Good Evening, I just joined the forum, thank you for having me. I loaned my 2003 Outback to a friend in need recently. While he was driving on an exit ramp off the turnpike it broke down. No warning lights came on before or during the break down. He could not get it to start back up. Also, he says the dipstick was dry when he checked the oil after the fact. He put more oil in and towed it back to my place. Once I got it back to my block, I was able to get it started. However, it is making a very loud clacking sound once it starts. The engine seems to be running normal with the exception of this sound. The sound kicks in several seconds after the engine turns over. I took a video but am having trouble attaching. A friend with some mechanical experience thought it might be valve related after hearing it. Any thoughts or suggestions before I take it in. I don't have a trusted subaru mechanic in New York, my guy is in Virginia and before I tow it there myself I'd appreciate any insight anyone might have. Thanks! Ryan

Hi All, Posted a short write-up about an EJ25 to EJ20 swap. Thought it might be of interest to have the EJ25 video available for diagnosis. I suspect a spun bearing... Replaced the engine and plan to rebuild to have on-hand for future use... Diesel_EJ25.wmv

I'm in the market for a new vehicle to replace my 2003 Forester. I have some hearing problems (ringing in my ears [tinnitus], and some hearing loss starting). Wind and road noise really stir things up. I need the quietest vehicle possible... but I'd really like to have AWD, and stick with Subaru if possible. So... what do folks think is the quietest model of recent year Subarus? I would most likely go with a 2008-2012 model, not a 2013 or new one. Thanks! Richard in Colorado

New 2014 outback 2.5, engine makes humming.woo, wooo, wooo, jet engine sound at exactly 3700 rpms, goes away above or below 3700 rpms.will also make the sound in neutral. Dealer could not figure out. They started checking other cars on the lot and they all do this. They had me meet with Subaru engineer and his legacy 3.6 made same noise. They cannot tell me what this is only that it is a "normal characteristics " very disturbing. Anyone ever heard of this? anyone experience this with outback or legacy 2.5 or 3.6? Should I be concerned long term w/car?
