3WD anyone?

Recommended Posts

have had an issue with the LHS DOJ on my Brumby (EJ22 &RX FT 4WD 5Sp)...it poped the circlip of the end of the shaft....which let the ball cage slip off the end of the shaft (stripping the spline for good measure)...this all happened while fully loaded with most of my worldly possesions and towing a trailer with two motorbikes on it 600 kilometers(about450 miles) from home....while coming down a mountain pass under engine braking in 2nd, and slowing down for a 35km/h corner.

i thought the clutch had let go suddenly...but the grumble from up the front and total lack of drive had me looking under the bonnet as soon as i could pull over..... left hand doj had a torn boot an the axle just looked like it was sitting in the wrong place....put it in gear with the handbrake on an the cup turned.... but the shaft stayed stationary:mad:

then i remembered i had a center difflock:headbang:.....flipped the switch an made it home....then had to cut the front axles off at the hubs and remove them so i could go back and pickup the rest of my stuff...lol in RWD:burnout:

anyone else had a DOJ grenade like this?

Yes I have. when it happened it jammed the axle from turning, put me in the ditch. thank god I was in 2wd when it happened. I put it in 4 low, backed up onto the road and went forward/reverse a few times WOT and it snapped it completely off, climbed under the car ripped the rest of the shaft out and drive home in RWD.

I had an outer joint on a front axle do that on my lifted wagon. I just put in 4WD and kept going. Rather than being on some trail or other messy place, the damn thing gave out turning out onto a street from a gas station . It was one of the original 2WD axles from before the car was converted to 4WD. The inner race split and the axle shaft spun inside it.
