  1. I am new to this forum as of today so I apologize if my format is terrible but I have a question concerning what engine I could put in my Outback. I threw a rod through my engine block and a local business is parting out a 2002 Forester 5-speed (my Outback is automatic). I don't know specifically what engine is in the vehicle but would whatever is in it fit my 2001 Outback? I currently have a EJ 251 I believe. Attached is the engine i'm looking at purchasing.
  2. Hello, I've bought a damaged Forester XT Premium 2015 and I'm starting the recovery process. While I'm waiting for the body parts I'm focusing in putting the engine to run. First I sent the car to an mechanic and he told me that the engine ecu is not responding, because his scanner wasn't able to connect to the vehicle to read any fault codes. After that I sent the vehicle to the Subaru dealership and they confirmed that the ecu is damaged and needs to be replaced. I think that diagnostic is weird, because the crash didn't affect much the engine or any electronic parts. Does anyone know about something that might be 'blocking' the access to the ecu, maybe due to the crash? Something like the air bag system blocking the engine or something? The dealership is asking me $2000 for a new ECU, while I found an used for around $600. Is it possible to just replace the original ECU by a similar from another car? Is there any kind of locks, keys, passwords or something that might block the communication between the ECUs? Regarding the ECU partnumbers, mine is: 22765AH011, while the used I found is 22765AH010. All the other parts I found in the stores are not equal, but similar partnumbers: 22765AG970, 22765AG973, 22765AH510. http://parts.subaru.com/ http://www.subarugenuineparts.com/ https://www.subarupartsdepot.com/oem-subaru-parts.html Are all these ECUs the same, but with different 'software versions'? I have a 1980 BRAT the engine has run sand through the carb and im assuming also the engine and the 4spd does not work for what I am looking to do with this car I found a 1989 GL that has every part I was going to try and swap into my BRAT engine, trans, rear dif, transfer case, and seats besides the seats what work will need to be done to swap over the whole or close to whole drive train? is it plug and play or am I going to need to bust out the welder and fabricobble some mounts or is this swap completely not doable I have never done or tried to do anything like this with a car the closest was helping with a 305 swap into a ventura with no front end and the mounts were fabricobbled by someone else who had done it before.
  4. Hello everyone, I am preparing myself to rebuild an EJ25 engine in my 2006 Subaru Impreza 2.5i SOHC. I want to make sure my valves are at or near original factory spec. If all I do is lap the valves, I understand that I may need to readjust the stem height. Will this cause any problem with compression or timing? Is there a way to determine if I need to recut the 3 angled surfaces on the valves? If I buy new valves for this used head, it looks like I will need to lap them, but will they sit correctly in the head? Is there a way to check the valve seats and check it's angles or is all this that I'm asking about for the machine shop to do?
  5. Hi, I have an 1985 VW Vanagon with a blown engine. I want to swap the engine with a 2.2L Subaru engine . I cant do the job myself, but if there is mechanics living in the Portland, OR area I would love to work out a deal with you! Any feedback would be great!
  6. Hi, I just got my first Subaru, a 1978 Brat! It's been sitting for a while (no rust AZ car!!) The original owner died and his grandaughter knew nothing about it or it's history. I can turn the engine by hand and it was full of oil, very good sign!! the shifter was unbolted and laying on the floor, I bolted it back up and could only get first (?) and neutral. Tranny had NO oil showing on the dipstick. I'm thinking they ran it out of oil and fried the trans? Any ideas from you experts? I would like to upgrade to a 5 spd if I'm replacing or rebuilding the trans, I've heard Subaru had a 1.8 5 speed dual range for the 1981 Brat that might be a easy swap? Thanks for your ideas and help!

  8. I have a 1998 legacy 2.5 DOHC needing a engine. I also have a 1999 forester SOHC. can the forester engine work in the legacy ? maybe a ecm swap with converters and o2's along with engine?
  9. My Brat is a special one, but it was horribly neglected, abused, and badly repaired. I had been fixing it up when people where I lived turned out to be real lowlives who stole anything they could trade or sell for drugs, and caused an illegal eviction. I ended up homeless, living in a desolate area, and became broken down out there, with nothing close, almost a mile to walk just to get water, 6 miles to walk to get or do anything else, and what aggravates that is that I have Bursitis & Plantar Fascitis in both feet, two bad ankles and one bad knee, which means on hell of a lot of pain and difficulty. Through it all, I have been doing all I can, what little I can, to try to fix and save the Brat with very little luck. One person after another has tried to talk me into abandoning it, but I refuse to. With any luck, I may soon be able to get it started, and find myself in Lake Elsinore, CA. Are there any really gifted Subaru Mechanics or Subaru freaks in that area who could help me fix this Brat and give it the fix-up it so deserves? Thank you.
  10. New member and its great to see all the support for these amazing vehicles! Anyhow, I have a 1986 DL original motor, trans, everything. It's a bare bones subie with power nothing, no AC, 4 speed, front wheel drive, front wheel e-brake. Like with everything else, the motor has slowly tiring over the years and I'd hate to get rid of it. Horsepower is the grail of this quest and how to go about a motor swap, suspension upgrade, etc. I have no idea what type of motor/suspension products to procure, what to look for, how to start, and of course, I'll need to upgrade my metric wrench set. Suggestions are certainly welcome. Thanks!!

Hi, im looking at a 2002 forester with a 2.5L flat 6 engine with a 5 speed and 60,000 miles but when i started it up at the used car dealership it ran really rough and almost sounded like a diesel for a bit also the whole car shook a bit when I was starting it and when i shut it down. Is this normal or is it a sign of something wrong with the engine? Thanks

  13. Siiiiiighhhh. Okay, so now I'm having another problem with my Subaru Loyale. When I try to turn the ignition off, the key won't come out. It will turn as far as cutting off, but not to the full off position. I use the method the manual tells me, to reach under the steering wheel and put your finger in the hole where you toggle the little button inside that releases the key, and it does. But I just wanna know WHY this is happening and what to do about it? And is it dangerous to keep driving?
  14. Good Morning Everyone. My question is about a noise that I believe is coming from my engine... or at least some rotating component attached to the engine. The sound is a sort of clank, not a tick like lifters make, and it doesn't seem to be rapid enough to actually match the engine rpm..... This being said it DOES change with an increase in rpm. It reminds me of the sound older diesel truck engines make at low rpm or when they are cold. The clanking...... The biggest problem I have in diagnosing the sound is that it only happens under load, and is the worst at low rpm. For example, when I drive home there is a water/runoff dip in the road right before a hill. So I slow down, go over the dip and accelerate up the hill; at this point in 2nd gear I'm around 1500-2000 rpm.This is when the noise is the most prominent, possibly because there is little wind noise at that slow a speed and the engine noise in limited at that low a rpm. The engine ALSO has a ticking noise that either fades or stops suddenly when the engine is warmed usually. I have (according to the oil pressure gauge) upwards of 65-psi at 3000+ rpm and 15-psi at idle which I believe is appropriate for this vehicle. This I'm figuring IS a stuck lifter that frees up when the engine warms but I thought it was worth mentioning. Any ideas? Thanks.
  15. So I just sunk $1300 into replacing the head gaskets on my 98 Legacy Outback Limited. Got the car back and everything was fine. Drove it up north over the weekend (~200 miles) and on the way back the engine lost power while cruising at 70MPH. It sort of lurched forward as if I were running out of gas (which I wasn't). I attempted to start the car after this and the AT Oil Temp light came on and flashed 16 times. I drove about another 1/4 mile before it died again. I got the car towed home and figured I'd take it to my mechanic the next day. Well I tried to start it and now I have nothing. No crank, nothing but a faint *click* sound when I turn the key. Anyone have this problem happen before? I can't think of anything that would cause my car to both die on the highway, trigger the AT Oil Temp light, AND no crank no start afterwards. But maybe the problems are unrelated. In either case, I'm kind of at a loss of what to do with it at this point. Any advice is appreciated.
  16. So I can see there is a ton of information available (relatively) about swapping the EJ22 into EA81 Brats. Especially in that page on numbchuxconversions.com, makes it seem like a piece of cake. I want to swap an EJ22 and 5MT into my Brat out of an old legacy, but for some reason the very few I have been able to find in the area have the auto transmission, and if I don't start my Brat swap soon, it just isn't going to happen. I'm working on a budget, so I'm not about to start buying parts individually, I just want the whole car. I'm wondering how much more difficult it would be to use the EJ25 SOHC, because there are loads of those for sale around here for really good deals. I know about the head gasket issues, I'd of course take care of that before putting the motor in, just finished doing it on my 02 legacy. The Brat would absolutely fly with that 2.5, so my question is why does nobody use those? Is it significantly more difficult? Does it just not fit properly? Thanks guys.
  17. Greetings all, Im replacing my DOHC 2.5 engine for an SOHC 2.0 JDM... Is anyone familiar with that type of swap?? Do you know what kind of issues i would be encountering?? So far i was so lucky as to take out my old DOHC engine. Realized i couldn't use my intake manifold (duh). So I'm curious as to know anyones pros and cons to my upcoming project.
  18. Hi, We drained the oil today and some metal parts came out. Looks like halves of some flat spring washer of some sort. Can anyone identify these parts? Does this mean my engine is dead? No other metal or grinding are present in the oil. One of these pieces cam out on the magnetic drain plug. I fished 3 more out with a magnet taped to the end of a wire. Does that account for all of "them" or could there be more in there? Photo attached. My son needs to drive this back to Utah next week. Too much to hope that it's something harmless I suppose. I might be able to drop the pan but I'm not sure if I can get to all the bolts around the frame mount without removing the motor. 1995 Subaru Legacy L wagon. 2.2L motor I think. Thanks.

I HAVE A 92 LOYALE, EARLIER THIS SUMMER MY ALTRINATOR WAS ON IT'S WAY OUT, THERE WASN'T ENOUGH POWER TO POWER THE INJECTORS I BELIEVE SO I COULD ONLY DRIVE AROUND REALLY SLOW ANY TIME I GAVE IT GAS IT WOULD LURCH, WELL AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 50KM THAT DAY WHEN I STOPPED DRIVING I NOTICED THE CAR WAS SMOKING LOTS! WELL NOW OIL LEAK OUT OF EVERY WHERE, LIKE IT BUILT UP PRESSURE AND BLEW SEALS, OR IS STILL BEING PRESSURIZED SOME WHERE. PERHAPS PVC VALVE? ALSO I DEVELOPED A EXTERNAL HEAD GASKET LEAK WHICH MAKES ME WONDER IF THERE WASN'T ENOUGH POWER AT THE TIME TO POWER THE FAN, I'VE CHECKED COMPRESSION ONE READS A BIT LOWER THAN THE OTHERS, IF I REMEMBER THEY WERE AROUND 175-180.......NO SURE IF THOSE NUMBERS ARE CORRECT. WEIRD THING IS I CAN DRIVE 400KM AND LOSE THE SAME AMMOUNT OF IIL IF I DRIVE 40KM IN SHORT TRIPS TO TOWN AND BACK. IF ANY ONE HAS ADVICE, OR SIMILAR STORIES PLEASE SHARE THEM, I PLAN TO PULL THE ENGINE AND DO THE WORK, BUT I WANT TO THROW OUT THE MESSAGE FIRST. I LOVE THE CAR, BUT IT'S BEEN A HEAD ACHE TO BE HONEST.

  22. Hi. I have a 1993 Subaru Loyale 1.8L SPFI ea82n/a. The fan in the picture is always on. Is this correct? If you are standing in front of the car, the fan is located somewhat driver side of center. I believe it's a belt driven fan? Not sure. But if the car is on, the fan is always on. I'm wondering if this is correct and if it is not correct, what should I do to fix it? Thanks
  23. okay so i have been working on this thing for over two months now. I originally was only going to change the timing belt on my 2009 Subaru outback. I changed it and put everything back together but it wouldn't start. I took it back apart and changed the valves because they were bent, and changed the head gaskets, exhaust gaskets, intake gaskets, and the spark plugs. I put it back together and lined the timing marks and now it will not start it only backfires... it will crank but it doesn't fully start just backfires.
  24. Hello Everyone, I just picked up this car with an EA81 with bent pushrods. I have the engine out, on a makeshift bench and ready to fix the issue. This is my first time working on an engine, so I will need your help and guidance. Really looking forward to ripping this thing apart and finally seeing what happens inside this thing. Preliminary questions: What are some good must-have resource for the job I am undertaking What special tools will i need What are big DON'TS while ripping this apart I am doing this for the first time and really want to understand the inns and outs, language, terms so any resources I should check out, let me know The Issue, my current situation, what should I do? Picked the engine up, creatively moved it by myself to my new homemade bench Here is how she sits now, all the bolts are out, but this flywheel casing will not come off from the engine. I didn't want to force anything, so thought it would be a great time to stop and actually find out what to do next. I was trying to take it apart to get to the Cam to see if there is any damage to the cam. bolts out The push rod that was bent is the 3rd one from the left. So if we count 1, 2, 3, 4 stating with the one furthest to the left. Number 3 is the one that was bent. (drivers side of engine) On this side If we count 1,2,3,4 number 2, was not bent but it was stuck. Number 2 and number 3 are right across from each other, I imagine both are activated by the same cam. (if thats the right way to say that) this is the passenger side of the engine. Looking for any tips or advice, thanks a ton!
  25. okay so i have basically completed the ej swap, everything except the wiring. most the wiring is done but i cant get it to run. considering hiring somebody to troubleshoot. how much would somebody with ej wiring experience charge to come over and trouble shoot my wiring issues? I live in Woodinville thanks in advance
