rverdoold Posted October 17, 2009 Share Posted October 17, 2009 I have a 1.6 MT 5sp 1999 impreza and would like to install cruise control and keyless entry. For the cruisecontrol: Going to choose for an electric system since this will eliminate the vacuum system. However I will have to install a clutch switch, a computer and a button. However i also need a VSS (speed sensor). I suppose this car has an electronic VSS (since i could not find any tachocable from gearbox. So where can i find the VSS cable. Or is this one free in the wireharnass (can i assume that if the harnass has CC in there the VCC cable is indeed connected to the VCC, or would i have to take the signal from the ECU). Installing a clutch switch will not be the biggest problem, and for the brake signal can i tap the the current brake switch cable or should i install an additional switch? For the keyless entry: I was planning to get a simple system (from ebay). However i have read that the drivers door is not a motor only an actuator. Meaning i would have to replace the driversdoor actuator to an actuator/motor! are these aftermarket actuator/motors standard shaped or brand depended (like http://www.emiata.com/images/2WireActuator.JPG or http://www.thetwistergroup.com/store/image.php?imagefile=D%3C%3E524N.JPG) Or is there a 2wire actuator present in the 1999 car also if they were not fitted with keyless entry system. Seems simple, however over here Subaru is not a popular brand and finding one at a scrapyard is similar as searching for the needle in the haystack. They are Very rare over here. rverdoold Posted September 7, 2010 Author Share Posted September 7, 2010 Waking up an old thread Ok thinking of getting an aftermarktet cruisecontrol system. Installing the actuator and electronics seems quite easy. + some wires at brake and clutch pedal. However i need a speed signal! I can wire a cable to an axle and put a magnet around the axle to determine a speed signal. (included in the cruise kit). However is there any cable i can use that gives a speed signal. If your trans has a speedometer cable that spins the back of the speedometer head it usually generates the signal there. Here we sometimes refer to it as speed sensor 2 because many of ours are electronic, signal generated by the tranny and send to the speedo. If your trans has a speedometer cable that spins the back of the speedometer head it usually generates the signal there. Here we sometimes refer to it as speed sensor 2 because many of ours are electronic, signal generated by the tranny and send to the speedo. If you have a cable driven speedometer, the VSS is in the speedometer/odometer housing. If you don't have a cable driven speedometer (LCD display of mileage), the VSS should be a small unit on the transmission where the cable originated on the earlier models. rverdoold Posted September 8, 2010 Author Share Posted September 8, 2010 With my 91 legacy there was a cable comming from the 4eat/front diff, this one i used to grease from time to time with graphite and bit of oil. But now there is just a cap sitting. So i assume the speed is measured at an other place. I was thinking that there might be wires from the ecu to a possible cruise ecu which will be not used since i do not have cruise control. But on this cable should be a VSS (at least i think so). The brands i can get over here are Waeco (is quite good company) and john gold (a dutch supplier of most likely chinese made material). It is fine to install but just the idea that i will have to mount a magnet and a reader on one of the drive axles does not suite me. However i think i will be able to take the signal (it is just 12v pulses i think) from the gearbox if i can find the VSS (or pulsegenerator) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
rverdoold Posted September 8, 2010 Author Share Posted September 8, 2010 (edited) Ok figured out something: VSS 1 is mounted on the back of the gearbox. VSS 2 is mounted on the front but not in every country. (looking in wiring diagram shows vss2 is conected via the door system but not in europe). Cruise control module connector B94 should be located in front left footwell. Will check if that is true this weekend. there should be a 20 pin connector. However i count 18 in the haynes manual for the legacy. But that shows it should be a green/black wire somewhere on the side of the connector. I think the cables will be 'hot' because it is just a pulse signal. Or might there be a cable behind the radio, which is used to turn the radio louder with the speed if supported.
