Myxalplyx
Are there any of you guys here in the Northeast (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania) are that rebuilds old school Subaru engines? I'm talking ridding the engine of oil leaks and power loss through pistons rings and such with new, machined or remanufactured parts? Thanks! GeneralDisorder
If your just talking rebuilding, and not customization, then CCR is your best bet: http://www.ccrengines.com/ I hear from many board members that it's cheaper to buy from them, than to do it yourself. This of course doesn't apply if you intend to add custom ground cams, or the like, since they will not do that. They will build an EA81 with EA71 pistons, and a Brat cam that with a Weber should push 100 HP or so, since these are all subaru parts.... They do ALL subaru engines - old and new I think - check out their page. GD
PHATBRAT
It's really not that difficult. You should do it yourself and have 1 or 2 people come help you if needed. I always have a second or 3rd set of eyes when I do stuff. Get yourself a FSM. You will learn and have fun as you go. I would offer to help but as it stands right now, I cannot even find enough time for my wife/kids/projects I already have. If you get stuck, ask the board until you understand. Worse case scenario, pay someone else or buy another engine.
svxpert
what engine do you want to re-build? why does it need piston rings? did you run it without oil or overheat it? i've never seen a suby engine with bad rings before with just regular wear and tear. svxpert
we just rebuilt a EA82T engine and its sitting on my bench looking for a home. i'm just waiting for parts to come in for a ER27 rebuild for my XT-6.
Snowman
"i've never seen a suby engine with bad rings before with just regular wear and tear." I've got an ea82 with bad rings in one cylinder. It was a used japanese import engine, and I put 20,000 miles on it, none of which I would consider abuse, always keeping the oil up and never overheating it. Somehow, the rings failed and that cylinder has half the compression of the others. The only other thing wrong with the motor is an occasional lifter tick. Probably an isolated incident, but proof that it does happen. That's why I'm being extra careful and am in the process of totally rebuilding the original engine that came in the car. NoahDL88
even with the 1600 pistons and a custom cam from Delta Cams they are still very competitive. i'm waiting on mine as we speak, should be here any day now
svxpert
<<I've got an ea82 with bad rings in one cylinder.
