So there has been alot of questions about bent valves from timing belt failures. It's been my experience that if the belt breaks, it surely bent valves. But sometimes, if the belt just skips a few teeth, things are okay. Example : this '06 forester started running incredibly rough about 10k miles after the owner did his own timing belt replacement. Pulled the covers, and found this IMG_2926 by Dans Subaru, on Flickr IMG_2925 by Dans Subaru, on Flickr He had striped out the lower idler hole, and it had walked funky out of the hole and forced the belt against the inside of the cover until it shredded and it had skipped 2 teeth on the passenger and 4 teeth on the drivers side. After tapping the lower hole deeper, and installing a longer bolt to hold the idler, I installed a new belt and did a compression test. 165+ in all cyls. Lucky SOB So if yer belt has skipped, don't go immediately tear the engine down. Worth a compression test first.

05 forester xt manual. I got a slight clunk that recurs every couple seconds or so when the a/c is on. Then I noticed about one third of my a/c belt was chewed up and wrapped around the backside of the compressor pulley. I cut the belt off which was about 3-4 years old and the a/c compressor pulley spins nice and smooth with no play but the clutch is very stiff/drags and not smooth at all in either direction. But I also noticed the idler/ tensioner pulley has a bit of play as well. I'm assuming I'll need to replace the idler pulley but what about the compressor?...From what I read the a/c clutch is not a serviceable part. The crank pulley/harmonic balancer has no visible play or separation. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All - Replaced timing belts, idler , tensioner etc. Drove the car 300 miles and let it sit for a day.Got back in and heard a distinctive hi pitched whine, lower at idle higher at speed coming from engine. Not discernable at freeway speed (too high pitched?). Got back in the car the following day and didnt hear the noise. The noise was way too obvious to be "normal". If I knew more I might suspect a problem with the alternator...but then it could be any of the other items replaced? Any thoughts would be most welcome!

Hi All--- I'll be pulling the engine from my 2003 Forester (next week. I hope) to address a number of issues. I'm trying to put together a parts list so I don't have to waste time chasing stuff down once it's out. Does anyone have a list of parts I'll need and/or any suggestions about what else I'd be smart to do "while I'm at it." Dennis111 had a good write-up on his HG replacement, with pics on Pbucket. Thanks, Dennis Thanks, JW
