  1. Good morning! I turned the key in my ignition to the "on" position a couple days ago and my car started up fine but after about 3 seconds smoke started coming out from behind my steering wheel, i quickly turned the car off and the smoke stopped coming out. I ripped all the plastics off and found that my ignition switch was the culprit. After removing the switch i saw a piece of solder that had fallen off the connection and bridged two connections causing the short. The short was hot enough to melt the wires around the switch and ruin it so I went out and bought a new one. Being a student i have very little money or time to wait for OEM parts to arrive from the stealership. I bought an aftermarket part for $23. My problem with the aftermarket part is that the rear connections didn't align with the ignition barrel as you can see from the photo, both of these switches were in the same "on" position but they have different alignments on the back.. So the screw mounting hole didn't line up with the the part. I had to use zip ties and JB weld to get the new part into its home. Very frustrating. I am posting this so people can learn something important about crap aftermarket parts. -Mike
  2. So I got a new battery after I had my old one tested at Auto Zone and they said it was bad. New battery is good and worked fine, but after three days I went to start it and I got nothing that time. It can't be the starter cuz that is new too, I had it put in some months back and didn't even run the car that much, plus I had my brother tap it while I tried to start car and still nothing. Anybody got any idea? Could it be the alternator?
  3. Alright, so after 7 months I have finally got my car running again. I asked a friend of my mom's to give it one more jump the day after Thanksgiving, and this time I let the car run for almost 2 hours to get the battery charged up. So it's not an alternator or battery problem like some here were saying, but now the only problem is that every time I go to turn the key, there is a delay for some seconds before the car actually starts/cranks. Anybody have any idea what that could be? Starter relay? Ignition switch? The starter itself? The starter is new and was put in back in April but may not necessarily mean it's good. Anybody have any idea?
  4. EDIT: 7/30/15 Brat starts and runs, sorta! Still need help making sure where the wires go on the ignition switch. Currently we have it plugged in as IG(nition)->Black A(ccessories)->Blue R(egulator/rectifier)->White(this goes to battery) S(tarter)->Black/Yellow(this goes to starter) With this set up we can get the car to run but not idle. It will run as long as we keep the key turned. What we are unsure of, is there supposed to be a line that comes from the regulator/rectifier? There is another spade on the switch "B". How is the ICU supposed to be hooked up in the engine bay? There are two spades on it but we only have one wire plugged to it. We have a weak orange spark from the coil to the disty but when i try it from the plugs to the frame i get purple. On 1 and 4 we are getting intermittent spark to no spark at all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hello there! I just picked up a brat that needs a little work. Supposedly it ran last year so I'm hoping it won't take much to get it going. Its a 1981 1.8 AWD. He said it needed a new coil so I got one and put it in. When I put the battery in the blinkers were going off and when I went to turn the flashers off the horn went off and there were some sparks coming from the steering wheel. There are also a lot of things missing and wiring ghouls unknown to be. Here are some pictures of the my wiring woes. I have a Haynes manual but I can't really decipher it. I have yet to find a colored wire diagram, which I think would be more helpful. This large blue wire is grounded to the frame and has a male connector. I have no idea where it goes. The mostly black wire is spliced into another black wire that goes into the blue connector. Any ideas of where it goes and what it does? I'm not sure if both of these are female connections, I know one of them is for sure but the other may just be packed with dirt. They lead back into the firewall. I also have no idea what they connect to. The only idea I have about the blue female connection is that it may plug into this unit that is mounted on the strut tower because there is a male lead but that entire unit is grounded to the frame. Also, what are these boxes? [/url] Here is the beautiful fuse orifice. Is the circled one a fusible link? (PO said that the car wasn't getting spark and guessed it was either the coil, fusible link, or regulator). The green fuse is melted but not blown. Does anyone have a list of what the fuses are for?
  5. So I had a nice trip home from Pueblo CO to Florissant, But when I started my car in Pueblo, the ignition switch seemed gummed up. real hard to turn, but started OK. Now I can not turn the car Off ! ? I disconnected the power to the coil and the battery, OK, its off. Reconnected it and it starts and runs fine but can not turn key to off position? Any idea if this is a key or switch problem, or is it one unit? 99 Impreza, 2.2L Thanks, Bill
  6. First off, thank you for your time! My '96 Subaru Impreza has had an issue for the past few years where it will randomly not start. It can go at least 20 times starting/running normally, before it does not start. The problem started about 2 and a half years ago. I immediately thought it was the battery and replaced it. No change. I then replaced the battery cables. No change. I replaced the starter, no change. When I turn the car on, all of the dashboard lights/radio/headlights function normally. However, when I try to start the car, there will be one click, then nothing (headlights also do NOT dim). It does not try to "turn over" and there are not multiple clicking sounds. After about 5 or 10 minutes of scratching my head, it will turn on normally as if nothing had happened. I figure the only thing left it could be is the ignition switch. I just wanted to get advice before I brought it into a shop and spent all my money to get it fixed. Thanks!
  7. my subaru impreza hatchback 2.0i premium Key sometimes will not come out of the ignition switch. it does not happen every day,but today was the worst so far took me like 15 min to get my key out. I got the car in January 02-2014 and it has been going on and off for the last month.Sorry this is after I have put the car in park Thomas
  8. Anyone know of a good DIY on removing the lock cylinder. Mine is busted and i just want to knock all the tumblers out and have my legacy key work in it.
  9. I've been starting my '00 Legacy with just the ignition switch for the last few days after having it stolen and I'm just about to put in a new ignition. I'm a bit confused as to what the wires coming from the ignition barrel itself are for and where they plug in. Is one the steering lock maybe? Can someone help me out? Cheers!
