bought a wagon, need a part now.. pics!!

Recommended Posts

bought an 88' gl wagon 4wd 3at today.. car has no rust, etc.. very nice..

no 3rd gear, so i got it home pulled the governor out. and the gear is so apple cored that it no longer turns.. the valve itself is on good shape and not binding in any way..

so my question is does the gear come off of the assembly and can it be replaced without replacing the hole thing, or do i need to just replace the hole thing?

next off, if i gotta replace the hole thing where can i get one?

third.. do any of you have a good one, i can give ya a few bucks for?

i need to poke my peepers in the hole sometime before hand.. but just by stickin my fingers in there the inside gear feels like it should.. not worn out or anything..

if it does need replaced how is that done? any easy way without pullin the tranny? cause if i gotta pull the tranny its going to be a 5-speed when it goes back together..

Gabe, are we talking about the same part -pictured below?

As this statement is very confusing to me

one each one i've change has had atf which it's not suppose to

They work by controling the flow of the AFT, that's what my FSM says.

Please explain and correct me if I am mistaken

Tony... my governor gear is installed in a transmission which is out of the car. Would take me 5 minutes to get it out. Before I changed the tranny I pulled the governor and looked at it, and it's good. When the tranny was installed in the car it shifted BEAUTIFULLY- best shifting Subaru auto I'd ever driven. I canned the trans because it had horrible gear whine from inside the diff.

pics of what i need.. this just pulled out of the housing around it.. the housing is the part held in with the 2 8mm bolts.. dunno if it was supposed to pull out or not.. it pratically fell out thats how easy it was to pull outa the housing..

A diff that cores a Gov that bad will core another one. Cant tell you how long it will last, after my 2nd one they only lasted about 60mi. And its really hard to tell how bad the shaft is inside unless you pull the diff apart. Altho splitting the diff off the tranny isnt that hard, its just a pain pulling the tranny period (this I do know).

Gabe, if your still reading, was yours worn like the one Meeky showed?

The reason I asked is mine (I wrote the USRM article) would not "just slide out "

Shame on me for thinking, it always gets me into trouble

But could what ever holds the gov to the plate that has the 8 mm bolts get loose and allow the gear to mesh improperly thus causing the coring?

Mine shows no signs of this wear pattern and I had to remove said bolts to remove the unit.

I do not think it makes a diff but mine was a turbo.

Plus I also stand (sit) corrected, it appears that the drive worm gear is in the diff (makes sense) and that end would have gear oil on it.

The main operational part where the cleaning and deburring take place are in ATF these are separated by the seals seen clearly in Meeky's picture.

Just a thought and some miscellaneous rambling by an old fart, please return to your normal channel at this time.

All the ones that I've pulled at the junkyard were non- turbo and they all just slid out. The one my mother's driving, went through two, and the third one has lasted over 100k miles now. The reason the first two went, was because someone had changed the front diff oil with a t f.

If that helps any!?!

Meeky Moose- have you checked the front diff oil?

naw, i'm thinkin someone had it flushed at a spiffy lube and it got screwed up.. there is 0 gear oil in there. like its been drained and refilled with atf.. and its full to the mark, same with the trans.. fluid is real new as well, cause it smells new, and looks new..

at any rate, i'll keep the seal in mind, just incase it fills up with tranny fuild again, lol..
