9098
I'm in the research phase for a used SVX. What are the big items to look out for? HG, Wheel Bearings, Diff, parts, etc. The search function did not yeild much. Thanks
bheinen74
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/ they did not have any head gasket issues, the one in 500 cars if not properly cared for may have had a hg issue, othersiwe that eg33 is pretty much a longevity king similar to the gen1 ej22 engine. bearings on the rear struts that get weak (heavy car) transmissions that go out all the time windshields that are pricey (1.2k plus, they have a titanium coating in them) early models had alarm system failures of the security brain droopy visors climate control that is finicky at times parts that are not hard to get, but hard to change, most shops do not have the expertise to correctly fix anything on these cars. etc. Edited November 3, 2009 by bheinen74
9098
Great link! Thanks. Why the heck did Subaru only offer it as an Automatic?
nipper
Great link! Thanks. Why the heck did Subaru only offer it as an Automatic? Because it was a luxury grand touring car, and in the early 90's those kind of cars did not come with a manual shift. Windshields cost an arm and a leg and something else you are fond of. Be leery of any SVX with its original transmission. Any odd shifting it will need a tranny (best fix is swapping in a legacy tranny and rear diff). Expensive fix is having the original tranny rebuilt to correct the issue at a proper rebuilder. Rear wheel bearings nipper
9098
Last question..Performance wise, how does it stack up to a Legacy GT. I was not impressed with the bang for the buck when I compared my cousin's 08 GT to my 05 base Legacy. It was quicker, but not enough to justify the huge price difference. My old 1990 could almost keep up with it. (Weight I suppose).
idosubaru
Being an automatic it's not likely to feel fast. If you're looking for a cheap one...i'd take that to mean poorly maintained, poorly running, and a 10-15 year old auto trans. But they are great motors with some decent stats. If you want actual numbers look up the 0-60 times and compare them, they can be found online. I believe you'll find the SVX stacks up pretty good and has better numbers than any EJ25 vehicle. And I would guess it has better numbers than the newer H6 (of which I own one). Great car - minus the parts headache, cost and finding them. I posted on multiple forums for a friend.. a throttle position sensor I think and never found one. Windshields crazy expensive, trans, and wheel bearings. If you do alot of cruising or freeway driving, this is a excellent car. Once you get up to speed, its like you're rolling on a cloud (unless you put low profile tires on like I did). The car comes alive at 80mph and there are plenty of reports of speeds in the 150mph range. *Disclaimer* I do not advise doing this in a older car and take no responsibility for the actions of others in regards to breaking posted speed limits
ccrinc
As for replacing the windshield, I recommend glass replacement insurance coverage. It's cheap and will cover the $1200 replacement cost with a $50-100 deductible. Anyway, it's what I did with mine. A Transgo shift kit will make the transmission much more reliable, and incredibly responsive as well. Also have that on mine. If you want to look at the one I have for sale, go to the Vehicles for Sale on this forum. Lots of info there too.
