UN-STICKY : East Coast Meet 10/25/03

party on smiths less than 48 hrs -
oh no - maybe yours isnt a REAL RX!!!!!! hurry and check the VIN before the USMB gods banish your car to "wannabe" status. its a goddamn conspiracy! jay, they didnt ONLY come with hubcaps... actually you could get them with whatever wheels you wanted to at the time, the white hubcaps that everybody associates them with were just specific to the car. the also made a gray version of that hubcap that appeared on some XTs and others...ive seen RXs with H alloys, the wheels you mentioned and others.

ATK Engine reviews please
Dennis ex24 replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ATK is what places like pepboys and autozone use from what i know and from experiences working for both those companies...they paid about $2500 for that motor, probably even more to have it installed. places like that usually dyno test everything so you might have lucked out. score -
Turbo performance mods (87 GL wagon)
Dennis ex24 replied to a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
as far as i know, there is no turbo out there that will bolt in to the EA82T piping except the stock one and the EA81 unit. that celica turbo should be an awesome upgrade, those cars made 190hp on stock boost... if one were to come up with a plan to get it on say, a 2500lb 1985 RX blowing 14lbs of boost with a catless downpipe and an I/C...hmmm. another idea would be to find a TD04L from a WRX on iclub and a cheap downpipe - people are always selling stuff cheap when it becomes obsolete - these parts will fit with a little bending and negotiating with a pry bar -
Turbo performance mods (87 GL wagon)
Dennis ex24 replied to a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
kevin... the 1987 and above cars utilized a different MAF and boost control system. in these you have to bypass the system using an electronic device to "fool" the ECU in to thinking that your only boosting at 7-8PSI. on the car youre looking at (the RX, check youre email by the way) its as simple as disconnecting a vacuum line and installing a boost controller on another line - 14PSI could be had in under 15 minutes of work... -
RX making a scary sound...
Dennis ex24 replied to 88rxsedan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
could be a rod though not very likely... timing belts will also give off a faint, audible tap and EA82s were also known to have piston slap. i wouldnt worry about it - subaru has always made noisy engines and most of the time the noises you hear are normal -
EA82T guys - oil and coolant usage thread
Dennis ex24 replied to Dennis ex24's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well after talking to SOA techs, its determined that its a normal condition. especially in the turbo motors because all EA82s (T's or not) have essentially the same cooling system and with the addition of a turbocharger and more cooling lines - this only puts more of a strain on the system. my oil usage may have been exaggerated in my intial post - i probably use about a half quart between changes but this last month i did 3k alone after driving all over the damn state for work and all. keith - my XT uses more gas then your STi, lets have a race to see who can burn off 15 gallons faster. -

what section of the shaft? you can remove the length of the shaft that goes from the center bearing into the rear and leave the front section in. -
sorry for leaving that out... the legacy unit wont work with the exsisting up pipe either. best bet is to go custom all the way, or like i said - buy a $50 downpipe from somebody on iclub. finding these turbos are kinda tough on my side of the country - i totally lucked out with mine, but believe me - its all totally worth the aggravation of searching yards and all. ive had 4 cars with ea82ts and none of them moved quite like this one does at higher boost levels...i think its the first step someone should take when aiming for 200+hp with an EA series engine. the only other bit of advice i have is to make sure your cooling system is up to par because its huge temptation to stomp on the throttle and rev to 5 grand.

EA82T guys - oil and coolant usage thread
Dennis ex24 replied to Dennis ex24's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
nobody else has an ea82t? -
well, right now my boost is all high end because of a malfunctioning wastegate, no boost controller, and an uppipe gasket going out...the bad wastegate only allows for an inconsistent 15psi however there are mods to side step this and bring boost on quicker. the car is far from finished from this aspect though one word of warning is that using this turbo poses an issue for the exhaust system - it wont bolt up to your exsisting downpipe. you would either have to go custom or use one from a newer WRX. my XT has a 3 pipe WRX system fitted, but its a tight squeeze and sits a bit lower then id like...id go custom or buy a cheap catless downpipe off of iclub and have meineke build you the rest. on the positive side - the legacy unit is worth all the work it takes to get it to fit and you'd have the fastest ea81t around. as it sits right now, i can smoke all 4s with a semi-light clutch dump while using the big 15 inch impreza wheels...ah, not that i do that. alot.

EA82T guys - oil and coolant usage thread
Dennis ex24 replied to Dennis ex24's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
nope...this is on every single car with an ea82t ive owned, not just some newly discovered thing, and ive never overheated a single one. i can boost at 14psi all day long and the temp guage wont go over halfway unless im doing 90 in 4th...very doubtful that anything serious is going on. also - this is all mostly highway/high speed driving -
so the XT i own is the 4th car ive had with an EA82T... i wanted to know if you guys would elaborate on your cars' oil and coolant usage habits. it seems to me that im always adding a few cup fulls of antifreeze in between oil changes...i generally fill the over flow bottle twice between oil changes, and this on every one ive owned or worked on. oil is another story too. the engine in my XT has roughly 10k on it since a complete teardown to the crank for a rebuild...it doesnt leak a drop but will still use about a quart of 20w50 between oil changes any pertinent info or opinions from the experts?

yeah - you could boost more then 14PSI, but im speaking in terms of reliability. were dealing with engines that are prone to eating head gaskets and cracking heads on a stock 7-8lbs of boost, why aggravate the situation? the stock compression ratio would obviously allow for higher boosting levels, but its not just about putting a boost controller on an engine and cranking it to 20PSI, theres much more that goes into it - which brings us to carfreaks initial question. also the stock turbo is plain garbage from a tuning stand point - after 14PSI it makes more noise then power, so anyone who expects to run vtechs and mustangs off the road needs to come up with a different unit. the best bet is to find a larger turbo that is capable of force feeding the engine at a faster rate. lets face it - these engines were never designed to win any races...its up to the driver to come up with good methods of performance improvement. ive boosted my stock RX for fun, but the stock turbo on it at 13PSI is nothing like the legacy unit on my XT at 13PSI ya heard?
-
kevin (myxalplyx) was the injector pioneer you speak of and if im right, there was no drastic flow rate increase found while testing these injectors... i think i do remember him saying that there was a rumor that injectors from an RX7 and XT6 maybe the same - but they were different beasts. for a while a few years ago, there were guys on iclub swapping in XT6 injectors because they "heard" of flow rate gains. the search continues...but why would you want bigger injectors? itd be a tuning nitemare and our units dont begin to lean until 14+ PSI, id be afraid to boost anymore then that on any EA series engine.

boosting at an inconsistent 15psi (between 13 and 15) due to a mafunctioning wastegate and no boost controller yet 2.2L turbocharger intercooler bypass valve k and n wrx exhaust - no muffler spider intake xt6 clutch and lightened flywheel go eagles EDIT: see my post below -
