RebelYJ
Well i really appreciate everything this forum has provided as it got my brat running! Runs great just needs to be timed and should be great. however it won't stay alive long enough to get warmed up to time it. The issue I have is the ignition fuse. I have a 15A in it, and it will start right up. however after about a min or so...you can see the fuse burning up then pow fuse gone...and the car stumbles and dies... I have been looking at the wiring diagrams, check for shorts, and just don't see what could keep causing this. And for reference this is the fuse with black to blue-white wire, that comes from the ignition switch. Everything else seems good, anyone have any pointers? Btw it a 81' Brat GL EA81 with hitachi coil and disty... Just also found out, doesn't even matter if the car is running. If the switch is on then the fuse blows shortly there-after. Must be a short somewhere, but I'm lost as to where to start looking... Edited October 20, 2009 by RebelYJ
RebelYJ
Found out it was the ignition wire to the coil. Just required to much I guess. hooked it up to a relay and all it good as far as the fuse blowing. But the motor still dies after about a minute... RebelYJ
Thanks for the help everyone, but I figured it out. Carb just needs a good rebuild...the throttle cable is all messed up and so is the automatic choke. But after that gets cleaned up, all should be cool beans! Cougar
Something is drawing too much current. Cleaning the carburator isn't going to stop that trouble. There may be a problem with the coil. Try disconnecting the plus wire to the coil and keep the wire from touching anything. Then turn on the ignition and see if the fuse tries to blow then. If it doesn't then you need to check out the ignition area for a problem. If you have an electric choke that could be the trouble so try disconnecting it also. RebelYJ
Thanks for the tip. Yea yesterday I ended up trying that. Disconnected the wire and low and behold the fuse didn't blow. When i had what would've been that ignition wire +12v wired straight from the battery the motor ran fine (won't idle) and the fuse didn't even get hot. So I already plan on installing a few relays and 'hidden' switches. But as far as the carb rebuild goes, its nasty and just clogged with grease all around it. The choke is way messed up and need to just clean it out and if it is really broken, just get a j/y one and rebuild that. The car will die if I don't have my foot on the gas and the throttle cable is already wacked haha. just gotta keep at the little projects that keep popping up! Cougar
Since disconnecting the coil cleared the trouble that means the trouble is either with the coil or something on the other side of it is causing trouble. by bypassing the fused circuit to the coil you are defeating the protection the fuse gives. You should find out what the real problem is and fix it. Bypassing the fuse can bring on real trouble later. The coil may have some shorted windings so replacing it may solve the trouble. RebelYJ
Yes, very true. If i'm going to fix it, might as well do it right the first time. I'll take a look at it more tomorrow and see what I can find out. It's either that, yes the coil is in specs but still bad, the igniter box or whatever you call it is toast, or the tach... Hopefully it's nothing to serious as I don't have much money left to spend to get the brat road worthy...
