Hey, im Chris from Olympia, Wa. Just picked up a '89 xt6. Everything works awesome. It has 160xxx on the odometer. I got it for a great price, and drove it home. This thing is a lot of fun. I needed a winter car, and i think iv found the perfect one for me. Heres a few pics.

Awesome, thanks for the link. I was trying to find a xt board, but I guess I failed.
nah, you didn't fail, you found one and got the USMB too. they're both great boards, my personal favorites no doubt.

most of us are members of both boards, the XT group has more traffic from XT guru's if you need XT specific info.

Thanks. I picked it up pretty cheap, and I'm slowly fixing the problems I found. Tomorrow I'm going to check for engine codes. The check engine light is either unhooked, or broken. It runs a little strange, so I think a quick plug in will reveal the problem. I think its something along the lines of the TPS. I also need to put a new power steering pump in it(the car came with one).

Hey , i've got an 88 xt6 ,looks just like that - except for the ground clearence , has that one been lifted ? Or is that the air suspension max'd out ? My air ride was removed before i got it.

Sorry i didnt answer you. I beleive they are the original airbags, but the pump and stuff was removed. It has valve stem type fittings in the engine compartment and the trunk to raise and lower the car. The reason its so far up is because the cv's were clicking when it was lower. I might have to go take them off the xt at the local partsyard here.

when i said i'll take them off the other xt.
4 cylinder XT axles don't work in an XT6. make sure whatever you get is off a 6 cylinder XT6.

you mentioned you needed a new power steering pump. the pump doesn't need replaced, the brushes inside of it need replaced. they're less than $20. clean it up and replace the brushes. even if you have another pump it would be wise to clean it up and replace the brushes. very easy to do and cheap.

XT6 power steering pump takes a special XT6 only fluid.

Runs a little strange - it's your CTS connector, it looks old and original in the picture. Replace the connector. Replacing the CTS wont' fix it, the connection will just be green and nasty. Look in your engine bay picture in this thread. Just to the left and behind the alternator, it's *touching* the alternator in the picture, is a brownish sort of connector. That's your problem child.

You're welcome!

Wow, i went and looked at a perfectly fine looking connector, and when i pulled it off, it broke into 3 pieces. The inside of the connector was all green and corroded. When i tried cleaning it out(because its my daily car, and i need to drive it today) it just broke it more, so i just put two small crimp type spade connectors on the wires, and plugged them in. It runs a lot better now, it starts easier, and it runs smoother. It still has a slight misfire every once in a while, but i think thats due to a sparkplug grounding out somwhere(i can see spark on the outside of the plug). Thanks for the suggestion. You were right.

looks like I'm not the only one who thought the Firebird spoiler would look good on an XT6  Just don't open the trunk and then turn the car on, that's how I screwed up my antenna when it extended up, directly into the spoiler

I didn't even notice that, it looks stock.

I thought it was a fiero spoiler, maybe they are the same, and i have wanted to see how one would look on an xt.

  • 3 weeks later...

not that changeing axles is terribley difficult , but i personally wouldn't do all the work to put in axles from the salvage yard - odds are you'll be changeing them again very soon . hope this doesn't sound too hack - but i have got a bunch more miles out of stuffing some grease back in there and wrapping the boots with some construction grade cellofane - zipp ties - black electric tape , all wound in forward direction . super cheap fix - only temperary of course .
