Jibs
Here is what I've spent my summer working on: Details: 1983 GL Brat EJ22 from 90 legacy RX FT4WD Transmission 5 lug swap using xt6 front knuckles, 93 impreza AWD struts, xt6 rear bits Here's the solenoid for the RX tranny - It IS easier to hook up than I thought. I had to see ho Dave did it to make sense of it though. This pic shows what was done to the top portion of the impreza strut to make the ea81 top hat fit. We had to grind a flat spot on the threaded part and it seems to work real well. Everything went in real smooth, just a minor problem with the adapter plate not matching all the way up (Not anyone's fault, I got the first ever prototype from a friend of mine) and everything else went in real well. I'm still having issues with it running smooth, but we think it could be a vacuum leak and its been too cold and poopy for me to get motivated enough to get out there and get it done. bobjr94
Had a chance to take it out ? Was wondering what kind of mileage an ej would get in a 2300 lb car
Numbchux
awesome project! what control arms and axles did you use? Had a chance to take it out ? Was wondering what kind of mileage an ej would get in a 2300 lb car the RX trans will hurt it a bunch (very low 5th gear, and moving parts of FT4WD), but it should be pretty sweet. crockettbrat
Had a chance to take it out ? Was wondering what kind of mileage an ej would get in a 2300 lb car My eh brat with d/r 5 speed indicates about 23-25 mpg depending on how I drive. I'm running 27" tires so the odometer is reading low. I'm sure the big wheels and tires hurt the mileage too. Daniel
monstaru
retrofitting ea81 top hats can also be done by filing the flat spot on the strut top to be round:).there are nio adverse effects of the strut shaft itself turning . looks good JB!cheers, brian
TheSubaruJunkie
Have you figured everything out now with the engine idle and whatnot? Let me know when you wanna drive this thing down to Sacramento
Jibs
I used the ea81 control arms reamed a bit to use the xt6 ball joint. Haven't gotten a chance to work out the front axle issue as of yet. I will be running in RWD for the time being. I am looking into seeing if Rockford CV can build me custom axles. awesome project! what control arms and axles did you use? the RX trans will hurt it a bunch (very low 5th gear, and moving parts of FT4WD), but it should be pretty sweet. LPGsuperchargedBrumby
Hows the front camber with the XT6 hubs?....is it still \...../ ? or does the slotted mounting holes in the Imp struts allow you straighten them up?
Jibs
i haven't figured that out yet. I was hoping to get it to drive down the street to the pavement but so far I am still having troubles getting it to start. It was WAY off when I installed the knuckles and stuff, and we adjusted it so that it looks as straight as its going to be for now, but I am surwe its going to need spme sort of alignment before i drive it a lot. As of now I swapped out the IAC and it didn't seem to do a whole lot. The next thing I will do is get a short video of it and what it does and throw it up on youtube so that we can diagnose it. subieman
Hey JB, any updates on the Brat? I never seem to make it on the board anymore. Is it still not running right after you cleaned the gas tank? Happy Thanksgiving!
Jibs
Not much going on with the Brat, I got my fans hooked up, the third eye on, and am in the process of putting the chrome bumpers on. Its still missing, I have to get a friend of mine over and see whats wrong with it. i just haven't been motivated to work on it any more. I DO need to get it done before winter hits though. Jibs
Progress has been slow as of late, the Brat still doesn't run, but hopefully soon. I've been doing a little bit to keep myself into this project. The Brat started as a 3eat and I didn't see this (or maybe I did and ignored it,) but these are the supports that need to be replaced when swapping over to a manual trans: I went ahead and used an ea82 power steering coupler when I converted to power steering and it seems to work just fine. I don't like the idea of that rubber boot coupler after having the bolts rip out after blowing an axle and having the axle grease spew over it in my lifted brat. I've been doing a little work on getting the fans hooked up, and while doing that, I am installing the 3rd eye and also a chrome bumper from an 82 wagon. The slim fan I picked up for 20$ on ebay fits GREAT behind the 3rd eye, its real close but it fits. This is what I did as far as reducing the fuel lines between the ej/ea. I think it was about 5.50$ for the parts.
Jibs
Also when doing the auto/manual swap, The auto trans tunnel in the brat is different than manuals. I had to cut a bit to get the shifter to fit, This pic is still in process. I am working on getting a 1-piece driveline and then I'll have more room for the shifter. Another issue is on the 4wd shifter mount. The 3eat has a pushbutton 4wd selector and as such, the mounting plate for the 4wd is non-existent. I thought maybe that all brats had the same mounting hardware but it appears not. Here's the area where the plate should be, I didn't think of taking a pic of the 4wd brat to compare but I will soon. (This is the driver's side tranny tunnel area near the underside of the front of the seat) Random Pic of the jump seats, that are bolted to the bed, so that I can remove them if needed. Here's a nice shot of the brat so far:
Jibs
A good pic of the clearance of the ej22 in the ea81 chassis: Does anyone know where this hose goes? Passenger side above the window washer resevoir. Goes into the firewall below. Its capped with a screw?? Rear shot of the Brat, The bumper is getting replace with a chrome bumper from the wagon. When replacing bumpers between brats and wagons, note that the actual mounting bracket is longer on the brats and needs to be swapped. One bolt fits between them, but I didn't think it was enough and I want this Brat to be as close to original (Ha!) as I can get.
monstaru
what up bro!i hate running troubles, i have scrapped cars because of it! i think, THINK that hose is a vacuum actuator hose for the vent setup on the hvac.THINK i said:grin:.....pretty sure though.almost every car i have ever had with that hose , i plugged into vacuum.pretty sure , but not a 100 %... hope all is well besides this , cheers, brian

mountaingoatgruff
Nice Brat, I'm diggin the 5 lug swap! Yeah - that hose is the vac supply for the hvac exactly like monstaru said, should have a check valve on it. Jibs
So would not that havingit connected have anything to do with it not running? I have a few T connectors that I can splice into other vac lines.
TheSubaruJunkie
JB, if you plan on putting a Wagon bumper on your Brat, you might have problems opening your tailgate.
martimus919
Crazy I'm doing the exact same swap right now in my brat. How was putting the shifting linkage together? I just got my trans to fit in last night after hours of pounding on the tunnel to give the trans clearance and notice i don't have alot of room for the linkage. You shouldn't have to pound the tunnel at all. Check into the 5speed kit that BratsRus1 sells - Its worth its weight in gold. On that note I have a question. Are xt6 axles and ea82T axles the same spline count? 25 Spline, correct? I need to send some axles off to get fixed to work in the brat and have some ea82T axles already pulled, but have access to xt6 axles.
