  1. Driving my Outback home from Midas on Tuesday (1/18/22) the car died coming over a hill and wouldn’t start back up. Towed it back to Midas where they checked the timing belt and drained the oil which had metal shavings. Midas doesn’t want to open it up to investigate. They say they are capable and equipped, but they no longer do that kind of work. I realize that there’s a 95% chance the engine is toast. Before I replace the engine I need to open it up and find out what happened. Could they have done something when replacing the oil pan gasket that could have caused it to seize up? on December 23rd they had changed the timing belt (and cam shaft seal), but left the bolt on the tensioner loose enough that it slipped. I had shown up to pick it up, started it, noticed it sounded weird and turned it off after a minute. The mechanic came out and had me start it again. It ran for another minute while we listened and tried to figure out what it was. They looked it over the next day and they said it was fine. I have driven the car probably 400 miles over the last 4 weeks. Is there still a chance that the engine was damaged by the timing slip, but wouldn’t completely fail for a month? What would it look like? Or, was it a mistake having to do with the oil pan gasket? What should I be looking for?
  2. Hello, I'm going to use Fuji ThreeBond 1215 Gray Silicone Sealer: If you have ever used this sealer, I have a question. Oil Pan: 1. How wide of a "bead" to you run around the base of the Oil Pan? 2. Do/Did you run the bead "around" the mounting bolts, or just one side (inner or outer). 3. How did it hold up to leaks? Thanks
  3. I'm sure this has been asked before. What Sealants are to be used on these applications? Oil Pump: Oil Pan: Rocker Covers (I know there is a seal that is there already, but from what I have seen "on the net" is it still doesn't hurt to run a bead around the Cover Lid Lip) true or false, if so what kind: Transmission Pan: Thanks
  4. Hey there, was tearing down a ea82 engine out of a 93 loyal that i jus picked up, The car would start and idle fine, didn't have much engine noise at all but would bog way down whenever you touched the gas/ put any load on the engine. Head gaskets were blown and one of the cylinders has really bad pitting/scoring but I also found this small dowel looking thing in the oil pan. Wondering where this may have come from? Thanks
  5. So after a long day at school on tuesday, i came out to my car after an hour or so of being home, to find a huge puddle of oil under my car. Puddle is an understatement.. it was ALL of the engines oil... Nooo! I grabed my head lamp and got under there thinking the worst. What i found was odd. The normal drain plug (the 17mm at an angle twards the passenger side) was dry as a bone, however, there was a second hole just beyond it, where all the oil had poured out along with the remains of what appeared to be a rubber grommet dangling from the hole. What is this hole? Its just behind the "normal" drain plug and is pointing straight down. what was supposed to be there? Ive worked on these alot and have even replaced oil pans and oil pan gaskets and i have never noticed this second hole before. Anybody know what this is or how i should plug it? Beleive it or not the cork gasket dosent leak and i dont want to replace the pan and go through that whole ordeal if i dont have to. Thanks for taking the time to read and your potential response. I did alot of searching and found no mention of this "second" hole or whatever it is. -1989 NA / EA82 5MT 4wd wagon Thanks!
