Andy FitzGibbon
To keep the on demand 4WD, you will have to keep the DL transmission, which means you will have to use a bellhousing adapter to fit the 2.2 engine to it. Andy
The Dude Abides
If your just swaping engines, you get an adaptor plate and keep your original transmission (single range) from your dl car. If your swaping engine and tranny then it gets a bit more complicated. I believe you half to change front axels to match the ones in your new tranny. I think your asking if you can switch in a awd tranny but still keep your single range transfer case. If thats what your asking then we have a problem. The 4wd unit in these cars is 1 piece. You either have single range, or dual range, awd or just 2wd. If the tranny is still good in your wagon i would just get the adaptor plate and call it good. Though if you had alittle xtra bucks i would get the dual range setup. Superior with the low range option.
s1l3ntr4ge
im not sure what it is i believe its dual range. 2wd 4hi 4lo and i have a 4 speed tranny and its just not enough gear and the tranny has over 304,000 miles on it so how effective would rebuilding it be? so what your saying is that the engine is no problem theres adapters to make it fit the original tranny but if i want to put in a 5spd tranny and still keep my dual range it has to be a 4wd dual tranny? Greenley
DL wagon's were made for what, at least 10 years, through three different generations. More specific info is needed for anyone to assist ...

Greenley
Awesome. You would use the 5spd dual range transmission out of a 3rd gen vehicle, and mate that to the 2.2 via an adapter plate. There is a TON of info about this swap on here, search "EJ22 Swap" and you'll find 370 posts to dig through on this topic.
