Spent Saturday and Sunday in the snow.

Pics are from Saturday, with a buddy off subaruoutback.org. About 6-8 inches in most places, nice, fresh snow.

Overnight saturday was about another 8-10 inches new and was able to find a road that hadnt been trailblazed yet:banana:

Plowed snow in 2nd at bumper level for awhile, started bogging down 1st didnt help, so i aired down to 20, and walked through the rest of it:eek:

Yeah, Im pretty sure it was the road that starts at Still Creek. My map calls it 2613??

I never come in that way though, there is a 4 way somewhere along that road that takes you to

East to Trillium Lake

West to Camp Creek and 32 Road

North to Veda Lake, and Devil's Lookout Tower Trailheads

South to Still Creek(I believe)

I always take 32 Rd. past Rhododendron and rally the gravel roads up to the intersection coming from the West.

We went North past Veda Lake TH and Wolf Camp Butte to Kinzel Lake near the Devil's Lookout TH.

the gates are still open into the forest? or did you find a road in with no gate?

Ive noticed that the entrance to Trillium and Still Creek both have "Road Closed" gates. EDIT: But they are not closed yet.

But I havent seen any going in the way i always do. It will be interesting to get back there after the gates are closed and we have our own little snow wheeling area:banana:

I'm thinking of going up there this coming sunday. i'm going to try and go up Rd. 2612 which i think is Still Creek Road that runs behind Rhododendron up Still Creek Canyon.

But I havent seen any going in the way i always do. It will be interesting to get back there after the gates are closed and we have our own little snow wheeling area

So, the way you go in that doesn't have any gates? Is that road 32, if so i don't see it on any of my maps, where does it start?

tried today(sunday the 11/15) and the gate on 2612 going up still creek canyon from just above rhododendron was closed and of course the road across from snow bunny lodge going into trillium lake is closed.

looks like they closed all the snow gates now.

can someone please explain to me why they close the gates in the winter? Are snowmobiles just supposed to have all the fun in winter, and we are told to "f off".I dunno I don't get it.

some of these places are remote enough that people don't normally go to in the winter and they gate them off so you don't go up there get stuck and die from exposure and these people are usually the type of people that have no business being out in the wilds especailly during the winter. they are usually in a vehicle that shouldn't be in 1-2 feet of snow or more and are not prepared or even knows what that means.

but other places are for snowmobiles while others are for snowshoers and cross counrty skiers.

so depending on the area, places are gated and closed off for various reasons during the winter while others don't even have gates and there just as remote. but i think that the areas that don't get use and are gated in the winter is just that thats one lest place they have to worry about someone going up into and getting in trouble.

but this is just my opion and 1 1/2 cent worth.

This 2612 you speak of, is that 32 Road just past Camp Creek CG?

Ive never noticed a gate through there.

Looks like i went up there just at the right time then, before they closed the gate.

i think rd. 32 might go over to 2612. 2612 is the still creek road that goes up the canyon that still creek runs down. you can get on just before rhododendrun but its suppose to be block about a quarter mile in so we croosed over to it on a road that goes over to it just above where the camp creek campground is. i didn't notice but that may be road 32 i think there marked that way on hwy 26, its not shown on the FS map as that but i just looked and that road from hwy26 to 2612 is marked 2632 so thats probably right. but a couple of miles up 2612 from where 2632 meets it theres a gate and it is now locked.

The perfect amount of snow to play in.

Looks like you got lucky and hit the right weekend for it. :)

Seems like there is only one or two where the snow is just right.

As for the gates.

Those gates especially get closed due to the sheer amount of "tourists" (I call anyone who lives closer to town than Sandy a "tourist" these days, not including those that know what they are doing and are prepared of course)

that are up in that area all winter.

Cuts down on the amount of rescues they have to do up there.

Heck a couple years ago Gregg and I had help the Forest Service Law Enforcement get his rig out of there. (he locked the gate once we all got out.)

Some of those roads start out at the ski areas, but quickly turn into BFE. And it's all downhill, just because you drove down it does not mean you are getting back up and out.

Yeah I've always had the rule when exploring (which happens alot solo) to always be wary of trails and such that head downhill if they are new to me.

I've walked over a mile down one before and still ended up just deciding to pass it up as it seemed to have no good outlet.
