So.. I found and purchased my dream machine Subaru GL-10turbo (85,000 original miles) After 2,000 of my own miles she comes with one incredibly annoying issue that no one.. and I mean no master Subaru mechanic can fix or even have an answer for. The alternator accessory belt is simply not made anymore. Seemingly ALL aftermarket belts are just not proper enough to last more than 1,000 miles before they have stretched too far for the alternator/pulley adjustment and just squeal like a dying pig. PLEASE... for the love of god.. as I put on my 3rd belt in 2,000 miles.. does anyone have a solution. Even better... please provide details on the best belt and make of belt. Maybe even a link if where to order one. Or maybe I am completely missing the answer and it's a pulley gone bad?? If a Subaru mechanic will not help me figure it out I thought to try here.. Thanks Everyone!!!

Hi im a new owner of a 1988 ea81 subaru brumby that i have bought as a project car and there are a few things that i would like to ask about 1st- the plan was always to replace the engine with something better, i dont need ridiculous power however i am looking for at least 100kw N/A. so far the ej22(1or2series naturally aspirated) looks like the go because apparently you dont need to modify the chassis rails so i wont have legal issues, it slots easy and is carbureted, being carbureted without ecu is a good thing as i am a simple mechanic with a very tight budget and installing an installing ecu is apparently a very big hassle. im looking for something that wont be to difficult to swap. also i would like to know what issues there is going to be legally with changing it (im from queensland) 2nd- now this is actually my first build (how else do you learn) however i do have some ex mechanic friends helping me out with it. but i was wondering what is the go with the gearbox because i want to upgrade it to a 5spd instead of the standard 4spd but i dont know what to get/do (any help) 3rd- Wheels, now i have been looking around and have found out my 1988 brumby like all the other similar subie models has a really uncommon stud pattern and i cannot find anything on what to do to make it compatible with other patterns and i cannot find for the life of me find any 4x140 wheels that look half decent , i would like to get a nice looking set of 13-14 inch rims that wont empty a bank. 4th- cruise control, now apparently this is highly achievable with any vehicle, i just dont know how or what to get 5th- power steering, now i know this is a thing but i dont know what to do in the situation of an engine swap, does anything change or do you just use the old leone steering like i have seen some people do. please know i am new to this!! i will probably be wrong about allot of things but dont comment just to say "go home" i have a long time to work on this and have help from lots of people (even an old subaru mechanic), if you could help me out and give me some "helpful" advise i would really appreciate it, i may ask further questions. thanks in advance -Lewis

So about 8 months ago i crashed and totaled my previous car. after searching through Craigslist i stumbled upon my Subaru GL. She runs great i have some minor work that i need to do. the front windshield is cracked and iv noticed lots of older subarus have the same kind of crack that goes horizontal across the windshield. Anyway just because i decided to type in the car into craigslist and a couple other sites to check its value and see people listing and the worth to be somewhere between 2000-3000. And that is for worn down/ used. Maybe i am naive but to me thats ridiculously high. i have talked to a couple guys at shucks and they said its good because your able to do lots of swaps for the engine ect. I would just like some more info. I paid 500$ dollars for the thing and i do love it. (very reliable, Good gas mileage but i am still surprised. Will anyone please enlighten me on the subject?

Wipers on my 1988 subaru GL at times do nothing, but work most of the time. If you turn the car off, and turn the key to the 'on' position (so has power and headlights can be turned on) the wipers work, but then when you start the car, they may or may not work. A side point that may just confuse the issue is that the radio is also affected the same as the wipers at the same time, but not always. The fuse has been checked and is fine. Any ideas? 12/13/2016 Found a fix to this issue. When they stop working jiggle the keys, like you are trying (but not too hard) to turn the car on or off. That fixes it every time. don't know root cause of problem, but don't really have time to ook into it. Thanks everyone who tried to help!

I have a front wheel drive 3-speed Automatic 1988 Subaru DL Recently I had the ol' "doesn't shift in drive!" issue that is notorious in this transmission in particular. (My story goes like this one: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/158122-3at-problems-in-86-leone-turbo/) I replaced the Oil Modulator on the transmission.... no difference. So now it's time to check linkage and the Governor. But first I have some questions. Does that linkage bar look alright? I am unsure where it should or shouldn't be bent.My shifter goes into park but needs a very hard push to actually CLICK the lever into the park detent. I also want to know if the second image is indeed the governor cap with the three bolts. If so, do I need to drain my ATF before I remove it?

Howdy, My Subaru won't start all of a sudden. I am new to this car, so bear with me. I will explain what I have observed. Upon turning the key to a point the lights turn on the fuel pump in the rear makes a "Rrrrrrr... Rrrrrrr" Sound with about a one-and-a-half second pause between sounds. This happened before but the car would start and then there would be a constant "rrrrr" sound. There was a situation not so long ago where I cranked for a while longer than I'd like to, and it did start. The fuel pump and fuel filter look brand new. But my first assumption to this point is that I must have been too low on gas and they got gummed up. However, I must consider than the sound is normal. Again, I'm a newb. Did a firing test. Definitely firing. Suggestions, ideas, knowledge? Update 1: After letting the starter attempt to do it's job for about five or six seconds the car did start and does start every time after. However, I do not know if that means the problem is somehow solved. The idle itself on the first rough-start was fine, but became more adequate all of a sudden with a higher RPM. I will be doing a cold start soon to see if I experience the same difficulty. Update 2: I let the fuel pump oscillate two to three times before attempting a start. After actually running or being on a trip it starts right away. The short (if there truly was one) is also gone. I have not experienced difficulty to start anymore. I assume it was dirty fuel causing inadequate pressure. But really, I don't know.

Hey everyone, I'm new here. I decided to join because I am looking into getting a 88 GL Wagon from a man my dad works with. It's the 1.8 (TBI?) coupled to a 5 speed with dual range 4wd, AC, power windows and locks, and silver in color. I might be trading a snowmobile for it otherwise I more than likely will be selling my current car (94 Saturn SL1) and then buying the GL. Anyways, the man who owns it has put a lot of new things into it over the past few years main things being the clutch and motor itself. It has some bubbling paint around where the windshield meets the bodywork. There's also some rust around the rear wheel wells and behind the rear wheels, however the underside of the car looks pretty clean still. I took it for a test drive and it seems to drive okay, it fired right up and was smooth but the clutch pedal had little feel to it and was mushy. Everything else seems clean and functioning. The only things that need work mechanically (to my knowledge) is one side needs new wheel bearings and there is a fuel pressure regulator or something on the gas tank that leaks. With this information that I have provided what is your opinions on it? Is there any red flags or anything that I should be aware of when hopefully purchasing it? Thanks guys!

I just bought my first subaru, It is a 1988 Subaru GL-10 Turbo 1.8L 2wd Sedan, I would like to start doing some small modifications to the car, and slowly build the car up. I have enough stock parts to build this car over a total of 4 times (minus complete motors, transmissions, and shells, I have extra body panels and a ton of etc parts) Basically i was wondering for first of on this list of mods: 5 Lug conversion Lowered suspention Blow off valve Front mount intercooler adjustable boost controller w/ boost gauge catback exhaust anything to add some small horsepower without breaking the bank too badly, or to make the car more reliable. please if somebody could start me off in the right direction that would be great, i just finished all of the body work to the car, now i am eager to start modding!
