From criagslist: http://denver.craigslist.org/for/180601881.html I'd hope it's a timing belt or some such thing. I sent the guy a PM, so we'll see how he responds. I think I can see a 5spd in there. I've been wanting to trade up the sedan for a wagon, and this could be the right price! Picutre this: White 92 Loyale sedan towing Blue 92 Wagon down highway 36. Just Kidding, although I wonder....

What happened to me: I'd punch that a/c switch and my temp would climb and climb til it was about a nickle thickness away from the red zone, so I'd shut it off and it'd go back down to normal zone. Without the a/c on it'd be in the 1/3 to 2/3 range on the temp gauge My problems turned out to be: 1) not enough coolant because 2) I had a pin hole in one of my hoses and 3) my radiator was clogged. So I replaced the rad with a beefy used one as well as 5 of the hoses. Now I run at less than 1/3 on the temp gauge normally and right about 1/3 with the a/c on, and it feels goooood! That's my experience, hope it helps.

Opinion Poll:
patkennedy78 replied to bryanthompson's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
A looks very nice. Tasteful, original, not overdone. Some people don't have the restraint for that, but I thing it looks great. Nice photoshop work by the way. -
Hey, coolant problems, this I can relate to. First of all, make sure you have enough coolant in your system. Take time to refill your radiator on an incline, and make sure it's bubble free. Just search for burp or refill and coolant, and you'll find the procedure. After that keep an eye on your temp gauge and when it goes up. In town, on the highway, at idle, whenever. Also start using your nose. Sniff, do you smell coolant at any certian time? Post what you find and go from there.

I picked up a Upper Rad Hose from Napa and refilled with coolant and made it home. On my way I picked up a used radiator from Roos Only for $60. I got the lower rad hose, 2 heater hoses, and 1 more hose from Napa. So I drained the coolant, pulled the rad and hoses and started to inspect and play. The accessory belts were acceptable, but will need to be changed. And no play in the waterpump shaft, thanks for the tip hoozie! I pulled the timimg belt covers while I was there, the belts looked good, so I left them be for the time being. I tried to get at the PITA hose under the A/C compressor, but long story short, it remains there, hopefully I'll get at it when the timing belts and oil and water pump get changed. Now for the radiator. Roos only told me it came off a 90 Loyale, Auto, Turbo. When I compared them it was noticeable thicker, I don't want to say dual core, but beefier, were the turbo rads bigger? When I put it in it was about 1/2 inch taller, so the mounting bolts didn't line up. I pulled it back out, and switched the rubber mounting gromments on the bottom with the original radiator. Put it back in and it still wouldn't line up. I spent most of the time trying to line up the radiator, but it still was about a half inch off. I pulled the gromments off and it lined up perfectly, the bottom of the rad has a little play, but nothing that is too concerning to me. Test drive was great, temp gauge never hit above 1/4. I flipped on the a/c and ran on the highway and in town with stop and go and it never got above half!!! I went from Denver to Boulder and back for the Memorial Day weekend, with and without the a/c, and she was cool as a cucumber!!! I'll keep my eye on the coolant level to make sure it's full and not using any.

Blown HG and swap/motor work options... Help!
patkennedy78 replied to fastenova's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Definatly start with a compression test, even though oil + coolant is pretty telling, you'd kick yourself if it wasen't the HG's. I'd really evaluate what you want out of the car and if you are going to be happy with it for another 100K+ if you want to do the block work. -
So I pulled of the interstate this morning and noticed steam coming from under the hood. I pulled into a parking lot and found that my upper radiator hose had a nice crack in it! Coolant everywhere!!! So after my last coolant hose incident (see link) I'm ready to rebuild the whole she-bang. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=57268 I'm going to do upper and lower rad hoses, 2 heater hoses, radiator, and what else? I'll check out the PITA hose under the A/C compressor, I know if I don't replace it'll go next, so we'll see on that one. Should I do the coolant temp sensor by the thermosat and the thermoswitch on the radiator too? Any other hoses or cooling system components I'm missing? I'm going to wait to do the water pump till replace the t-belts, accessory belts, oil pump & seals, and cam seals. A compression test is probably in order as well, got my fingers crossed that my head gaskets are intact!

MEET: CO: May 21th at Red Rocks Park
patkennedy78 replied to The Korean's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Sorry to say I won't make this one, I have family in town. Sounds like it gonna be a good time though. I know it's going to be tough to get through the meet without all the glory of a stock 92 Loyal Sedan, but I'm sure you'll manage. Have Fun! -
Looking for this font...
patkennedy78 replied to LiftedHatchSubie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Do you want to spell different things with it, or do you want to just replicate the word "Baja" If you just want the Baja I could reproduce it in a vector format in Illustrator. Then you could scale it to any size / color you want. -
Nice! Where did you get that one? What are you doing with your old one?

Yeah, no kidding, what happened, that's a pretty big ding. Did you guys take the engine out? Was it drivers or passengers side? -
BRAT Paint for the ER27TT Advise
patkennedy78 replied to Gravityman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As a designer I would tell you to think of a strong concept or theme. Like "70's Muscle" "Vintage" "Rally" "Stock Sleeper" "Military" From there do some research into a specific catagory, dare I say go to the library. The best designs come from a strong concept. Besides "Make it hella crazy fast" what did you have in mind when you started the ER27 project? From a personal stand point I'll say go with what makes you happy. If black and orange are your thing, go for it. When I think of those 2 colors I think Halloween and Boss Mustangs. I'd sketch out 10 or 12 designs at least to start and go from there. Good Luck -
Another Hill hold question
patkennedy78 replied to yodannyc's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So you get in the car, press the brake pedal, push in the clutch, shift into reverse, and release the clutch, what happens? Does your car die? Does it try to go, but can't because the hill holder is engauged with the clutch fully released? (Like driving with the e-brake on?) What happens when your normally driving and use your hill holder? -
I think I found the culprit! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/846/cracked_hose.JPG mdjdc, whoozie: Is that the hose you were talking about? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/846/hose_spray.jpg I replaced the hose and filled the radiator again. I let the engine run for 20 or so min, and all was well. I took a test drive, things seemed to be good. When I got back and opened the hood I did smell some burning and saw some smoke coming from the exhaust / cats. I think the excess and spilt coolant needs a few days to burn off. But I'll consider this a victory for now.

My thermostat never opened in the boiling water, so I'm off to get a new one from the dealer. I removed, inspected, and put back on both heater hoses, they looked good. There are only 2 right? mdjdc: I beleive I checked that one, but I will double check it. I saw on the hose diagrams the one that runs under the a/c compressor, and it looks awful to get to, so that may be last on my list. Anyone have a good procedure to replace the hose that goes under the a/c compressor??? I'll keep you updated.

Hmm, heater hose / core. Ok, ah, the heat works fine if that helps any, I have heart a gurgle out of the core once or twice on start up. Isn't there a test I can do with connecting them together or some such thing? Everything is cold now. I looked at all the hoses, that I could find anyway, and they seem to be ok. The hose from the thermostat housing to the top of the block pulled off easily on the block side when I tugged it, so I checked it and hooked it back up. I opened the housing and took out the thermostat, it's boiling as I type this.

I started to smell coolant on my way home from work. I pulled over and found the engine bay puffing away. After it cleared I found the passenger side of the spare was wet, along with alot of the hoses back by #3 cylinder were wet. Smoke seemed to be rising from the top of the transmission where the cover for the timing marks are, not out of the hole, but from that area, as well as by the intake manifold. I let it cool for a while, flipped on the defrost, and was on my way, the temp was fine until I got off the highway and had to stop at a red light, then it climbed, so I pulled over again, still smoking and there were small puddles starting to form under the car. I let it cool for a few hours, and topped off the radiator, it took about 1/2 gallon. It sat overnight and the same thing happened again this morning. The temp gauge never made it to redline, but smoking. The Radiator, upper and lower hoses, all look good. I can't find any obvious sources for the smoke. I called into work today, so here's my plan for troubleshooting. Wait for all to cool, top off with coolant, more visual inspection. Find diagram of cooling system hoses, and check all. I have a cheap compression tester, so I'll try that after the hoses. After that I'm looking for direction. I'd really appreciate any help given. Thanks

Nice gen 1 wagon parked at pull n save...
patkennedy78 replied to Jerry DeMoss's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've thought about making up some sort of card to leave under wipers on nice looking old subes to let them know about this site. There is a brat in my area that I keep seeing. The guy has obviously taken care of it. So I'm sure he'd appreciated the USMB. Maybe if I get time I'll sketch out a few versions. -
MEET: CO: May 21th at Red Rocks Park
patkennedy78 replied to The Korean's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Wow, I found two CO meet up posts in 1 day! I gotta explore more! Hey Krazy is that the Integer Group? I'd give my left thumb for a lowly grunt position there. -
Rock! That's awesome, looks like you guys had a great time getting the footage. Nice soundtrack as well.

Where's my two gallons?
patkennedy78 replied to patkennedy78's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I checked for dents and didn't see anything unusual. Unless it becomes a problem I think I'll chalk it up to the float/sending unit in the tank, since the gauge never reads full. Thanks for all the replies.
