Today was the day to get on with some necessary engine work. The 150,000-mile EJ202 has been stuttering at low revs and generally felt sluggish. The PO told me that the CEL light came on every so often due to the plugs needing renewal. I quietly wondered why he hadn’t done it. The leads are brand new NGK, and the distributor has been replaced by an aftermarket one. Luckily the original Hitachi remained in a box in the trunk so I have reinstalled that one. I didn’t have to search for long to discover the spark plug problem. Oil on the lead boots is due to one thing; the plug tube oil seals in the rocker cover. The plugs were in a state. No.2 cyl: so here’s my process for changing the spark plugs and seals, and checking the valve clearance whilst the covers are off: 1. put the front wheels on blocks to get underneath. 2. Remove the under guard. 3. Remove the air intake assembly, Battery and screen wash bottle. 4. Give the area a good washing as dirt must not enter the open heads. 5. I drained the oil. I believe it is not necessary, but I wanted to change it anyway. 6. I also removed the radiator fans and coolant overflow to gain access to the crank pulley, to be able to rotate the engine 90 degrees at a time for the valve clearance service. Now we are about ready to get on with the job...

G'day everybody, First I'd just like to say , Great site, I have visited a couple of times over the past few weeks and found some really good info and advice from members helping others throughout these posts. Ok, so how did I get here. Well about a month ago I raced to an advertised 1998 Outback wagon, the pics showed quite a tidy car at about 1/3 to 1/4 of potential market value but the ad read that the owner thought it may have a blocked radiator. As soon as I arrive he comes out with the keys and then says he'd just come out to start it before I got there but it wouldn't start, he didn't know why and I sensed he was starting to play Possum and saying maybe because he'd reversed it onto the lawn where it was parked, slight incline nose down and wasn't sure where the fuel pickup was located as a possible reason for not starting. As I looked over the rest of the car he said it was running earlier that day, as he was flushing radiator and added fresh coolant, and apparently drove it to its current position. Supposedly it had overheated about a week prior but monitored since then and only just temp higher than normal but not critical. So one mans trash comes a Pir8s Treasure even though I knew he was playing possum and new more about it than he was making out, I was confident that I will be able to get it running still well under market value and end up with a good vehicle. Now I will continue in another forum and let you know where its at and put the feelers out for some of that good advice I mentioned earlier

i adjusted the valve clearance as set by factory specs before putting in the motor but after putting it in i think its off my dad went to give it a first start up and i heard a clunk inside and the belts slowed suddenly when i adjusted the clearance i was told by a few people to pull back the rocker and stick the filler gauge in and adjust until it moves freely but you can fill it slide inbetween slightly. so was i not supposed to pull back? addvice is apriated and a video of someone adjusting valve clearance on a subaru motor would be awesome.
