Indrid cold
EA-82, 88 wagon. The kid (family relation) stopped by yesterday, I could hear and feel a vibration and Buzz.. coming from the engine.... I took my 3/8" plastic plumbing supply tube that I use as a stethascope to listen around and his Alternator is Buzing.. sounds like a bee-hive that just got poked by a stick.... it is also sending a vibration into the car that can be felt... I thought it was the fuel pump vibrating at first as it is very high speed/short wave length frequency kind of thing... It did not sound like a usuall bearing going out (grinding, thunking etc...) or loud.... nor evident from the front or back of the alt... the whole thing just kind of buzz's... Figure the alt. will be short lived as something is wrong ...... you can put your hand on it and feel the "Buzz"... ever hear of something like this? Loyale 2.7 Turbo
Yes... Not only a Worn Ball Bearin` can make that Sound, but a Extremly Dry Ball Bearin` Too... I Kindly Suggest you to Tell him that is Better Idea to Take Out that Alt and Check it, `cos it might be More than Just a Ball Bearin` Noise; it could be a Broken Part inside the Alt, that Might Lead to More Problems if Leaved Unattended. Kind Regards.
Cougar
See if you can measure any AC voltage across the battery while the engine is running. If there is more than .1 AC volt then replace the alternator soon.
