93 Loyale Blower not coming on, right side dash controls not lit up, newbie help

Could anyone point me in the right direction on what to look for? I have a 93 loyale and the heater / defrost blower quit working. Actually it has been intermittently coming on and off for a while but now it just does not start at all. I could live with it except for it is getting into the rainy season so I need some heat & air moving around inside the cabin for defrost purposes.

I pulled out the 4 speed fan control and took it apart and cleaned up all of the connections (wasn't sure where else to start). I figured out how the it operates and tested it with a multimeter and it is ok, the right wires connect in the right position. The fan does not come on in any of the 4 positions.

Then I tested the voltage at the fan, and it gets 13v (or whatever it is when the car is on) when the switch is at any of the on positions.

This morning I noticed that none of the lights are on for the heat/AC controls on the console (I could have sworn they were backlit before). Maybe this is indicative of the problem?

Where should I look next? I am confused why there is power at the fan but it doesn't come on.

Thanks in advance, I realize this is a super noob question. I'm not very good at electrical stuff but I am more than willing to dig into it. Just hoping someone can save me some time but pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks!!!!!!

This happens to my 93 loyale on occassion. The problem is the power connector to the blower motor. It is inaequate for the task. As a result, the wires to the plug can got hot and loosen. Usually I just wiggle the connector on mine until it comes back on. There is a panel underneath the glove box area that you can remove to see the blower motor. Turn it on and then wiggle the conenctor. Examine the connector plug where the wire goes in.

I pulled out the blower this morning and took it apart. There was a lot of dirt and grime inside so I thoroughly cleaned it with electronic parts cleaner and reassembled. All of the connectors seem to be ok on it, at least as far as my debugging skills are concerned. I really feel like the blower motor is ok. The connections all appear to be solid.

After I put the blower motor back together, I put my multimeter onto the connectors (before installing it back into the car). When I rotated the spindle by hand, it would generate electricity. So I really feel like the blower might be ok (an electric motor in reverse is essentially a generator, right?)

Is there any way I could test the blower by hooking it up directly to some power, so I could rule it out? Here is where my electronic skillz fall short. What could I safely use for a power source? My instincts are that hooking it straight up to a car battery would be a bad idea.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Yep - jumper it directly to the battery. It's only 12v - it's not going to kill you. Either it will spin or it won't. In which case it's bad :)

But - if you have 12v at the connector - do you have ground on the body side of the connector?

Many circuits are "ground controlled". In other words there is a constant voltage supply, and the switch's or relay's only turn on/off the ground.... may or may not be the case here.

Mine does this at times, too. Mine has a problem with the blower relay, that comes on when the car is running. When it gets hot, it opens up. It is hiding way up inside the dashboard on the left side of the steering wheel, with 2 other little round relays, in a fancy carrier that holds them.

The relays are identical. Try swapping one of the others in its place, to see if that fixes it. Don't leave it like that, as the other relays control the headlights.

Just pulling mine out of the holder helped a lot, as it stays cooler now. But I really should find one at the wrecker.

Good luck.

Rob.
