do the 5 lug conversion! (some of these guys have done this here... look for the posts on how to do it!) and also fyi, the legacy and impreza and XT6 use 5x100 bolt pattern.. and the only other wheels that use the 4x140 lugs are peugot (spelling?) wheels-available in 14" and 15",and 390mm (dont get the metrics!) good luck! Austin
  6. if those are the "new" ones Schucks carried for a short time, then I have tried them out... I bought one and used it for less than a week till it completely destroyed itself, when I was trying to turn my car around the DOJ came apart, and the axle came apart and fell out of the cup!!! so I took it back and got a re-man.. which lasted untill ... probably still, I dont think it has broken yet (you would have to ask the guy that has it now!! ) i wouldnt waste my money on those again.. but thats just me! Austin
  7. I am actually going to pick up a weber for my 80 GL wagon, and a 86 Brat, and the "correct" one is the DGAV (or is it DGEV) 32/36 its the one with the electric choke (I am actually going to make it manual if I can!) at least thats the one the majority of subaru users have! good luck! and you will also need an adaptor plate for an ea81 Austin
  8. I should know this... I just rebuilt an ea82 a week ago...~! the crank position should be so that all 4 pistons are at their center point (normally where the center of the 3 notches on the flywheel is marked) and then the non-disty cam (pass/right side) pully's timing mark is aligned with the mark pointing straight up, and the other side (drivers/left) with the disty is pointing down... (definate yes on the timing marks on the cams being opposite when lined up properly, the haynes manual (showing them to be both up) is wrong) I have done this now about 2 or 3 times within this year... and I have also just done a EJ22 timing belt! (I am getting better at it each time!!) good luck with your (whatever project it may be, sounds like a VW conversion?) ! Austin
  9. as long as I am not under the car (when am I not?) I would like to come join in on the fun, meet and greet, maybe share pics and vids.. (the mobile video machine!) so anyways, someone give me a call if you guys figure out a meeting time and place! (if I dont post after its been figured out that is) thanks!! Austin
  10. well, i know the timing belts are correct, cause it does run good sometimes, and revs up like its supposed to... but, there are 2 wires up there in the corner, but they are not green.... in fact, they dont even match in color, but they do plug into eachother, and when they are unplugged, the car runs worse.... so right now they are left plugged in! i am not sure what to think about that one! its messed up i think!
  11. ok, so I am working on this 86 SPFI GL-10 sedan for someone, I have already lapped the valves in, and put new head gaskets and new timing belts on the thing... but when I put it all back together (it had to be repaired because it overheated and craked a head, and the valve seat came out of the head!) and now it runs, but it is hard to start, and it also sputters and stalls easily, and it also idles high sometimes... it has very odd, and intermittent problems, but the guy wants it to run good before I return it to him... anybody in the area a SPFI expert? I also have been having trouble setting the timing, I have a gun, but not sure if it is working properly, or if the engine is giving erratic responce... but anyways, I would like to get this car done, but cant seem to figure out whats causing it to run weird! !!! Austin
  12. so I pulled the tranny out of the car (the ea71 4spd s/r) and some of the things are different... so I will need a shift lever set (the 4wd selector lever, the half thats under the car, and maybe the shift lever too... (with a rubber boot, cause I cant seem to get this one off the lever!) but anyways... the ea71 axles work on the ea81 tranny right? (its an ea81 body) and I am not sure what yearr the tranny is out of... I think its newer than 84... (out of a hatchback 4wd)
  13. dude! so did anyone take any major damage? any big trucks humiliated? or do we have to wait and see the videos!?? Austin
  14. I have the weber "techbook", by haynes... it covers most models of webers, SU, and other carbs... unfortunately, I am not selling it, cause I will have a weber on my car shortly, and I will need it for setting up the new jets and such, but if you want to get a new one- I got mine from Bow-Wow, (where you can also get webers, accessories and adaptor plates for subarus, VWs and such..) I dont know if there is one in your area, but if there is, its worth a shot! or if not, would you like someone to ship you a copy? (go get another from the store and send it)
  15. I am installing a ea81 with a 4 spd d/r (from an ea81 hatch) into a 1980 ea71 wagon... I need to know which parts are compatible.... I was hoping to use the disty, and the coil and ignition stuff... (thats on the car) I am planning to put a weber on it, and eliminate all the emissions crap! I also need to get a ea81 clutch cable (the one on the car is for the goofy ea71 center-mount-starter tranny) and also a good ea81 flywheel, preferably the large diameter one so I can get the beefy clutch! I was also wondering what othe parts are compatible, cause if things like the H2O pump and mounts and stuff are compatible, I was going to save them for spare parts! thanks! Austin 80 GL1600 wagon 94 impreza L (F/S) 86 XT turbo (F/S) 91 Legacy LS wagon (moms) 86 Brat (sold, delivery soon) 88 GL wagon (needs headgaskets) and I still need to get a lift kit! (is PK on the rubicon?)
  16. I think its worth about 200-500 dollars, depending on if it runs and drives.. the reason its not worth more, is that its kinda crusty lookin, and its an AT.. Matt got his 83 turbo wagon (bad AT tranny, but perfect body) for very cheap (less than above mentioned i think) it looks pretty decent though.. a good fixer upper! Austin
  17. Woohooo!!! it runs!!! and it runs Better than it did!!!!! thanks for the help guys! Austin
  18. one of the problems I had last night, is when I was dissasembeling it, I was actually replacing the water pump (it seized) and doing the new belt at the same time... but when I took the tensioner off, it made the belt loose, and misaligned it. so then I couldnt look at how it was (it did run) to compare to, and remember the belt alignment! another qucik question- on the crank sprocket, there is a little key thing (keeps sprocket aligned on shaft) and it seems to be worn out! how do you change this? or is it changeable? or should I not worry? (it seems to affect the crank alignment with the T belt!) thanks
  19. and sorry about not being specific... it is a SOHC EJ22, in a 1991 LS Legacy wagon, AT AWD.... and I know it is a clearance engine, ifit wasn't , I wouldnt have tryed starting it without being sure it was correct! but anyways, thats the thing I was wondering (mattski) said there is different marks on the crank sproket- so I use the one on the plate behind the sprocket, and not the arrow on the front of the sproket? i think what happened, is that I aligned the timing marks on the cams and the arrow on the crank sprocket all pointing up (to the marks on the block/covers) and thats what made them misaligned.... Corky- are you going to email me a jpg image of that page? please remember to send it to my ratty2austin@yahoo.com email... thanks! Austin
  20. arrrrgg!! its soo frustrating! I put the car all back together, and before filling it with coolant, I though to myself, "I should try to start the car to see if the timing is right..." go figures it was not correct.. the car turned over, and made funny sounds, and did not fire... so I took it all back apart and realised there a a couple different marks on the cam pulleys and the crank gear... so which marks do I align up top? so far I have tried the 2 little tick markes "up" on the cams, and the arrow on the crank gear (center tbelt pully) up as well.. but then I noticed that there was also a different mark on the crank pully... which timing mark do I use!!!??? Should we maybe put this info (with pics) into the USRM for T belt replacement on EJ and EA motors.... cause the haynes manual has the wrong timing info for ea82! so I dont want to trust it with the EJ22!! I need to get this car back on the road asap!! (moms car! and she needs it for work!) thanks Austin
  21. My mom called me from the UW parking lot... she turned it off as soon as she saw the temp gage go red! hopefully that was soon enough... so when I got there, she started the car up, and it sounded mostly normal... (it also stopped making the evil noise it was making before, which I had assumed was the water pump bearing...) so my guess is that the waterpump was making noise before, due to a bent fin? or something? and now it broke, and is no longer turning the impeller? or maybe it seized, and is no longer spinning (hense the no noise again)??? cause either way, the car overheated, even though the fans work, the radiator is not cloged (worked perfectly 5 mins before the pump died) and there is still coolant in the rad. too.. (still full besides what steamed over ) but now, i guess its 2.2 disection time! it needs to be fixed tonight! (mom needs car to go to work) any speedy tips or tricks to changing the Tbelt and H20 pump? should I go to a slightly lower temp thermostat or leave it the same? thanks for any info! Austin <--- I knew I should have changed the pump sooner! Do'h!
  22. so has anyone else put legacy seats (from a 90 L wagon, very nice blue velour-i think?- seats) in a brat!?? my friend dave and I have got one mounted in... workin on the pass. side! I will post pics whenever I can find out who has a digi camera i can use! Austin
