Sonicfrog
Well it's that time again for Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag. Just changed the plugs, disty cap and crappy rotor with the hold-on screw (what a crappy design that is). Amazing how much better it runs after I do that. Gonna take it out on the freeway then go to the smog station. Wish me luck.

Sonicfrog
Woo Hoo!!!!! Passed with flying colors!!!! I was worried, as the 94 Alpine wagon failed and I had to replace the O2 sensor and a few other things to get it to pass. TheSubaruJunkie
I love hearing good news in threads like this. I dread smog time, luckily for me my Brat isnt due for another test until 2011!!! Hopefully by then it'll have a EJ22 in it. GRATZ on your passing!!!!

TheSubaruJunkie
It gets harder and harder to own a EA81 & EA82 in california every year. Not only do we have to put up with smog, but our smog tests are run on a dyno. It has to pass under load at 25mph and 50mph. You fail one test, you fail them both. If you have an AWD subaru things are different...

My problem here has never been passing them (with subaru's at least)... it's been the idiot techs breaking my vehicles on idle tests (ones older than 1981 -- they bent the tailpipe on one truck and melted all of the wiring to the back lights, which blew the fuse to all lights in the whole truck.... great). akc
I used to live in grass valley and it was always hard to get our then 1980 subaru to pass smog. I am so glad to live in WA now. the smog is better and where I recently moved I do not have to deal with it at all (YET, fingers crossed). I do feel very sorry for folks that have too. Things are catching up here though so it probably will not be long. but for now my subie can smog all it wants too. but with Gregoire in office here it will not be long. Good thing you passed. TeamCF
Got it coming up here in the next couple months as well. If only I lived on the other side of the HWY. Or a block down the road I'd be exempt. Same county, the line is drawn by address out here. I know I need a new cat. Maybe more.

AWD Dyno's are not cheap. Smog shops are not willing to spend the extra money on the equipment if they are not going to get extra money for an AWD test. Remember, this is California. My God! You've not finished yet!!!! The tranny has worked fine, has done us justice for the price (thanx again). The inner bearing had become noisier in the last few months, to the point where I was starting to look around for another tranny. But we took a long trip a few weeks ago, and when we got back, I realized the noise was not nearly as loud. It's still there, but now barely detectable... either that, or I'm going deaf!!! Sonicfrog
Remember, this is California. What do they need AWD for here???Hey! We went to Yosemite last month. Most cars were getting turned away, we got in. Why? Because they had a freak snow storm, and they were only letting in AWD's! It was very cool too. I had never been to the park during a snow storm. It was phenomenal. Here's a couple of pics:
Ricearu
I live in Fort Worth Texas and we have dyno emissions testing, but we only have 2wd dyno's. The inspectors around here hardly ever see Subaru's and usually the dumbaas conclusion in the population is that all Subaru's are AWD and turbo charged. I just stick mine in 4HI and tell them its stuck in. It's really convincing if you do it before you get there and bind up the drive line a little before he road tests it  sometimes the idiots don't even ask, they just two speed idle test them. Happened to my friend josh with his fwd impreza Edited November 5, 2009 by Ricearu

TheSubaruJunkie
I have been plenty of places in California where I have needed my Subarus 4WD. I live 2hrs from lake Tahoe, and make it a point to visit frequently. My point was, smog shops see more lexus, mercedes & bmw here than subaru's. Of course, my brat is FWD so it still gets the Dyno treatment. My primary concern is when the tech pulls the car onto the dyno, and sets the e-brake, then tries to get the car up to 25 >;\ Edited November 5, 2009 by TheSubaruJunkie
