Olskoolrodder
I'll be getting into a clean,1 owner low milage '99 OB Sport soon, and was just wondering where I could find some bolt-ons for it (exhaust/intake,chips,etc). I'm assuming it has the 2.2L engine, but really not sure. Where would be a good place to start, upgrades for looks and a little better performance with dependability and a strict budget (which should open up sometime next year) in mind? bheinen74
should be the ej22 interference block. 99 Impreza Sport wagons had that engine, but in 00 they went to the ej25 i believe.

GeneralDisorder
There isn't much you can do on the phase-II EJ22's - Subaru pretty much maxed them out already. The Phase-I EJ22 was 135 HP, and the Phase-II is 147 HP. You could do exhaust and intake but don't expect more than 5 HP. Maybe 10 HP and some added torque if you invested in a set of cams. If you want real power, you are going to have to look into turbo-charging it or swapping it out for a turbo engine. But that's not a "strict budget" kind of thing at all. The EJ22's will handle low-boost (5 lbs max) all day long and it pushes them into the stock WRX performance range pretty easily. 200 HP isn't out of the question on a low-boost, high comp. EJ22. Olskoolrodder
That's what I was afraid of,LOL! Well, exhaust and intake (like a home-made short ram K&N type deal) and a chip if I can find one will have to do. I don't wanna mess with the cams till it's off the "daily driver" status (also a possibilty next year...once I get approved for Disability/SSI...hey,not lazy,I broke my neck in two places a few years back, and payed in for over 21 years ),we'll be possibly looking at a new Forrester for a family car,and I'll be buying a mini truck to slam/daily drive,so I may seriously look into pulling this one off the road and doing some more major mods like a turbo kit,or better,a swap to an engine with much more potential. I dig sleepers Thanks for the info,Bro. Here's a few pics of it (I walked down to their house and shot em a few minutes ago)...
GeneralDisorder
Always liked the front-end on those. Probably one of my favorite looks along with the bug-eye WRX's. Nice score - looks like it needs a manual swap GD
Olskoolrodder
I always said "An automatic is a waste of a good car"...especially when owning and driving Rigs with as many as 18 speed double overdrive's,but alas...the wifey is manual ignorant (and has proven an inability, and has no desire to learn),and will be driving it on occasion,so as much as I'd LOVE to swap it out, doesn't look like it ,at least so long as it's in daily driven, not project car, state  Yeah,me too (the front end) Hey,if you look closely, you can see my Grandma's current ride hangin out of the garage...not to sound morbid (I'd rather keep my Grandma, but realistically, she's over 80 this year :-\),but unless she up and trades for a new one before she passes on,that'll be mine when that day comes (and if she does,I'm gunna talk her into a new WRX STi ). GeneralDisorder
Talk her into an STi and you'll have her Outback, a Wrecked STi, and a closed casket service. Count yourself lucky - mine is 90 and I got her Buick ...... and the house with the two-car garage that she kept it in GD
Olskoolrodder
Well you can't knock gettin the mancave (garage) outta the mix I really wish we'd bought a place with a garage. But I ain't complaining, all my neighbor's are at least in their 70's,and I plan to buy it up as it comes "available",so sooner or later,we'll own the entire mtn,LOL! And mine's put up with me (and in the past...that was a LOT) for 17 years last month,so I guess I can act "trained" for the most part,LOL!
Olskoolrodder
Man,as I walked passed my old Escort wagon knowing it'd be tomorrow before I even getta look to see which brake line popped, then the 1/2 mile down the hollow to the bus stop with my kids a few minutes ago,I watched our breath steam outta our mouths (it's about 31 degrees),and looked over at my Grandma's at the Sube, thinking about the heat it would put out on a morning like this...sure would be nice if the tax fair would come early,LOL! GeneralDisorder
Not 31 degree's here yet, but looks like I'm going to be working in a cold garage this winter. Don't think I'll be able to afford to heat it much. I would like to install a small wood-stove, but it's finding the time to do it more than anything that's going to be hard. I guess it's time to invest in long-underwear again GD
Olskoolrodder
LOL,I hear ya! As for the wood stove,my Pops is coming over tomorrow sometime so we can install one in our house...been sitting there strapped to a dolly for 2 weeks now,but we were all too down with that friggin pig flu
98obster
Nice OBS. imho, the 4eat is better in snow and the AWD system is better with the auto. I don't miss shifting at all especially in 5 mph traffic. I replaced the front seats in my 98 OBS with 02 wrx wagon stuff, the rears is not a perfect fit but can be done as well. I've done more for comfort and ride quality than trying to increase power. although I did put in a Perrin Lightened crank pulley, 2.5 inch axle back and removed the intake plenum for the ebay short ram (with the stock air filter). Oh, and forester springs and struts and center diff lock, primitive 1/8 skidplate and OE rear diff protector. Whiteline front enlinks and rallitek rear adjustable swaybar kit. front and rear strut towers. ha, pretty much done all I'm gonna do. now onto the 97 outback. GeneralDisorder
the 4eat is better in snow and the AWD system is better with the auto. That's true for the AWD cars - the 4EAT is capable of locking into 50/50 torque split like a true 4WD. The 5 speed's can't do this although they generally are more fun to drive. The new 6 speed's can with the DCCD though and they are really the ultimate Subaru transmission for stock-height rigs - stronger too. If it's snow capability you are after - the 4WD 5 speed D/R can't be beat. Unfortunately not a simple fit into the OBS. GD
Olskoolrodder
I've always done OK in the snow with front drivers,so ths OBS will be a big improvement anyways. Being honest...I'm not 25 years old anymore (closer to 40 than 30,LOL),so as much as my first instinct is "MORE POWER!!!",in truth,I'll want a few more ponies (especially since it's automatic),but I'm more interested in having that "look and sound",but dead reliable like a close-to-stocker. BUT (funny how there's always one there, huh? LOL!),should this car find itself in a "3rd car" non-depended-on-daily-driver position,I can see myself looking for a totalled out WRX STI with a good drivetrain/computer...I also can see myself looking for a good used blue or black 2.5RS once back to normal (financially) too,I really liked those. The Scooby
well you can do a header, and cat-back exhaust, it will gain a few HP and TQ but you will also get better MPG. intake's on these don't honestly do much, and there is no chip for them but there is the Perfect Power 6 which is what im gonna put in one of my N/A scoobies. but you can always do what i did, change out the auto and 2.2 to all MY02 WRX stuff. Olskoolrodder
That's the plan IF it ever gets from daily driver to project stage . I was talking to a friend at a hi-po shop (who's done some similar work for me in the past on a Mach I and Eclipse Spyder GT) about some possible port 'n pollish work as well. I guess I don't need to get ahead of myself tho...first things first,I gots to wait for the tax refund to get it in my driveway, and it's budget (and coincidently, how serious I get with it) depends heavily on when I ever get Disability/SSI approval (cause with it,our income will be about $3100 per month with hardly any bills by then, right now,we're sitting around $1350 per month for the 4 of us-funny,for 21 years,4 of which was serving during/just after Desert Storm, the Gov held it outta my check BEFORE I got paid, but they expect me to beg for food for 2 years waiting to get approval :-\).
