Hello all, My '05 Outback 2.5 5 speed needs a complete exhaust system, including the catalytic converter. Not sure what to do. Would like to spend $2k-$3k. Can anyone suggest a junkyard to get a used cat? Can anyone suggest a decent aftermarket exhaust system? I want to give my mechanic some ideas so we get this done properly and at reasonable cost. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Jeff in Boston

My Subie has had an ongoing exhaust problem for a while now. This car's saga is long, but I won't take up space here. Noisy exhaust, gray-blue smoke out the tail pipe, had to keep my foot on the gas on start up to keep it from dying, possible choke issue as well, etc. After a long drive (500 miles) to visit my daughter, the problem seemed worse. A couple of days later, I heard a soft pop and the car seemed to run much better. However, it started to auto-rev at start up—up to 2500 rpm then back down. Once the car warmed up and I started driving, it seemed fine. A day later (yesterday), it started to auto-rev whenever I idled. Tonight, on my drive home at highway speeds (55 mph), it started auto-revving at those speeds, and was going into the red. I had to pull over and stop three times within a couple of miles to let it calm down. Also makes an horrendous grating squeal when revving, as if a belt is rubbing hard. Help! Not a mechanic and I wouldn't know what looked normal and what didn't if I were to crawl under there or look under the hood.

Morning! New user here, but not new to car repairs. So due to one issue which we thought was the catalytic converter but it was really the ignition coil, we are now at a lovely junction of exhaust issues. We had already taken the old cat off and purchased a new one (Evan Fischer brand, if you're curious). But the flange on the exhaust manifold was too rusted for a proper seal with the gasket. If we buttoned her up from back to front, the exhaust leak was at the cat/manifold junction; from front to back both the cat/man junction and the cat/resonator junction had exhaust leaks. So I took the cat back off and was cleaning up the exhaust flange which was rather rusted to get a better seal on it. But with further inspection, I also noticed that the flange itself was degrading- just losing bits due to rust. I was planning on using some of that QuikSteel stuff to build it up a bit around the edges. But... Would it be in our best interest to remove the heat shield on the manifold to inspect the y-pipe itself? I think it would be. He's arguing with me about it. We've already replaced the resonator and muffler last fall due to them rusting and breaking. Both of those were replaced with Evan Fischer brand parts as well; the boyfriend had the forethought to get the same maker for the cat as he did previously. Thanks for your time. If you need pictures, just let me know and I'll take some. Rachel

So i have a 2008 legacy 2.5i non turbo, and am wondering if the flange sizes between the stock car are the same as the GTs or Spec B. I am looking for a cat back high flow system, and all I see are for the turbo models. I think the stock exhaust pipe for my car is 2.25in after the cat, and the GTs are 3in. I was hoping someone knew the difference between the flange size because I would like to put the 3in on. In the future I will replace the headers, down pipe and the cat pipe, but for starters a cat back will suffice. I do know that other cars may have different size exhaust pipes between different trims, but the flange size is the same. In this case, and hopefully my case you can potentially mix match the different exhaust pipes between trims. Thank you for any info on this matter, -Myles
