disassembling 97 legacy and have questions

Recommended Posts

1--there are 2 trap doors on the fuel tank...pass side is oval dr side round--whats the diff?

2--under the radio there is some kind of air bag control module--is it worth much of anything? It has funky torx type bolts with a center pin--are wrenches readily available for this--what are they called?

3--How to take off steering wheel? I see two of those funky head bolts recessed in both sides of the steering wheel casing...?

4---BTW---could an air bag go iff without a battery in the car???

5--I would like to save the ign switch---how the heck does that come off??

thanks guys!

answers to 1 and 4 :

1 - the fuel pump is on the passenger side and it needs a larger access hole.

4 - look here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showpost.php?p=808585&postcount=7

i have posted this a couple of different times. this one is real simple and to the point, but maybe not the most complete or the most recent. i feel like i posted one just last/this month.

no, the air bag won't go off without a battery. i'm an idiot - i've replaced air bags and module without even disconnecting the battery - WOO HOO!!! Bring it on!!

yes - security torx bits. the size it posted here, do a search, i've seen two different sizes for these. avaiable at Sears, cheaper if you just order online the one size you want. get a high quality, they easily shear.

but in general that control module isn't worth much. $50 and that's if you can find a buyer, which is rare to find so it's just luck of the draw on timing.

steering wheels are easy, but i dont' remember specifics - screws in the sides to get the center portion out then crank the big nut off i believe.

The ignition lock or the switch assembly?

The assembly is held in by bolts that have break away heads. You just drill out what is lift of those bolts (guess the size of the bolt shaft, dont go by the "head size" and then it will copme right out.

Say

is this car being scraped?

Does it have the cross bars on the luggage rack/

Just askin :)

Dang i just wanted the cross bar screws.

FSM says to use a drift and a hammer "hit the torn bolt head to loosen and remove the ignition switch"

Ah we love brute force.

Hit it with a drift???

I'm trying to imagine how that will loosen the bolt...?

So you never had a stripped bolt that you had to use a drift or a chisle to remove it?

You just hit it like an impact gun. hitting it to it turns in the direction you wish for it to loosen.

Done that quite a few times. Usually it's snowing at midnight when I have to do tedious crap like that.

The steering wheel, take out the two screws on either side, disconnect the plug for the airbag module, it's a funny clip that has to be worked a certain way. Then loosen the bolt or nut in the middle of the wheel, turn it out about 1/4" but don't take it off completely. Then give the wheel a few good tugs and it will pop loose. You leave the bolt there so that when the wheel pops off you don't hit yourself in the face with it.
