Best year for EA82T chassis?
Dennis ex24 replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if you are out on the west coast go buy an 85-86 car... they are easier to mod and everything that everybody stated above (LSD, nicer interior) could be transplanted in to it. -
well... we got the car out of the shop on friday afternoon about 4pm. and by sunday i was tearing into it again. the intercooler plumbing was shot and needed to be replaced, so i made a trip to home depot and all is well after i replaced the intake pipe to turbo hose and the IC to turbo hose. i have roughly 300 miles on this engine and its doing very well, pulling like hell at low boost and running very very strong. im not sure where the engine came from, it was sitting here at work and somebody tossed it my way when we found out the old bored block was junk...seems to be doing fine though. gas milage already made a huge jump from roughly 200mi to a tank to 250 which was after the first fill up during the break in period.

ER27 to EA82 clutch interchange?!
Dennis ex24 replied to Adam N.D.J.'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes sir...at least spline count for sure but there was no 2WD 5spd XT6...all 2WD models had 4EA's in them. -
found this at a used dealer near my house...thinking about it for the fam. this one is that light green/almost teal color...not really my first choice but i think its a pretty good deal and imprezas are never in an abundance around here. it has 127K, new tires, runs/drives well, and has no body issues except for a slight crease in the right front fender. the guy wanted $2300 for it, i got him down to $2Gs with out trying (drove in with an 04 imp - company car, he noticed)...i was thinking of showing up with $1800 cash and seeing if he goes after it. what do you guys think?

thanx for reading guys, i appreciate the info/comments too... steve - yeah, that bracket would help big time, mind grabbing it for me? let me know what itll cost and all that. austin - regarding the belt, thanx for the tip. i kinda thought that there would be enough adjustment in the alt to use the same belt, cool to know that somebody has done this. and the mods so far look like this: Legacy turbo charger K and N cone filter WRX stock exhaust full XT6 suspension, brakes and 5 lugs with KYBs in the back Volvo By Pass Valve Turbo XS boost controller Ford intercooler short shifter 3.70 rear LSD and RX trans XT6 clutch and lightened flywheel while the car was apart, we got a chance to sort out pretty much all of its ailments so im pretty excited to fire it up as it hasnt run in about a month...ill keep updating this thread and bumping it up when i have more info to post. what a pain in the rump roast this thing has been...

ok...some news if anyone cares to read, today we got the engine back together at work...matter of fact the intake manifold was just bolted on an hour or so ago. the engine now is a stock EA82T block with no overbore like last time...im beginning to wonder if the larger displacement in the combustion chamber may have caused the car to ping at high boost levels. timing was always a goddamn battle with this car. while the engine was out, me and a friend removed all air conditioning and cruise control associated paraphenalia from the engine bay. also a few useless brackets and other stuff...looks way cleaner with less unnecessary BS all over the place. biggest problem i forsee now is finding a belt to take up for the missing AC compressor. the alt. bracket may or maynot have enough space to cover the adjustment ill post any results as they come.

it will bolt in to the cross over... youll need a WRX or legacy turbo downpipe for the other side. if you use a WRX pipe, youll have to ream one of the bolt holes on the flange a bit. if i remember right its the bolt hole at 4 oclock on the outlet side of the turbine. good luck man...

i have the legacy unit on my car...been told its a VF11 that came on the 91-94? USDM legacy turbos. it flows way more than the stock sorry excuse for a turbo...the extent of it however has yet to be seen because the thing never really ran right, hopefully that will change by the end of the week. what ive seen so far has been quite impressive, big power increase, more torque, and way more top end...will only get better once the car is tuned. the mitsu TD05 tex is talking about is a 16G turbocharger found on 93-97 jap spec STIs, and are pretty tough to come by, the ones found on USDM mitsubishis are very different in terms of flanges and bolting it on. the ones we would use can be located on ebay once in a while but are usually priced sky high. also, some mods will be necessary for the coolant pipes. ive heard from people on the legacy central forums that this turbo doesnt produce any better than the VF11 until about 16PSI...and riding around daily with that kind of boost in our cars is crazy, wouldnt be bad on race gas though. id find a legacy turbo and buy some cheap aftermarket WRX exhaust system off of iclub or ebay...at 15PSI, a full turbo-back and an intercooler, youll probably be touching in on 190-200hp at the crank. as far as injectors, im clueless...

dj can i email you sometime? id like to talk about some things...can you provide an email address?

sometimes they still run when they do that have seen them fire a rod through the power steering pump and run on 3 cylinders, makes some interesting noises.

i have never heard of anyone actually having to clean the lifters goto autozone, pepboys or whatever supermarket auto parts place you have out there and drop $200 on a new oil pump, water pump and timing belts...this is a 2-3 hour job to someone who has some wrench turning experience. when you put the engine back together it will tick for 5 minutes then never come back...its easier to replace the pump rather than service it, and sometimes the shaft on the pump is scored and its not worth the trouble anyway. -
kevin... the car is in the shop getting a new shortblock. a previous owner helicoiled the threads for the headbolts and they werent holding proper torque. it eventually blew a headgasket and most of the headbolts came out stripped...should be done next week. andrew... yeah it is a rare car. even rarer now after all the work has been done to it. why would i want to buy another one? especially a GL or DL? this one is rust free and looks great...the EA82T just isnt much of a contender, some of the fat has to go on the car to make up for its lack of balls...the car has to be able to be driven semi-daily, so the dash is staying.

intercooler and blow-off valve/ bypass valve setups
Dennis ex24 replied to suba's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i have a thunderbird IC on my XT... word on the street is that they are supposed to be some of the most effecient stock ICs out there, however im not sure its the best fit. the IC to turbo pipe goes of to a slight angle on the IC, while the turbo that is on my car (a legacy unit) goes straight up...this makes for an offset when you try to join them with plumbing - i may not be reaching the cars full potential HP wise because of the way the 2 pipes meet. also on my car is a volvo bypass valve and a turbo XS manual boost controller, you can go in my profile and click on the link to check it out. -

auto tranny question
Dennis ex24 replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
vacuum modulator sounds like its out to lunch pour some trans fluid into the dipstick and see if white smoke blows out of the exhaust afterwards. this is maybe a 5-10min job if this is the case. while youre at it, pull the gov. gear out of the side of the trans and clean it up. -
EJ22T was never in an impreza...EJ22 was from 95? on. for reliablity and being able to withstand being beat on, and be driven home after the race - the impreza hands down. an RX is too unpredictable...i have a built-up XT turbo with the same drive as an RX and it never fails to leave me scratching my head...we have a love/hate relationship. i love it, it hates me...XT6s are an oddity all in thier own, and with that - parts cost $$$$$$. a 5spd EJ18 would still eat a stock EA82T for lunch, and most after market EJ25 and EJ22 stuff could be persuaded to fit this engine. it is essentially an EJ22, minus .4L

Can't bust crank pulley bolt (just a whine)
Dennis ex24 replied to NorseKode's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
kamikaze starter bump...pull the coil wire of the disty so the engine doesnt fire up ive even used the reverse bump to get the bolt back on, never failed...a 22mm socket on a 1/2inch ratchet and a pipe sleeved over it, resting on the battery tray area on on the ground. for reverse, use the ground. very interesting if you do it wrong, have had a ratchet end up in my neighbors yard once. -
some progress on the XT from hell... i decided im going to go ahead and pull the all the A/C related stuff, i figure ill save of lot of lost HP once its out of the way. this is the optimal time to do it, the cars been sitting on the lift for 3 weeks waiting for a new short block...head bolts were stripped as were the bolt holes in the block resulting in a blown HG... probably looking at about 75lbs of stuff coming off at least? the damn compressor has to weigh 20 by itself, its a monster. if anyone else has any other ideas to get this thing down in the weight department, please share. id like to get this thing down to honda territory (2500-2600) - unlikely, but it would be a real competitor in the upcoming autoX season beginning in the spring and a blast in the 1/4mi too.

air ride has a fuse in the fuse box with all the other fuses...that circuit also controls the power door locks. -
how do i tell what gen my heads are?
Dennis ex24 replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
there are casting marks on the bottom of the heads... the casting will read "EA82" either by itself, underlined, or boxed. GEN 1 - will read "EA82" by itself GEN 2 - will read "EA82" underlined GEN 3 - will read "EA82" in a box on your RX, i remember the turbo side was a gen 3 and the drivers side was a gen 1 EDIT: added the info below... one thing i forgot to mention was the build quality of the heads... seems to me the only difference in the 3 of those is more metal in the valve area. this re-inforces in the event of overheating... in my opinion, if you dont over heat the car the heads will be fine...and honestly i dont think there is a such thing as a "good" EA82T head. they will crack as soon as they get the chance to...once that gasket is gone, it usually means trouble. -
It blowed up real good
Dennis ex24 replied to subarubrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i dont know dude ER27s are tough horses, i think they were stronger than EA82s. i knew of one that overheated so bad it stopped running, when it cooled down it was fine...ive also seen many do well over 220K. -
Ej22t?
Dennis ex24 replied to tjdrury's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
as corky and i mentioned - its more of like a 2.2 version of the EJ20G, same bore and stroke also from what i remember. no piston oil jets like our USDM 2.2L turbos also...designation from the VIN tag on the 22B is "EJ22G". another important point is that the engine is specific to that car. devastatingly fast (have heard 12.6-12.8 1/4 mile) with a torque curve thats really not even a curve at all - just a steady incline. max horse power is at 3K too if im not mistaken. -

not to be a smart rump roast or anything... but i work for subaru, its not an EJ22T block regardless of what people on iclub or nasioc say - this is from SOA engineers, im not relaying bad info...i could walk across the parking lot and look at the car right now. nomad - do a search for 22B online or something
