Hello all! My brat has been driving strange for awhile and I would like to fix it. While driving in any gear, The RPM's will shoot up if I open the throttle all the away and the car will not move faster. This can happen in any gear but its the worst in 3rd. I tried to replace the clutch a week ago but it was the wrong size clutch set, so I cleaned the assembly with brake cleaner and slapped it back together. The clutch that was already there didn't look to bad but the inside of the bell housing was covered in black sludge and grease (maybe gear oil). I just want some input on the situation before I separate the engine and tranny again. Thank you, Zosojojo

Hello All, I have never had a Subaru. I got my 2001 Subaru a couple of years ago. I have loved this car from the day I got it. Yesterday I was driving 75mph when I saw a crap load of smoke pouring out the back of my car. I started to notice the tranny slipping as I pulled over. I got under the car and saw tranny fluid pouring out of the bell-housing. I refilled the tranny but now it doesn't engage in any gear. It has 233,000 miles on it. I wanted to know if anyone has had similar issues with their tranny. Can it be saved? I didn't smell anything burnt in the tranny oil. Any suggestions on where I can find a good tranny? I am new here to this site. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Humbly Ed

Ok so my 1984 Wagon standard tranny is leaking a fair amount, (about two to three tablespoons every 24hrs i would guess) all the fluid is collecting around/on the drain plug and then it drips onto the exhaust pipe below. I have been regualry checking the dipstick and it is still saying its full, (I just redid the fluid) so thats a good thing. So far I have added STOPLEAK to combat the leaking but just in case that doesnt clear it up in the next few days does anyone else have any experience with these trannys and what to do when they leak?

Ok so I cant find anything in my two soobie owners manuals about it so I thought I would ask the awesome soobie geeks on the fourms about it. My question is, do the older gen subarus have a breather tube or a vent for the transmission? or is the dipstick hole the vent? And if they do have a vent where is it?

93 Legacy - New timing belt & water pump, Tune-up, Intake system cleaned, new filters etc. The car runs much better but still seems auto trans is sluggish. No real hard shifting or slipping but lacking umpf. I would like to change the fluid and filter screen & dont want to have a shop do it- prices are high, employee's are inexperienced, parts and performance lack workmanship & quality. I want to Drain the whole system not necessarily flush it, just get out all the old fluid out & replaced. I have searched on "how to do it yourself" & have a general idea of what to do. Take one of the trans cooler lines off to pump out the old fluid that isnt in the pan, Drain & remove pan then clean it out & remove old gasket material/residue, replace filter/screen gasket & trans pan, And refill with ATF. More or less this is the "How to" I found but very simplified. I think pumping/draining out of the cooler line would be done before the pan right? Would new fluid need to be added while pumping out so system doesnt run dry? I'd rather not run a bunch of new fluid in it just to throw it away. I would like to know if anyone has done a flush or drain the whole system at home & what procedure(with details) was used, problems or issues occurred, *lack of a better term* "Tricks"/techniques to use. What brand ATF is most commonly used by members? Any bad experiences with NAPA brand/Or similar ATF? What is a good way to clean trans out before adding new ATF? I was thinking about adding SeaFoam Trans Tune to help clean it out. Anyone used SeaFoam Trans Tune (not regular seafoam) before? Also read that Trans-X has been used & recommended by quite a few subaru owners in their auto's to help or prevent issues. Add SeaFoam Trans Tune drive a few miles, drain & replace with new fluid and Trans-X additive, what do you think? Any & All helpful information or ideas and opinions are appreciated, hope to get replies/responses ASAP, Thanks.

Can I put a 97 forester transmission in a 98 forester? They both are auto transmission and AWD. Sorry if it is a dumb question I'm not very knowledgeable on cars. I bought a 98 forester and I need to replace the transmission.

I just purchased my first subaru, '99 legacy GT AWD 2.5lt manual 5 speed tranny. My question is that it has a light to moderate grind going into third on both the up-shift and down-shift. Just wanted to see if anyone out there has come across this problem before and if so any solutions. I am farely mechanically inclined but I've never worked on or messed around with this type of vehicle (I have owned diesel trucks most of my life so I'm in unfamilier tarritory). Any help would be greatlu appreciated.

I've got a story and need some help. Here's the short version: 1998 OBW with 2.2L (swapped out 2.5L couple years ago). Auto transmission was slipping, and I decided to get it swapped locally. Hired a guy who essentially took my transmission out, installed another, test drove and said it was ready but just needed a drive shaft (?). I made the mistake of paying him for the tranny work. He returned a few days later to swap the drive shaft (while I was at work) and basically made a mess. He left the transmission in pieces and has abandoned the project leaving the parts in the back of the car and the transmission hanging from a couple of bolts. After consulting another mechanic, he confirmed the mess and showed me how the first guy destroyed the current transmission (or back half of the current transmission). My current option is to replace the current transmission, and I'm shopping for a used transmission that will work in this 98 OBW Limited that originally had a 2.5L but now has a 2.2L. My question: do I need to be looking for a specific model number transmission and or differential? Will any auto transmission from a 1998 2.2L donor work? Any info greatly appreciated.
