Dickensheets
Morning. I'm not sure what the wheel well will accept on that year but on my 97 the OEM size is 205/70/15. I choose to run 225/60/15 because to me it looks better and it handles much better due to more footprint and less sidewall. This is on dry pavement of course. It also has a slightly smaller diameter which improves acceleration at my 5000ft elevation here in colorado. Google tire size calculator and play with some numbers to see what will fit. porcupine73
The limiting factor in this application may be the clearance between the tire and the lower strut spring seat.

Dickensheets
yes so whats the max size? Go out and take some measurements. How tall is current tire, how much space to work with, this will give you some idea. Tire size calculators will tell you how tall and wide any given tire is. Twitch de la Brat
I've got 185 75 R14's and they rub when I turn. They're one size taller than stock, so stock may very well be the size you're looking for. But, my struts are shot and leaking. So if you have better struts, you may be able to fit a bigger tire. imprezaII
This may or may not help , but 94 Dodge shadow 15 " alloys fit on my 96 Impreza and they sit outward from the hub about 1" more than the factory 15 rims. This may give you more space away from the bottom of the strut cone shape and also keep it from rubbing the inner fender areas.

Fairtax4me
The legacy outback wagons run 205/70/15 tires. I would imagine they have room for more because of the lifted suspension. I wonder if you could make a set of outback struts work on your older wagon? :-p

The Beast I Drive
Scott, You lifted a Gen 1 Legacy Sedan. I think you know how big a tire you can put on there But in all seriousness, I have no clue. Im not into the Legacy/OB stuff yet. With some wheel spacers though Im sure you can get around that spring perch issue... -Bill
Leg91LS
Maybe this will help but I have a 91 Lego LS and I have 20560R15 that fit perfectly without any rubbing. I'm not sure if someone else mentioned this same size tire on a 1st Gen.
beefwagon
I just put on 225/65/16 "s some rubbing with 98 ob struts 02 forester springs and 98 ob control are brackets and there is slight rubbing but after a few cuts and bangs they fit just fine, any bigger would probably not work without a body lift. anyone have good pics or ideas on how to finish of wheel wells and fenders after cutting, im going to weld steel plates to strenghten the frame wher i cut but some experienced advise would help
